lafayette defeated friday march 6 — at 4 p m bas ket ball practice in gym saturday march 7 — at 8 p m gym meet with rutgers in gym sunday march 8 — at 9.15 a m bible classes in christmas hall at 6.15 p m y m c a meet ing tuesday march 10 — at 4 p m basket ball practice in gym wednesday march 11 — at 2 p m basket ball practice in gym saturday march 14 — y m c a business meeting gym meet on saturday evening the first gymnasium meet of the season will be held with haverford in the gym nasium the men on the team have been working faithfully and there should be a large crowd on hand to see the opening meet of the season college notes important business transacted the forum met tuesday evening in the forum rooms saucon hall mr goodwin 03 former president of the forum has been compelled to leave college it therefore became necessary to accept the resignation which he had tendered to the society some time ago van sickle 03 the vice president will fill the position during the remain der of the term a vote of thanks was extended to mr good win for the services which he has rendered to the society under his administration the society has made great advancement weir 05 secretary of the in weir 05 secretary of the intercollegiate oratorical union ciety relative to this organization maccauley 04 will represent le high university in this contest this year with morgan 04 as alternate the mustard and cheese club was given the privilege of using the forum rooms for rehearsals the question of selecting speakers for the franklin and marshall vs lehigh debate was discussed the trials for this purpose were held some time ago but the results were not quite satisfactory the selec tion was finally referred to prof blake mr emery and van sickle 03 college elections meeting of the candidates the first meeting of the track can didates was held wednesday after noon at the gym twenty-four can didates were present this is a good showing but there is room for more the list of candidates is not complete and is therefore not pub lished in this issue the object of the meeting was to get an idea of the material strict training will be gin next week dr davis gave the men a short talk on the proper way te keep ir good training the plans for the work to be done during the balance of this month were outlined the long distance men will play la crosse until the track season opens all the others wil take special gym work at 4 o'clock on mondays and thursdays and long walks on the other days of the week as soon as the frost is out of the ground a cin der path will be constructed south of the gym for the sprint men to prac tice on where they will not get mixed up with the lacrosse men later it is the intention to recon struct the track on the athletic field removing the sharp turns and also making it a quarter-mile track it is still too early to make any prophecy as to the kind of team lehigh will have this spring to re present her in the track and field sports the first meet will not take place until over a month after eas ter so there is plenty of time to de velop a great deal of good material there are only two or three men of last year's squad who are not back this year ; as the season comes later than usual it will give the men more time to train resolutions basket ball season ends in a victory lehigh 20 lafayette 9 was the result of the basket ball game on wednesday evening in the gym nasium the team could not have closed their season under better cir cumstances they played a fast game and outclassed the lafayette team the gymnasium was filled to the doors by the crowd which was the largest seen in the gymnasium for some time on account of the rush around the ticket office the playing could not begin until after half past eight from the first it was evident that both teams intended doing their ut most to win the playing during the first half was the fastest seen in the gymnasium during the pres ent basket ball season the ball changed hands continually but le high easily had the advantage in passing and team work after about 2 minutes of fast playing lattig threw the first goal the game had gone on only a few minutes when pfahler and powell scored in quick succession ■a num ber of attempts for foul goals had been given to lafayette but none had been successful and the score stood 6 to o until toward the close of the half when parson the lafay ette center threw a basket from the middle of the floor it was their only score during the half powell and a farabaugh each scored and then they carried the ball between them the length of the floor for a basket by powell time was called soon afterwards with the score 12 to 2 in favor of lehigh both teams seemed exhausted from the first half which had been played remarkably fast richter of lafayette was the first to score in the second half powell and farabaugh followed for lehigh a few minutes later " andy " was thrown while in possession of the ball but he got up and made an attempt for a goal in the midst of the lafayette team it missed but he caught the ball and threw the basket the last score of lehigh was on a beautiful throw by pfahler from the middle of the field parson of la fayette secured the last basket of the game a recess was taken which umpire haldeman declared was too long and lehigh was pen alized a few minutes remained continued on second page on saturday morning last the general college elections were held to fill the positions of athletic re presentative at large and assistant managers of the lacrosse track and gymnasium teams the re sults as announced monday evening are athletic representative at large tunstall 03 assistant man ager of lacrosse team heritage 04 of track team edwards 04 and of gymnasium team macfar lane 04 mr stidman entertains last thursday evening mr stid man entertained his junior french section at his rooms on fountain hill during the evening mr mac cauley recited the horse trade from david harum with the host as toastmaster many stirring sentiments were expressed in behalf of the teams of the coming season after refreshments the party broke up for the evening whereas god in his almighty providence has seen fit to take from our midst our fellow member edwin d merkel and whereas in his death we lose a good member and a true friend therefore be it resolved that we the members of the delmonico club extend our deepest sympathy to the members of the bereaved family in this time of great sorrow and be it further resolved that copies of these re solutions be sent to his bereaved family spread upon the minutes of the club and published in the brown and white s s seyfert president l g macauley h p reno c w lotz committee for the first time in ten years yale sent a team of sprinters to com pete against harvard in a relay race one of the features of the event was the two-mile a a u championship in which there were fifteen entries alexander grant of pennsylvania schutt of cornell franchot of yale and bowen of pennsylvania were down as starters ten men started bowen led the bunch until they had gone fourteen laps then schutt of cornell took first place with grant in second place and carr of the xavier a a third in the 22 lap grant took the lead and ran away from the others on the last lap he sprinted and r e williams finished in second place with schutt a good third the time was 9 minutes 55 4-5 seconds yale defeated cornell in basket ball by a score of 32 to 5 cornell defeated the syracuse y m c a fencers saturday evening winning seven of the nine bouts the remaining two being drawn the cornell fencers showed a super ior knowledge in the use of the foils at all stages of the contest the new gymnasium at prince ton on which work was started last spring will be so it is claimed the largest building of the kind in the world the gymnasium proper will be 100x166 feet in the clear without column or post of any kind columbia has established a course of automobile engineering which will begin next april with an enroll ment of thirty students no 38 the brown and white vol x j_tfil«jnllvjrjrl uimivukoii v south bethlehem pa thursday march 5 1903 track team forum meeting calendar
