the brown and white lehigh university vol x south bethlehem pa thursday march 19 1903 no 42 base ball practice candidates showing improve ment preparations . for opening the base ball season progress rapidly every afternoon the squad is out on the athletic field doing every thing possible to get into good shape by the time of the new york game which is less than two weeks off coach maul and cap tain eisenhart are working hard to develop the men and a marked improvement can be seen in their work even from day to day • as the days keep getting warmer the fel lows feel more like playing and by this time the effect of two or three weeks practice is beginning to show itself on the average about twenty to twenty-five candidates have been corning out to practice each day a general fielding and batting prac tice lasting about an hour is held and then two teams are chosen and a game of four or five innings is played this allows every man a chance to improve his batting and fielding besides getting them used to each other's style of playing next wednesday there will be a practice game with the bethlehem preps this game was to have been played on saturday of this week but as the diamond is being fixed now and will not be in shape until next week the game was postponed of course the varsity has not been picked yet and it is unlikely that it will be decided upon within a month as to who wall make up the first team the men have not had practice enough for it to be known definitely who can fill the various positions best it is still too early to make any rash prophecies in regard to the prospects for this season but pres ent indications are pointing very strongly toward a successful one the men are showing marked im provement in all departments of the game and it is not at all un reasonable to expect that before long coach maul will have a team of which lehigh can boast . special talk the young men's christian as sociation is glad to be able to an nounce another strong speaker mr d h ferrell a recent prince ton graduate will give a talk es pecially prepared for college men next sunday evening at the usual time no one can afford to miss hearing mr ferrell e.e society holds an interesting meeting the regular meeting of the elec trical engineering society was held in the physical laboratory on thursday evening march 19th the attendance was fair about thirty being present the meeting was devoted to the discussion of the subject of electric lighting on trains special attention being given to several papers on that topic which were read at a recent meeting of the american institute of electri cal engineers wolcott 03 be gan the program by reading the address of president scott deliv ered at the meeting of the insti tute when this subject ■was dis cussed diefenderfer 03 then read a paper by arthur j farns worth entitled an axle light sys tem of train lighting in connec tion with this he also read parts of a paper by w l bliss on an elec tric car lighting system in these two papers there were given reas ons why axle systems of electric train lighting theoretically are bet ter able to meet the requirements of that problem than any other sys tem ; a description of an axle light ing system and the explanation of its operations and advantages was given marks 03 then read selections from the general discussion follow ing the reading of these papers at the institute the methods adopted by the different railroads the prob lems that came up in connection with the work and the difficulties which had to be overcome were all brought out very forcibly following this a short talk on the subject was given by mr john h klinck who is an electrical en gineer on the lehigh valley rail road and who took his degree of m s here at l'ehigh in 1899 he spoke especially of the benefits and also disadvantages connected with the various methods of electric train lighting in use at the present time comparing the bliss consoli dated and gould systems the society adopted a resolution expressing its unanimous approval of the proposed establishment of a student membership in the ameri can institute of electrical engi neers the subject of a pin for the society also received attention after adjournment the fine spread which had been prepared was enjoyed with its accompani ment of funny stories base ball schedule revised and complete schedule the completed base ball schedule is as follows : april i new york university at south bethlehem april 4 ursinus at south beth lehem april io william and mary col lege at williamsburg va april ii richmond college at richmond va april 13 richmond college at richmond va april 14 columbia university at washington d c april 15 university of maryland at baltimore april 18 pennsylvania at phila delphia april 25 columbia at south bethlehem may 2 lafayette at easton may 9 manhattan college at xew york may 16 western university of pennsylvania at pittsburg may 23 lafayette at south beth lehem may 30 dickinson at south bethlehem june 6 university of pennsyl vania at south bethlehem june 13 lafayette at easton june 16 ursinus at south beth lehem after graduation what ? that is the question which is worrying many a college senior these days if you are going in to business or technical work you ought to register with hapgoods 256 — 257 broadway new york this concern is a great clearing house for ability in every line and during the next few months it will place several hundred young col lege men in positions where ad vancement will be both rapid and sure if you wish to begin work early in the summer or fall you ought to register at once and thus avail yourself of some of the many good opportunities for 1903 graduates which are daily presenting them selves write hapgoods to-day for plan and booklet syracuse is considering seriously adopting the graduate system of coaching the students of the university of virginia will appear in charlie's aunt during easter week calendar saturday march 21 — at 2 p m practice base ball game on lehigh field at 8 p m gymnasium meet lehigh vs haverford at 8.30 p m junior class ban quet at the brighton sunday march 22 — at 9.30 a m bible classes in christmas hall at 6.15 p m christian associa tion meeting in christmas hall monday march 23 at 4 p m base ball practice at 4 p m lacrosse practice tuesday march 24 — at 7.30 p m forum meeting in saucon hal 1 campus notes the base ball diamond is being repaired this week it may be ready for use the first of next week during this time the team will have batting and field practice as usual in the outfield candidates report in fairly good numbers but are not regular everyone should re port on the field every day if any thing is to be accomplished m m farley 05 has been oper ated upon for appendicitis at his home in trenton and is doing well at present the gym team leaves on satur day for haverford where they will contest on the same evening for points in six events the lacrosse coach has arrived from toronto 1903 class book the class book this spring will be more complete than ever be fore the individual cuts will be larger and clearer pictures of class athletic teams groups of those who participated in dramatic musical literary and athletic work will form a part of its two hundred pages personal sketches and a history of the many interesting events during the four years at lehigh together with the count of the ballots which are at present be ing filled out by each member of the class will round out the sou venir to completeness the trustees of john hopkins will soon begin the develop ment of homewood the new 160-acre site of the university a committee will make a tour of ob servation among other universities preparatory to actual discussion of the matter yale and princeton meet in a golf match on may the second
