four papers read before the society one of the most interesting meet ings of the civil engineering so ciety this term was held thursday evening in the forum rooms after the regular business came the read ing of the papers the first was by schmid 03 whose subject was concerning the improvement of the roads in connecticut he gave a short history of the movement to improve the roads in connecticut and also showed how they were improved giving both the method of construction and super vision of the work fie mentioned the several offices connected with the work giving the duties of each and presenting in a very interest ing manner the methods each used in carrying out the w r ork he said for small towns or villages the greater part of the expense for roads is borne by the state thus helping the progress of the smaller places more than the larger com munities which are more able to care for themselves of course for road improvements in all towns the state pays something but the greatest percentage is borne when the roads are built in smaller towns he then described minutely the pro cess of location and construction of both new and improved roads very few details if any being omit ted which related to slopes drain age or material of construction saucedo 03 spoke on irrigation methods he took for an ex ample an actual case w r ith which he was acquainted in mexico he showed by formulas how the amount of water necessary to irri gation for any area is calculated and then from that the dimensions of the canal which would have to be constructed there were many valuable points brought out which should prove of interest and value to some men in the course who are devoting their attention to this work yost 04 spoke on a subject of vital interest to the borough of south bethlehem concerning the construction of the proposed storm sewers the question which first came up before the engineer of the borough was whether to build storm sewers separate from ordinary house sewers or to build all in one ; but for sanitary reasons the first course will be pursued the prin cipal storm sewer will be located continued on fourth page to be held may 16 on lehigh field the annual interscholastic meet for 1903 will be held on lehigh field on saturday may 16 at 2 p m during the past week invitations and entry blanks have been sent to numerous high schools and pre paratory schools throughout the country already over twenty fav orable replies have been received and all indications point to a very large number of entries and a very successful meet . the keen compe tition in the events last year es tablished several very creditable records and from the present out look there should be many new ones added to the list in may the list of events : 100 yards dash 220 yards dash 440 yards dash half mile run one mile run one mile relay four men 120 yards hurdle 3 ft 6 in 220 yards hurdle 2 ft 6 in running broad jump running high jump putting 12-pound shot throwing 12-pound hammer pole vault a silk banner will be presented to the school scoring the greatest number of points gold silver and bronze medals will be given as first second and third prizes in each event ' . every convenience in the way of training quarters will be provided for the competing teams and every effort will be made to entertain the visitors during the stay in south bethlehem basket ball meeting the basket ball team held a meeting last wednesday afternoon and re-elected pfahler 04 as cap tain he accepted the position un der protest as he feels that he may not be able to play next year on account of his work however if he should be forced to stop playing he will still be able to help coach the team sistant manager of the team the election by the whole college will take place at some future date throp berg and mcmullen were nominated for the position of as to represent lehigh in f and m debate a meeting of the forum was held in the forum rooms saucon hall on tuesday evening the debate was a discussion of the ques tion which will be debated with the franklin and marshall debat ers the speakers who were to re present lehigh in this debate had been selected not permanently however two of these persons have found it impossible to serve and as a result the selection of men to take their places was based largely on the performance of men in this preliminary contest the question under considera tion was as follows : resolved that for the government of a free people the english cabinet system is preferable to our presidential system it was discussed on the affirmative by skillman 03 ; cur tis 03 ; gilmore 03 and on the negative by talley 04 morgan 04 and h e jordan 03 at the final debate with franklin and mar shall lehigh will have the nega tive side of the question messrs morgan and jordan have been per manently selected to represent le high in this debate the third speaker will be selected within the next few days after the debate was over there was some little discussion concern ing a revision of the forum con stitution messrs gilmore 03 ; kautz 05 and martin 05 were appointed as a committee to look after this matter the election of officers of the forum will take place on or about may 3 1903 gymnastic exhibition the annual gymnastic exhibi tion will be held on april 3 a definite programme has not yet been arranged but the evening's entertainment wall include class work by the freshmen and special apparatus work by the gymnasium team a fancy drill after which the leaders in the freshman class will execute a series of exercises on several pieces of the apparatus will be followed by club swinging and work by the gym team pyramids will conclude the exhibition the mandolin and guitar club to gether with a quartet from the glee club will make the evening the more enjoyable with several se lections charles conrad hewitt ex-'o3 recently won the 100 baird prize offered at princeton university for highest excellence in oratory the seniors in the course in elec trical engineering will make a trip to schenectady n v within the next two weeks in order to 1 spend a few days visiting the works of the general electric company which are located there these works are among the most famous of their kind in the country and employ a large number of the grad uates of lehigh prof franklin asst prof eaty and mr rege stein will accompany the students prof esty took a four-year ex perimental course at schenectady after graduating from the massa chusetts institute of technology mr regestein also spent two years at the works before becoming 1 an in structor in electrical engineering at lehigh they will be with the stu dents in the visit to the factories c o ivlailloux the electrical en gineer of new york who recently gave a course of lectures before the students is delivering a similar course before the students of har vard university he will begin a second series of lectures here next week mgr underwood of the foot ball team who is trying for a game in philadelphia with the university of pennsylvania on oct 3 has ar ranged for a game with princeton at princeton on oct 10 previous to meeting both pennsylvania and princeton minor teams will be played here under the directorship of coach newton who will return from abroad early in august and at once call out the squad to prac tice the schedule as far as com pleted gives games with cornell at ithaca nov 7 with lafayette at eastern on nov 21 and with dick inson at carlisle on nov 30 the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa saturday march 28 1903 vol x interscholastic meet speakers selected meeting of the civils calendar no 44 campus notes friday march 27 at 4p m base ball practice saturday march 28 at 2p m practice base ball game sunday march 29 — at 9.30 a m bible classes in christmas hall at 6.15 p m christian asso ciation meeting in christmas hall monday march 30 at 4p m base ball practice tuesday march 31 — at 4 p m base ball practice april b—at8 — at 12 m easter vaca tion begins april 16 — at 7.45 a m easter vacation ends
