assistant coach eastman an all around athlete pointed for fray game marks dedication of new stadium — gettysburg eleven discount cards for eleven bethlehem firms issued to student body secret practice held although most brilliant in football he made good records in other sports amounts allowed various sports determined at mon day's b of c meeting sold by members executive committee chosen holds many records football prospects at lehigh are being materially forwarded this year through the assistance of the former harvard tackle and all-around athlete assistant coach charles eastman after a successful four years of high school football he played lehigh is this year opening its football season under some what adverse conditions inas much as the game is to be play ed on a foreign field and against a formidable foe when lehigh meets the gettysburg bullets on saturday they will face a vet eran eleven that has been espe cially trained for this game as the biggest of their season it will be practically the same elev en that held the brown and white to a score of 12-0 last year on taylor field as gettys burg this year boasts of ten let ter men back incidentally this game marks the dedication of memorial field which should give gettysburg an added incen tive to fight all in all it is an unusually hard game to open the season gettysburg last week opened their season with an easy win prayer very rev d wilmot gateson • a b organ solo will o'the wisp nevin address a pioneer investigator with some present day observa tions relating to his work by samuel wesley parr m s professor of applied chemistry university of illinois conferring of degrees announcement of prizes and honors benediction organ postlude gigue corelli recessional march to the flag pole alma mater led by the university band at the close of the exercises in the chapel the faculty will lead the student body in a re cession to the flag pole where the formal exercises of the day con on page 3 col 5 con on page 4 col 3 of 40-0 against st john's mili tary academy and was able to score at will the game reveal ed the bullets to have a heavy line averaging 195 pounds and a speedy backfield stump and spangler were the outstanding backs and accounted for most of the scoring the former being exceptionally speedy gettys burg's veteran singley is cap tain of the team and is well known by the followers be celebrated on the cam pus wednesday october 7 ex ercises will be held in the chap el at 11 o'clock while the after noon will be open for class games competitions and sports undergraduates will assemble in the chapel and be seated be fore 10 45 a m candidates for degrees and members of the fa culty will assemble with acad emic costume at memorial hall at 10:30 a m and the academic procession will move from mem orial hall to the chapel prompt ly at 10:50 a m an organ re cital beginning at 10 30 will precede the exercises the pro gram for the chapel exercises is as follows organ prelude t election of the executive com mittee was probably the fore most in importance two mem bers were chosen from each of the three groups represented — the faculty the student body and the alumni by faculty for this year initial college dance tuesday the soccer season at lehigh opened last week with the first call for candidates the squad though handicapped by the lack of field room on the upper field has strenuous practice last week in preparation for the first game of the season track wrestling and lacrosse men appreciate the all around exercise due to the playing of soccer and many of them are fighting for berths on the varsity squad the majority of the candi dates about forty in number are from last year and should prove the backbone of a winning team the probable men for liberal support as the class of 1929 gave at the v confer ence con on page 4 col 4 tentative plans were drawn up and discussed at the senior cabinet meeting last night in drown hall the main idea be ing to obtain at least 1200 sub annual pre-founder's day hop to be big affair ned.wayburn like ly coach for m.&c lehigh six to syncopate steel co donates band instruments dramatic club plans biggest year since days of richard harding davis organization meeting held — numerous trips planned the annual founders day sports between the freshmen and sophomores will take place on wednesday october 7th these sports which constitute a time honored custom of lehigh are to determine whether or not the freshman will wear their regulation caps on sunday for the remainder of the year or whether they will put aside their dinks and wear their ci vilian hats the class which wins three out of five contests is declared the winner but in ca|se of a tie that event goes to thje credit of the sophomores con on page 3 col 5 the events will start at 1 30 orj the upper field first will come the one mile relay race with four men on each team following the relay race will be the tug of war with 25 men on each of the two teams there will be three tries and the best two will be declared the winner of that event the football marked leniency was shown in the punishment administered by the sophomore council to the six frosh who appeared on a large variety of charges three of them were acquitted outright light though appropriate pun ishments were given in the re maining cases con on page 3 col 4 the members of the council were well entertained with the remarks of some of the new men one man for example said during the cap rush of last thursday that the sophomores were incapable of properly handling the frosh upon ap pearing before the council he was again asked his opinion of the second-year men and to the immense amusement of the sophomores replied i refuse to repeat my opinion of the class in the presence of gentlemen doubtless he made a wise deci sion but after wearing a night gown indian head-gear and a few incidentals his opinion a recent interview with dean mcconn has dispelled all truth in the rumor which has been floating around the campus to the effect that the exemption from-final-examination rule has been declared null and void it is nothing but false as the ma jority of such rumors prove to the knowledge of the dean no official action has been taken on the important question al though severaj influential mem bers of the faculty have dis cussed the advisability of elim inating the rule however it is safe to say that this regulation con on page 3 col 1 con on page 4 col 5 the punch that is in the freshman class this year is be ing shown nowhere to better ad vantage than in football every day shows more men on the up per field at the beginning about forty men appeared but since then the number has swel led to almost a hundred so far the yearlings have been work ing only on fundamentals and calisthenics but cusick expects to s^art more intensive squad drill very soon he has com menced cutting down already and will shortly have the mak ings of the frosh team
