bethlehem pa tuesday september 29 1925 successful career of coach wendell wendell developing gridders in intricacies of the game vol xxxiii no 2 phy.ed department makes changes in gymnasium work price five cents fraternities pledge men of this year's frosh class combined musical clubs plan several local engagements as coach and player lehigh's grid mentor has at ' tamed a high standing both scrimmaging however injuries somewhat handicap team's progress in fraternity pledgees number 152 at close of rushing season * several new courses added and general scope enlarged cast concert radio station offers to broad combination of speed and weight figures about third of class his coaching successes gym schedule try-outs soon head coach percy wendell the man who is holding the reins which guide the destiny of the 1925 brown and white gridiron til the return of cannon who will probably be back at his old place as soon as he recovers from his injury in the mean time evans and martin are playing the ends in a creditable fashion other promising can didates are wynn raleigh and gould coach eastman has a fine bunch of huskies to choose for the line at tackles captain merrill yeager and crane stand out for the guards harmon wilson and diener and at cen ter cheel smith and thum every one of these men weigh at least 185 and most of them are between 190 and 200 con on page 4 col 3 there were 152 freshmen out of a class of 556 who were pledged by the various fraterni ties at the close of the period of silence last saturday afternoon following is a list of the frater nities with the n y con on page 2 col 3 with the opening of the le high football season less than a week off the student body is showing more interest at present than ever before every after noon a great number of specta tors may be found in the stands watching coach wendell and his assistants putting the can didates through their drills and usually ending each practice with a snappy scrimmage at the beginning of the prac tices the followers of lehigh were a little downhearted after hearing of cannon's seemingly ineligibility to play this year but joe came back and passed his exams which now makes his playing a reality to date there have been quite a few injuries for early season practice bill lytell vet eran tackle will be out of the game the entire season due to typhoid other members of the squad who are on the injured list are fred stephens plunging half back joe cannon speedy end bill crane big tackle and charlie prior last year's quar ter assisting head coach wendell are coaches eastman on the line watson in the backfield lewis with the ends and paz zetti also with the backfield this is the first year of the new coaches at bethlehem and a squad of about sixty-five men are fighting desperately for po sitions on the varsity the end positions seemed one of the main worries of the coaches un frosh get first taste of lehigh spirit and fight the department of physical education open their work this year with the most extensive course of training known to the university several new cour ses have been added and many of the old altered the swimming course has been enlarged and is now divid ed into three classes the ele mentary for men who cannot swim ; the intermediate for men who can swim but desire to per fect themselves and to learn new strokes the third class known as watermanship is for water games such as polo bas ketball and cage ball this group will also be instructed in fancy diving in addition to the watersports the red cross swimming course will again be given professors bartlett and gulick expect to perfect a life-saving corps of university men prof bartlett by the way is the lt commander of the chesapeake american red cross life saving corps sev ern district the department working in conjunction with the health service bureau has arranged classes in three sectiins : group 1 — men fitted for strenuous athletics such as foot ball soccer etc con on page 4 col 5 group 2 men with slight de fects who can be brought up to group 1 group 3 — men with weak hearts physically unfit and cripples professors reiter and bartlett have arranged a rest recreation and exercise course sudden death of lehigh freshman harriers hear coach kanaly talk keen loss in barba's absence but strong nucleus intact last year's season went over with a bang the men on the clubs co-operated with mr a i mchose the director to make the season a great success and the audiences were very appre ciative of their efforts in fact this past season was the best one the clubs have experienced since their organization this year they expect to do even more and from all indications everything seems to be working towards that goal at the close of last year's sea son a business meeting was held with a m gruhn president presiding the old constitu tion was replaced by a new one submitted by a committee com posed of w b leavens 25 chairman c r trumbore 25 and w w scott 26 and ap proved by those present at the meeting a vote of thanks and appreciation was tendered to mr a i mchose for his very efficient efforts as director and leader of the musical clubs during the five hundred freshmen debutantes made their official social blow in lehigh last fri day evening at the annual freshman reception held in drown hall under the auspices of the university y m c a nearly as many upperclassmen were present at the coming out party and approved the rules of freshman etiquette and be havior as were made known by the speakers of the evening the affair was very successful in its purpose of unifying the frosh class and was well managed by brown and white circula tion notice starting with this issue anyone who has not paid for his subscription will not re ceive a copy of the brown and white the brown and white office in drown hall will be open every day this week be tween 3:30 and 4:30 to re ceive new subscriptions cheques for the payment of subscriptions can also be sent to the brown and white room and will receive prompt at tention all changes of address and complaints for not receiving a copy of this issue should be handed into the brown and white room as soon as pos sible these can be placed in the box beside the door if there is no one in the room changes and additions to the circulation lists will be made semi-weekly so that they will go into effect imme diately freshmen wanted to draw for burr frosh if you can draw the burr will welcome you with open arms even though you receive many other kinds of welcomes during the first two weeks there are great pos sibilities for good artists as well as other kinds on the art staff the competition starts at once and is open to everybody if you are inter ested come to the burr room in drown hall tomorrow aft ernoon wednesday at four o'clock don't fosget the date and if you cannot come at that time call up w ilmurt at the theta delta chi house and he will try to explain the details of the work to you men in other classes are eli gible for the competition as well as the frosh byron dennis 18-year-old son of mr and mrs calvin l dennis of glen ridge n j who had entered with the fresh man class died thursday at 12:30 of heart disease dennis demise occured at the sun inn where he had gone to live prior to obtaining permanent head quarters for his college career his parents and several brothers and sisters survive although he had been a suf ferer with heart trouble for some years his death came as a distinct shock to those who had been acquainted with him dur ing his brief time at lehigh the lad was exceptionally pre cocious and had completed a four year high school course in one year dennis had taken seven entrance exams for ad mittance to lehigh and had passed them all with high marks he was enrolled in the electrical engineering depart ment the third of the fall sports swung into action yesterday when the candidates for the cross-country team held their first meeting in the trophy room and heard a brief talk on the prospective schedule and prac tice regulations for this sport by coach morris kanaly after the talk by the coach several of the hill and dale men went through an impromptu workout on the track of their own ac cord for the past two weeks con on page 3 col 3 real work for the prospec tive candidates began this after noon with a brisk trot over the home course commonly known as the st luke's route a few of the other routes frequently used by the harriers were point ed out by coach kanaly from now on workouts will be held practically every day in the week except saturday and will vary in length and other de tails with the try-outs only the first college meeting of year was held last thursday with a crowd so large that all could not even be admitted with in the spacious assembly room of packer hall d bell president of the ar cadia presided and after an opening song introduced our new football coach percy wen dell who received one of the greatest ovations ever accorded any speaker at lehigh coach wendell gave a few remarks on football and introduced pat pazzetti who needs no introduc tion to lehigh men for the benefit of the new men pat is one of the coaches of the foot ball team and does a great deal to put the " old lehigh fight into the team pat pleaded that there be better attendance at the varsity football practice held every afternoon there are a great many men who are signed up for football who have the ability to play who either do not come out at all or who come out irregularly if we are to produce any sort of a team at all this season the student body must give percy wendell all the support they possibly can paz etti asked the heads of the va rious living groups to see that the men under their jurisdiction come out for football and stay out several announcements fol lowed and then a short snappy talk on the students self-aid bureau by charles prior he explained the discount card which the self aid men sell to the students for the price of 2.50 the self aid is making con on page 4 col 3 in the first issue of the brown and white which appeared on friday the article saying that the brown and white would be virtually the same this year was rather contradictory be cause the six-page issue was the first of its kind since the paper was increased in size in 1923 the six-page issue will only b used however when the amount of advertising is large enough to warrant running an edition of that size this is the first year as far is known that the paper was published on the second day of college and it was made possible through the co-operation of the business and editorial staffs during the latter part of the summer in laying plans for it an article appear ed in friday's globe commend ing the issue one of the departments of the paper which has not been up to the desired standard in the past few years has been the circula tion this year starting with this issue no papers will be de livered to those who have not paid for their subscription but on the other hand every pos sible effort will be made to see that all paid subscribers receive every issue on time all those who do not receive their copy are requested to report the fact to the brown and white at the office in drown hall a note under the door or a postal will be sufficient those who have changed their address are urg ed to notify the
