entirely volun tary on the part of the incom ing students and taking this fact into consideration a sur prisingly large number of men were present at every meeting the high water mark for atten dance was reached at bosey reiter's address lessons from lehigh's leaders for this year compares first and sixtieth openings getting off to a flying start on monday september 14 the lehigh 1925 football squad numbering close to seventy men is rapidly rounding into first class condition for the opening contest next week with gettys burg on the latter's gridiron although the team participated in a practice game lastf satury day and a certain am6unt of scrimmage has been the order a large part of the time has been consumed in drilling in fundamentals and signals this was especially true of the candidates wanted to aug ment grid squad sports remarkable growth shown a few new regulations will be in effect this year most of which are minor changes with the exception of the new absence rule fis given these grades are counted in determin ing the student's term record in accordance with regulations prescribed by each department rule 53 a student may ap ply to the dean for an excuse : a in the case of consecutive absences from all classes extend ing over two full weeks twelve consecutive days of instruction or more ; and b in the case of absence from a scheduled or an nounced quiz provided that in this case the student's applica tion must be recommended by the head of the department con cerned excuses will be grant ed also for all absences incurred on account of inspection trips and'trips of athletic teams on presentation of such excuses to the department heads oppor tunity will be given to make up work which the student has missed by special quizzes spe cial reports or year's leave of ab sence two of the most import ant resignations are those of howard m fry for many years an associate professor of phy sics and fred j lewis assist ant professor of civil engin eering prof fry will go to franklin and marshall college and become an associate profes sor of electricity and physics under prof charles who left lehigh in 1922 prof lewis will go to vanderbilt university at nashville tennessee where he will become associate profes sor of civil engineering professor l b chapman and mr m s noyes were compelled to resign from their positions in the marine engineering general description of the college and its founding including a short account of the high position held by lehigh graduates throughout the world he closed by summing up the purpose of lehigh as being opening meeting of the board of control of athletics held on monday september 21 1925 probably the matter of most im port was the ratification of charles f buddy lingle as basketball coach for the 1925-26 season lingle's application had v been in for some time but this was the first opportunity that the board had to act upon it lingle captained the brown ancl white quintet for two consecu tive years and was coach of the con on page 5 col 3 con on page 2 col 2 the first opening exercise at lehigh university was held on september 1 1866 this there fore is the sixtieth anniversary of that historic occasion at these first exercises addresses were given by the founder the hon asa packer by mr wil liam h sayre jr in behalf of the trustees by the president of the university and the pro fessors and by judge wood ward of wilkes-barre der construction and the first catalog of the university indi cated the expectation that it would be occupied at an early date at the time of its opening the university staff included the president who was at the same time the professor of his tory and english literature and five other professors together with one instructor and a jani tor during the first year there were thirty-nine students in the first or freshman class and one in the second or sophomore class at that time the univer sity included two buildings — saucon hall used as a dormi tory and christmas hall for all of the academic work of the in stitution packer hall was un it is interesting to compare the university of 1866 with the university of 1925 the two buildings have been increased ten fold yet despite this change there is a sad need of addition al buildings the student body during the past summer the lehigh burr has undergone a reorganization and is hoping to put out the best burr this year that has ever been publish ed the burr will be increased to 48 pages the additions covering both the editorial and advertising departments a great deal of work was done this summer by members of the board and by the competitors toward increasing the size of the book a letter was sent to every alumnus of the univer sity asking him for a subscrip tion and the results of this cam paign were very gratifying the many alumni who responded helped considerably to increase the circulation to about 4500 which is the mark for which the board is striving many new features will year these rumors were especially active during the spring of 1924 but they were finally dispelled when bucknell arid rutgers en gaged the field for the open date on perm's schedule on the saturday before thanksgiving last year at various intervals throughout the past summer these rumors again became cur rent and they seemed so persis tent that many local residents thought it a certainty that the annual struggle would be stag ed at philadelphia this fall but the brown and white will be governed by practically the same policy for the year 1925 26 as was in effect during the past year the size of the pa per will be the same and it will again be printed by the lehigh printing company of wyan dotte street one important change will be made however whenever there is a large amount of advertising com plaints have often been heard in the past that some issues con tain too large a percentage of advertising in order to partly remedy this situation the type of the body of the paper will be condensed and the lines will be printed closer together this change is scarcely noticeable un less a comparison of the two methods is made but by the lat ter method three additional con on page 6 col 7 there is an urgent need for more reserve material on the football squad head coach wendell is constantly complain ing of lack of sufficient second third string men and is is suing an s 0 s call for more candidates to turn out there were more than a hundred men who signified their intention of going out for the team and to date there have been only a few more than sixty turn out and
