in my letter of last year men tion was made of the equipment of a geological laboratory for the mi croscopic study of rocks the gift of prof williams the efficiency of this laboratory has been increased during the past year by further gifts of apparatus by prof wil liams equal in value to his original installation among the new facili ties for geological instruction pro vided by him may be mentioned ad ditional microscopes much zoologi cal material a jones model of the earth and a reference library to which prof williams has trans ferred his own private collection of geological works a new and extended course in electro-metallurgy will be an nounced in the register to go into operation at the beginning of the next college year the great com mercial interests now dependent on the application of electricity to chemical and metallurgical prob lems justify the inauguration of this new course at the university — the first of its kind it is believed to be established in this country t m drown president the present condition of the university and its promising out look is a matter for mutual con gratulation for trustees faculty alumni and students but the in creased number of students brings with it serious problems as to ac commodations and laboratory facili ties which can only be solved by in creased expenditures for buildings and apparatus there is always a yearly deficit to be met by the trus tees for the current expenses of the university on its present basis ; for the needed expansion we must look to the alumni and other friends of the university for liberal contribu tions that our facilities may not be inadequate to the demands which a discriminating public makes upon us very sincerely yours important notice the special train to easton on saturday leaves the lehigh valley station at 1.45 p.m round trip 35 cents train will wait for football men before returning action of executive committee of alumni association the executive committee au thorizes and instructs the secre tary of the alumni association to keep a list of members seeking em ployment or desirous of making a change of position all such are requested to com municate with the secretary and furnish him with the positions they have held and the least pay they are willing to accept together with any other information that may be pertinent the secretary shall request le high men and others to keep him informed of vacancies that may come to their notice the secretary shall place in com munication with each other em ployers and men seeking employ ment the co-operation of the president of the university and of the mem bers of the faculty in this work is requested letter of secretary october 28 1901 dear sir — in accordance with the above instructions of the executive com mittee i request all members of the association to promptly inform me of vacancies and new positions which may come to their notice members looking for employment or change of position are requested to furnish me with their profes sional history all of which will be considered confidential the secretary believes this work the most important the association can undertake and asks the co operation of all lehigh men in its execution let our motto be " every lehigh man profitably em ployed members should cultivate the habit of informing the secretary of all changes in occupation and address the list of positions held by lehigh men is the strongest ad vertisement of the university the alumni proceedings will be mailed you within a fortnight a number of changes and additions have been made the grouping by occupations can be much improved when members will be more ex plicit in stating their employment in the list of members the family name has been placed first the addresses should be and shows unusual skill in choosing his openings h p barnard 04 tackle and end conies from washington d c where for three years he played on the central high school team drift under irresponsible manage ment dr pollard will place ath letics at lehigh on a sound and sane basis equally satisfactory i am sure to both faculty and students the civil engineering depart ment recently received a geodetic theodolite which was purchased by the southern lehigh club and pre sented through its president felix freyhold 85 to the university the instrument was made by kue bel of washington and has been used on several important triangu lations of the united states geo logical survey this theodolite will be of great service to all fu ture classes in geodesy and the present senior civil and mining en gineers are already using it in the field it can be employed in as tronomical determination of azi muth as well as in illustrating the best methods of geodetic triangula tion two large rooms in the base ment of packer ha-h have been ad ded to the testing laboratory by tearing out the old furnaces and constructing eight new windows the floor space is thus more than twice as large as before the pres ent equipment of the laboratory can now be arranged to better advan tage while room is afforded for the new testing machines which it is hoped may be installed during the pre sent college year the junior class in strength of materials now numbers seventy-nine men an in cif.ase of nearly fifty per cent over a.-.t year practical instruction is now being given to this class un der the direction of prof merri man in die testing of timber brick cast iron and steel last christmas the department of mechanical engineering re ceived from warren a wilbur k.-q of south bethlehem pa a gift of 5,000 for the inauguration of an engineering laboratory the eastern half of the first floor of the physical laboratory building was reserved for this purpose the announcement of this gift of mr wilbur's led to great activity among the graduates of the mechanical engineering department which brought to the university appara tus boilers engines and machinery amounting to over 15,000 in value and necessitating the erection of a new building for a steam engineer ing laboratory thi building is close to and just south of the present boiler house and constitutes a laboratory 90 feet long by 43>4 feet wide built of potsdam sandstone to match the other buildings of the campus it contains an engine room 40 by 50 feet and a boiler room 36 by 40 feet in size be sides masonry cistern and coal bins the entire building is unusually well lighted by windows and large skylights the walls are laid in cement and the roof is borne on steel trusses as far as practicable the entire construction is
