lehigh defeats read ing on saturday evening the basket ball team opened the season by defeating the strong team of the reading y m c a lehigh played remarkably well for the first game and at the end of the second half they had defeated their opponents by the score of 39 to 20 this game marked the begin ning of a new era in lehigh ath letics last year a basket ball team was organized from among the members of 1904 but this year we have a varsity team which is soon to play the teams from other colleges and so is to be as much a university affair as our other athletic teams the game itself was a decided success at times it proved very exciting but it would have been much more enjoyable had it not been for the umpire on his ac count the second half dragged along in an uninteresting manner due to the remarkably large number of fouls called every moment it seemed the umpire's whistle was blowing to call a foul the least roughness on the part of either team in his estimation was ground enough to give the other side a free throw for a goal one noticeable thing was the small number of students present of those attending there could not have been more than a dozen upper classmen at the next game which is with muhlenberg the whole col lege should be present the price of admission is to be reduced there will be another umpire and there is every prospect for a good game in the game saturday lehigh started out well and kept up the j ace until the end of the half when rhe score stood at 15 points to 8 in the second half lehigh scored 24 more points and reading 12 mak ing the final score 39 to 20 in favor of lehigh pfahler played an exceptionally fine game and miller and smartt also made their presence on the team felt the teams lined up as follows : lehigh position reading
