society was put forward a week from thursday january 16 to thursday january 23 so that m a johnson would be able to be present and address the meet ing an attractive program will be given also a choice line of refresh ments and smokes sophomores expressly invited c e society meeting held another successful the civil engineering society held another successful meeting on tuesday evening in the forum rooms of saucon hall quite a lot of business was transacted and quite an interesting and instruc tive evening was spent by all the seventy-five members who were present after the meeting was called to order and the minutes of the last meeting read the first speaker was announced mr rogers he made some remarks concerning the con struction of the new filter plant at roxborough philadelphia and called particular attention to the series of twenty-two blue-prints of the work which he had received these prints are the most complete of their kind and gave every detail of information concerning the con struction of the proposed plant they are to remain in the posses sion of the society to form a por tion of the library which has al ready reached considerable pro portions the next speaker was kelly of the junior class who gave an ex cellent talk on the ashtabula bridge showing just why it was that the bridge gave way when it did monie of the sophomore class spoke on the laying of the water pipe under the susquehanna near wilkes-barre and the subject was as wel handled as it was unique golian then spoke a few words on topographical surveying concerning borings for bed rock the business . part of the meet ing was then adjourned and mr schneider's posters were raffled off the men fortunate enough to get them being gavan 02 tun stall 03 and bentlyj 04 the next interesting event was the welsh rarebit prepared on the chafing dish for which every member of the society owes thanks to prof franklin messrs franco hall tun stall and eichner as usual after the feed the remainder of the evening was spent at cards epitome awards for literary work of all descrip tion : first award five dollars second award three dollars third award one epitome for artistic work of all descrip tion : first award ....... five dollars second award .... three dollars third award one epitome there will be no brown and white board meeting on friday all sophomores and freshmen on the board are desired to come to the next meeting on tuesday harvard pennsylvania yale and princeton have never had a fatal accident happen to any of their foot ball players a small audience gathered in the physical laboratory on last friday to listen to the regular col lege lecture and was rewarded by perhaps the most interesting ad dress which has been delivered this year mr frank moss the speaker possesses a natural repu tation by virtue of his earnest and successful work undertaken with the end in view of purifying poli tics in new york city he has been much in the public eye for the past few years especially on account of his connection with the famous lexow investigation into official mismanagement in the metropolis he held the impor tant post of prosecuting attorney for this committee and discharged his duties in such a manner as to confound the wrong-doers since that time mr moss has been very actively employed and has suc ceeded in greatly bettering the moral condition of new york mr moss chose as his subject morality and politics he cited many flagrant examples which had come under his observation of open corruption and dishonesty among public officials and showed that the unscrupulousness was not con fined merely to the acknowledged rascals but was shared by some of the honored and respected men of the city he laid bare the great wrong of exchanging money for political influence or pull and told how prevalent is this variety of public corruption in the great cities of america mr moss told also of his con nection with the breaking up of sfome of the great pool-rooms of new york and described in detail the inner workings of these mam • moth gambling houses he showed how with the complicity of the po • lice these houses may be made to bring great returns and how in spite of many obstacles he suc ceeded in forcing several of them to close their doors he narrated the story of the famous raid of the adams policy shop in which a dozen determined men broke into the house and collected evidence enough to convict the entire estab lishment continued on third page mr moss ended his brief talk with an appeal to the youth of the country which was eloquent in the a meeting of the glee club was called for sunday afternoon at the delta upsilon house but so few men showed up that a rehearsal was impossible the director of this organization stated that prospects were very good as there were many good voices in college but the men all seemed very indifferent as to forming a club the manager of the combined musical club was seen and made the following remarks : before the holidays a meeting was held and the organization of the lehigh university musical asso ciation effected so far the under graduate body has shown little in terest in either the mandolin or glee club it is a shame that a college the size of ours cannot support an organization of this kind in for mer years lehigh's musical clubs were ranked among the best in the country and there is no reason why we should not do our best to keep up this reputation it is true that there has been little inducement during the last year or two for a man trying to make any of the clubs other than that of being a member 1 mere have been no trips and outside of a concert at home there has been no attractive feature for the members of the club at the d resent time negotiations are going on with lafayette and the university of pensylvania for joint concerts the association has at present some money in the treasury and with the money that can be made if the men will only work a southern trip during the easter holidays is an assured thing there will be a meeting of the glee and mandolin clubs on wednes day evening at the delta upsilon house 431 cherokee street south bethlehem at 7 5 and it is ear nestly hoped that every man with any ability will be there nothing will be left undone to secure this easter trip and the indications now are that it can easily be made if the clubs will
