athletic committee meeting the regular meeting of the for um was held on thursday evening and was well attended the meet ing was called to order by vice president cort and the transaction of business begun the report of the committee to formulate a plan for the selection of speakers for the proposed lafayette debate was read and accepted the committee an nounced that two debates with the moravian theological seminary had been arranged one to be held on march 6 at the university the other on april 17 at the theological sem inary the criticism of the preced ing meeting was read and then the regular program was begun the subject for debate was resolved that the closed door system in new york is a failure the affirmative speakers were gilmore 03 and martin 03 and the negative was supported by goodwin 03 and r merriman 05 the judges buell 03 morgan 04 and seipt 05 gave their decision in favor of the affirmative golian 02 gave an in - teresting resume of foreign af fairs this was followed by some helpful remarks from mr emery the meeting then adjourned epitome awards the eagle hotel has witnessed many a dance in its time and the pannelled ceiling of its ball room looked down on many a pretty girl and many a gallant man since mr asa packer decided to build a uni versity on the side of old south mountain but never has such a goodly company gathered within its historic walls as that which as sembled on last friday evening to do honor to the class of 1903 and the annual junior promenade at nine in the evening the dance began and continued with unabated enthusiasm until four in the morn ing groman's orchestra presided and such marches as the yale boola and such waltzes as the mystery of love sent the blood tingling and the toes dancing until it seemed impossible ever to stop at twelve the dancers rested long enough to partake of the delicious refreshments provided by the com mittee but soon were up and at it again and not until the strains of home sweet home sounded from the palms did they pause weary and dishevelled to think how tired they were fully eig-hty couples were pres ent including a great many people from out of town the arrange ments were perfect not a detail be ing overlooked the committee re sponsible for the dance follows : d r smith chairman ; frick hertzler miller tunstall walters firpo gerhard glancy and wright among the out-of-town girls present were misses h chapman claybaugh cleaver gerhard zeh ner halfpenny sellers colton graham propfe wilhelm muss ina lundy taggart heath mum ford giberson m jeter b jeter dietrick a list of patronesses follows mesdames t m drown g b lin derman r p linderman william b myers edw m mcllvaine os borne j l stewart l c stewart son the university of michigan will meet pennsylvania in debate on march 7th the question is re solved that a system of compul sory voting should be adopted in the united states the university of chicago is to establish an annex at paris lafayette defeated lehigh scores a de cisive victory at basket ball over 500 spectators witnessed old lehigh defeat lafayette by the score of 46 to 13 in the university gymnasium last saturday night the accommodations for the crowd could not be excelled the bleachers erected on the first floor and balcony furnished ample room for the people there was not a poor seat in the whole house every thing went off well and reflected great credit on the management it was an enthusiastic crowd at times when the playing was par ticularly lively they cheered whistled and clapped for they were witnesses to the brown and white rolling the maroon and white in the dust the game was a remarkably clean one throughout only 8 fouls were called in all hard vicious playing was the order of the evening and both teams went into the game with the determination to do or die it was evident from the verybegin ning that the home team were too good for their opponents in every point of the game lafayette was completely outclassed it was not a question of which team would beat but by how large a score on the first play lehigh got a goal from a difficult position which she quickly followed up by another then by a clean throw from the center of the field lafayette scored her first goal then lehigh threw several goals in rapid succession lafayette braced up then and threw another goal lehigh began her vig orous work again anfi quickly threw several goals lehigh fouled and lafayette got a free goal time was then called score at the end of the first half : lehigh 25 ; lafayette 10 then came a discussion as to the ball that was to be used umpire haldeman insisted that the second half should be played with lafayet te's ball finally a compromise was made and the first 10 minutes were played with lafayette's ball and the second with lehigh's the second half opened with a determination on lafayette's part to close up the gap that lehigh was rapidly widening it was useless only 1 goal did they throw in the second half while lehigh threw goal after goal making the final score 46 to 13 in her favor continued on fourth page a special meeting of the athletic committee was held on thursday evening january 23d to discuss the question of next season's foot ball coach nothing definite however was decided upon hall reported that about 325 had been subscribed for among the undergraduates this insuring the 100 more from one of the members of the faculty at present the manager of the foot ball team is in communication with sev eral first-class men and in all proba bility the services of a good coach will be engaged within a very few days the subject of a base ball coach was also brought up but no definite steps were taken to engage one it was reported that in all probability carr would not return this spring for literary work of all descrip tion first award five dollars second award three dollars third award one epitome for artistic work of all descrip tion first award five dollars second award three dollars third award one epitome the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday january 27 1902 alumni banquet no 29 a very successful and largely attended dance junior promenade 300 raised for a foot ball coach at phila vol ix calendar monday jan 27 — at 7.15 p m mandolin club rehearsal at phi gamma delta house tuesday jan 28 — at 7,15 p ivl glee club rehearsal at delta u house mandolin club rehearsal at phi gamma delta house wednesday jan 29 — at 7.15 p m glee club rehearsal at delta u house mandolin club rehearsal at phi gamma delta house notice mandolin club rehearsal every night this week at the phi gamma delta house glee club rehearsal every night commencing with tuesday at the delta upsilon house rehearsals at 7.15 forum meeting a meeting of the philadelphia lehigh alumni club was held on friday evening last at which offi cials for the ensuing year were elected and a dinner partaken of at which a great deal of lehigh spirit was engendered about eighty members were present and a num ber of guests including dr drown and the following undergraduates : vocal quartet reese scheesley tracy and johnson ; mandolin cluh quartet daniel higgins morgan strauss the boys were treated royally and in return performed to the best of their ability dr drown spoke at length on the condition of the university which he declared generally prosperous and also on athletic affairs other speeches were made chiefly con cerning athletics by messrs g c leidy pierce doolittle and others trie meeting pledged itself to do all in its power to bet ter the athletic standing of le high and subscribed on the spot over 300 for the support of next year's foot ball coach between the speeches the man dolin club played selections from san toy creole belles kaya kaya and among the flowers the glee club sank a medley of popular songs and college songs and the fortune telling man was rendered by reese and aint dat a shame by tracy lehigh yells helped graduates recall college days as the meeting disbanded at a late hour
