a valuable paper by c a p tur ner c e 90 on the thermo-elec tric measurement of stress in metals appears in the january number of the proceedings of the american society of civil engineers by means of a galvanometer in an elec tric circuit he has been able to deter mine the change of temperature that occurs when a bar is stressed in a testing machine and this change is found to be proportional to the stress up to about three-fifths of the common elastic limit of the metal after which a rapid increase in tem perature results he has thus made the important discovery that there is a thermal elastic limit marking a mollecular change in structure and that this limit is much lower than the one observed in common tests it is probable that this discovery will throw much light on certain phenomena of stress which have hitherto been regarded as unex plainable mr turner's paper will be discussed at the meeting of the american society of civil engi neers in new york on march iq the lafayette was igain postponed it is not yet knov|n when the game will be play d off t c snow also prevented the cros country run scheduled for wednesday afternoon for track tean men and others i is planned to hold the junior baiquet in bethlehem saturday mjrch 15 tickets to cost 1.50 all juiiors expecting to go will please haid their names to the committee in charge frick glancy and d snith a basket ball game will be played vftth wyoming seminary in the le hgh gym on saturday night an ii formal dance will follow the jame there will be a college meeting fifter the university lecture on fri day for a few minutes all stu dents are requested to remain work on the forthcoming epit ome is now actively under way and everything possible is being done to assure the success of the book the first third of the copy is now in the hands of the publishers the chas h elliott co of philadelphia and if everything goes well th book should be on sale by the latter part of may competition for the literary and artistic prizes offered by the epit ome and noted in these columns has been brisk and the board of editors will no doubt be obliged to scratch their wise heads many times before the awards can be distributed how ever there is still much demand for work both of the brain and of the hand and any further contributions will be welcomed if submitted a + any time before the easter holidays small poems and short stories in particular are wanted especially if illustrated the board has adopted an idea in the arrangement of that part of the eoitome dealing with fraternities which it is hoped will modify the usual barrenness of this very impor tant portion of the book the em blem of each fraternity will be en graved in the upper left-hand cor ner of the page and will be followed by a short sketch of the chapter and fraternity it represents this page will take the place of the separate sheet heretofore used for the em blem alone and its effect will be to make this feature more compact and less monotonous the board invites students of the university to submit any amateur photographs dealing with subjects of interest to the college if satis factory they will be paid for and published giving when desired full credit to the artist it is to be hoped that the under graduates will do all in their power to aid the board in the execution of their various duties and without doubt the epitome when published will be a credit to the university which it represents official announcement concerning tuition and other fees m and c caste athletics — the lehigh uni versity athletic committee consists of three faculty members four alumni members and five under graduate members this commit tee subject only to the board of trustees of the university and in conference with the faculty directs the policy of the university in all athletic matters and has power to engage trainers and coaches the trustees approve of and de sire to encourage athletics at the university provided they can feel sure that they will be conducted un der conservative careful and busi ness-like management the resolutions of the board of trustees establishing the athletic committee extracts from which have just been given should be carefully read by all lehigh men graduates and undergraduates in the committee all members have the same power the same right of speech and of vote if the wishes of the alumni are not heeded it is because they are not known or be cause the alumni members do not perform their duty if the views of the undergraduates are not heard it is the fault of the undergraduate members of the committee last year's foot ball coach was engaged by the committee aftei much discussion and with the provi sion that the committee furnish an assistant coach for three weeks at the beginning of the season to help start the team in lehigh's style of play this provision the commit tee could not keep — the proper man for assistant coach was not avail able in view of the fact that no at tempt was made to force the action of the committee in engaging last year's coach it must be apparent tc every fair minded man that much criticism has been misdirected the situation at present calls for united action nobody's hand is tied trustees faculty alumni undergraduates are helping to make it possible to engage an expert coach and it is very important that the coach engaged have the confidence of the four bodies as far as possible if any one has a suggestion let him communicate it to some member of the committee hold your mem bers of the committee responsible to represent your interests and when a coach has been selected give him your united support the lehigh diploma — morr than twelve hundred men hold the diploma of lehigh university this body of men follows every detail cf university activity with jealous in terest and pride the instruction must be kept up to date the class men coming to lehigh and the class of men graduated from lehigh is care fully watched and the undergradu ate life and activity studied not and actitvity are studied not quantity but quality has always been our watchword there has not been much spoon-feeding
