friday may 2 at 11 p m col lege lecture by leo s rowe of the university of pennsylvania base ball cornell vs lehigh saturday may 3 — lacrosse at swarthmore pa swarthmore vs lehigh scrub 12 kutztown 4 the only victory by a lehigh team on saturday belongs to the scrub base ball team which de feated the kutztown nine by the above decisive score the scrub was in good form and by means of much indiscriminate talking and some well-directed objections to de cisions left their opponents far in the shade at times there was some really good ball playing the out field of the scrub sustained its usual reputation and it required a well placed hit to touch ground out side of the diamond mccleary and zearfass divided pitching honors two runs being made off of each the game was called at the end of the seventh on account of supper the score by innings : scrub 6 1 2 1 1 o i—l 21 — 12 kutztown 101 2 o o oo — ■4 sophomore banquet about forty sophomores assem bled at the wyandotte on last sat urday evening for their annual ban quet the affair was an unquali fied success throughout and re flected credit upon the committee — folsom smith hartzog johnston wilbur and johnson the doors to the dining room were opened at half past nine after the banquet toasts were responded to as follows : our class .. shetland burrows athletics chorge bailey the ladies j ac k jackson the bethlehem police hutch hutchinson die stadt andrew mack college songs and yells were in dulged in after which the crowd dispersed w a cornelius promo tion w a cornelius 89 who has been the general superintendent of the national rolling mill monon gahela furnaces and steel works and the boston iron and steel works of the national tube com pany in mckeesport has been pro moted by the board of directors to be assistant general manager of these plants or next in authority to , general manager g g crawford on saturday afternoon the le high lacrosse team lost the first championship game of the tri angular league to johns hop kins by the score of 9 to 1 the visitors easily outclassed the home players in strong and consistent team work playing together almost perfectly on the other hand le high was notably deficient in this respect and during the first half es pecially they seemed to be unable to work together at all and the play ing was almost entirely individual in the second half however they took a brace and succeeeded in mak ing a goal and holding down their opponents to the same number hopkins is by far the best team that lehigh has met this year and con sidering the fact that so many of the home players are new men their showing against this strong team is by no means discreditable as usual the work of lattig was ex cellent and his skillful running and dodging drew hearty applause from the bleachers olpp also played a fine game at the beginning of the game neither side was able to score and the playing was sharp and fast sev eral attempts at goals were made by both teams but were all unsuccess ful finally after fifteen minutes of play hopkins by hard work suc ceeded in making a goal three more followed in rapid succession then for the next eight minutes no more scoring was done but the visi tors again started and made four more points before the end of the half score johns hopkins 8 lehigh o the second half was much more interesting and closely-contested by the hardest kind of playing hop kins made one goal and lehigh also tallied one these were all the points made during the half and the game ended with the score nine to one in favor of johns hopkins the our relay team again met defeat but for once in a very long time the press reporters lacked a chance to make a foot note to the effect that lehigh also ran the defeat was disappoint ing to the university since our pros pects seemed particularly bright but the old story of hard luck and a very unfortunate accident made it impossible for the team to win lehigh had fifth position on the track williams 05 ran first and gained four yards on the field fin ishing first man in his lap brown ell 05 the second man to run for lehigh held his own finishing only a few feet behind the first man in this lap who was a n y u run ner with prospects looking pretty bright for the brown and white team an unfortunate thing hap pened funk of n y u who finished first in the second lap ran in front of hayes 05 as he hayes was starting out and col lided with him before lehigh's runner could untangle himself the field had a start of several yards that could not be cut down frick 03 our fourth man in the race ran very prettily and although he could not cut down the big lead that swarthmore rutgers and n y u now had on him finished well up in the bunch taking fourth place with c c n y a good sixty yards in the rear the time made in this race was 3 mm 32 sec — 11 seconds faster than the time made in the same race last year and the fastest time of any of the mile relay races this year with the exception of the one mile intercollegiate championship which was run by harvard in 3 mm 21 sec as a whole the meet was a de cidedly successful one and several new records have been added to the list the most remarkable perform ance was done by gray of perm who threw his lanky form over the bar at the height of 11 ft 8 in breaking the intercollegiate record by 31/2 inches and coming within three inches of the world's record duffy georgetown's sprinter twice equalled the world's record of 9 4-5 sees in the 100 yds dash perm continued on fourth page base ball lehigh 7 bucknell 23 lehigh traveled up to lewisburg saturday to meet with one of the worst defeats of the season the team played in a listless manner all through the game and when capt lilley was injured in the sixth in ning things wen from bad to worse bucknell soon caught on to fara baugh's curves and pounded him all over the field bucknell went to bat grenninger the first man up hit to landefeld and was thrown out at first mccormick flied out to left field milligan went out at first le high went to bat but failed to reach first score lehigh o ; bucknell o v weidensabel made a safe hit smith followed him and teufel lined out a three-bagger bringing in two runs cockill flied out to davidson stanton took his base and veil hit to left bringing in one more run grenninger flied out to de schweinitz lilley struck out de schweinitz failed to reach first and farabaugh was thrown out score bucknell 2 lehigh o mccormick got to first on eisen hart's error milligan hit safely but mccormick was put out at second weidensabel flied out to davidson and milligan was put out at second davidson went up and struck out and landefeld made a safe hit to left reese struck out eisenhart went out at second score buck nell 2 lehigh o smith made first on landefeld's error and teufel followed cockell flied out to de schweinitz stanton got to first veil made first on brush's error and smith got home stanton went out at second teufel scored and grenninger was put out at second butler was hit by pitched balll and lilley hit safely de schwei nitz made a two bagger and butler and lilley scored brush struck out farabaugh
