manhattan 5 lehigh 1 the base ball game with man hattan last wednesday resulted in a score of 5 to 1 in favor of man hattan the game was not an in teresting one the playing of both teams being neither very good or very bad lehigh's principal defi ciency lay in her poor batting only five hits being made during the game the hitting of the manhat tan team was not very heavy but they seemed to have the faculty of bunching their hits when they were needed most the visitors started in the first inning by putting a man on base and scoring two runs by a home run after this the outcome of the game was never very much in doubt lehigh's only run was scored in the fourth inning when de schweinitz pounded out a two bagger and came home on farabaugh's single stolen bases reese brush double play eisenhart reese sny der struck out by farabaugh 3 by callahan 1 two base hits de schweinitz rock home run huff bases on balls off farabaugh 1 off calahan 1 it is the duty of an educational institution to provide sound mental and physical training for the youth committed to its charge this train ing is generally uneventful now and then a student will show unus ual talent in some particular study or sport and his college will make extraordinary efforts to develop that talent for exhibition and for competition with other colleges the standing of an educational institu tion is determined by the average training of the student body not by the rank attained by the excep tional individual the value of the special development of an un usual talent is its tendency to raise the general average lehigh university now makes ade quate provision for general athletic training the gymnasium and athletic field have never had better attention but what about the athletic teams which represent the university in competition with other colleges ? here the cry is lack of support de ficit defeat what is the source of the trouble may it not be that we attempt too much ? perhaps the schedule calls for too many games perhaps we meet too many colleges above our class perhaps we try to support too many sports this year the athletic season has extended practically through the entire year men tire of seeing athletic contests week after week and few can afford either the time or the money a part of the col lege year should be devoted to the scientific literary and social organi zations now would it not be well to have one fall short and one spring sport and concentrate the athletic inter ests of the whole college to make these two sports a success the alumni are now contributing lib erally to the support of athletic teams and the alumni have a right to express an opinion on the best plan of conducting athletic sports with an expert foot ball coach and an expert base ball coach the alumni have a right to expect that the university will regain its proper place in intercollegiate athletic con tests phi beta kappa oration important notice the first day of sale of the 1903 epitome has been unavoidably de layed but the book will mostcertain ly be on sale by monday june 9 in a well-contested and interest ing meet the lehigh track team won from lafayette on saturday by the decisive score of 68 to 40 the victory clearly showed that al though the team was defeated in its previous contests it has some good material and is easily superior to lafayette's team the men deserve great credit for their fine work as they were under a disadvantage on lafayette's track which is covered with heavy cinders which have never been rolled and on which it is almost impossible to make good time especially for those who have been accustomed to running on a hard track despite this disadvan tage lehigh . secured first place in four of the seven track events le high also showed up well in the field events winning the high and broad jumps the pole vault and tying the shot put farabaugh also won second place in the ham mer throw the most important featues of the meet were the breaking of the lehigh pole vault and broad jump records by morgan and pentz re spectively the pole vault was won by sammis at eight feet and seven inches but in contesting third place which was a tie between morgan and ronk of lafayette morgan cleared ten feet and one inch which is exactly one inch better than the lehigh record which has stood for twelve years in the broad jump pentz made twenty-one feet and six inches breaking the former record by about eleven inches pentz did fine all-around work se curing a total of twelve points for lehigh the result of the meet was not in much doubt after the first events for it was !
