sophomore raid preceding night of dinner hardly affects attendance lafayette by horriers and bunching hits squeezes a 6-4 win from lehigh tossers injuries run riot on both teams college expresses esteem for bosey garnet plucky well planned frosh also attend before the largest gathering that has witnessed a ball game in the taylor stadium this year the lafayette nine defeated le high by the score of 6-4 last saturday afternoon before the game began dame fortune was scouting around to see what kind of trouble she could make berry lafayette's star catcher was kept from the game with a broken finger and this seemed to cast a great gloom over the maroon nine then the jinx stepped in and as the lehigh outfielders were practicing honey lewin sus tained a broken finger and con sequently could not start in the contest not satisfied with rob bing the brown and white of lewin's services dame fortune strolled around again in the sixth and this time pointed her finger at pete dußois who had replaced captain adams on the slab dußois was running down grube between 2nd and 3rd when he slipped and wren ched his knee after some de lay he tried to take his place again but his injured leg would not hold his weight con on page 4 col 1 . captain adams was coach baldwin's choice for the hurling and although the maroon bat ters did not garner as many hits as the lehigh men their hits were more bunched in the second on the first ball pitched to kirkleski and storcher the rival players lifted them far over the walk for home runs in the third lafayette scored three more runs on a single a sacrifice a walk a wild pitch and two more clean hits one of the features of the game came in the eighth inning when bob adams was once again back on the mound kirkleski and storcher the two home run the last week-end marked the first successful lehigh effort to have a dad's day with the ob ject of showing the respective dads where their money and sons went and as far as possi ble meeting the faculty which taught and guided these sons attempts at this sort of thing in the past have been inadequately supported and the results un satisfactory but the results of this effort could not be other than gratifying to the sponsors of the idea the dads began arriving on saturday morning and were shown over the campus and its buildings by their sons meet ing such of the professors and instructors as their respective guides desired luncheon at commons followed , and the mess-hall was packed with stu dents dads and a fair sprink ling of the mothers and sisters dr c r richards president of the university spoke upon the purposes and history of the institution and of the place which it holds in the engineer ing world dean c mcconn then spoke of the work and place of the dean's office in the college life together with the goal which it is to be hoped that this office will reach in the fu ture mr a e buchanan dis ■coursed at some length upon the accomplishments of some of the alumni in the industrial fields mr f trafford secretary of the college v gave a short talk upon the spirit of lehigh and of the efforts of the y m c a to promote as far as pos sible that spirit professor bosey reiter spoke in his usual stirring style upon the place of athletics in life after college and of the influence which properly directed ath con on page 2 col 4 sword & crescent transacts business faculty production delights audience two b.&w delegates attend conference of college papers lehigh racqueteers streak is jolted by middie netmen of sigma phi honorary body dined as guests intercollegiate newspaper as sociation holds meeting at ursinus home courtmen triumph in two out of three for eign matches beneficial discussions gruellng trip the freshman class mobiliz ed to the full war strength of three hundred and sixty march ed triumphantly from the al lentown y m c a to the ho tel traylor on last friday eve ning and entered their banquet hall without having encounter ed the silghtest opposition the class had been mobilizing at the y m c a for twelve hours and by evening all but ten of its members were safely in that building the frosh expecting a raid at any moment were somewhat surprised at the lack of resistance and this fact add ed to their enthusiasm in no small measure the success of the affair may best be summed up in okey's statement that the banquet was the largest of its kind in the an nals of lehigh and further more it was the largest and most enthusiastic banquet of lehigh men ever held the banquet room of the traylor was more than filled to capa city and enthusiasm for the oc casion never wavered for a mo ment the arrangments for the occasion were excellently taken care of by the banquet commit tee and class officers under the able supervision of esmond avery president of the class and homer heller chairman of the banquet committee con on page 2 col 3 following a raid by the soph omores on the night preceding the banquet the majority of the class were held captives for several hours but by morning most had succeeded in gaining their safety and were gathering the lehigh lacrosse team triumphed over swarthmore last saturday by the score of seven to one it is unfortunate that the game could not have been played at home since the visitors here would have been treated to as pretty an exhibi tion of lacrosse as has been wit nessed for some time determined to break the jinx which had followed them in the last two games the brown and white twelve played as if in spired it was a spirited team that took the field for lehigh when the referee's whistle started hostilities the game was less than five minutes old when maury smith dented the net for the first counter with the ice broken ' lehigh commenced to roll up points and the first half ended with the brown and white leading 5-0 the defense and attack was working with machine-like pre cision on the defense jim my law art green and cy morgan made an impen etrable bulwark the success of the attack was due to the wonderful midfield work of walt smith bill fullard shell groner and hugh robinson con on page 4 col 3 the second half was even more thrilling than the first the wonderful fighting spirit of swarthmore is worthy of commendation the losers nev er lost heart keeping up their splendid fighting to the very end their efforts were not en tirely in vain since kane the swarthmore star prevented a white-wash by scoring a goal at an affair attended by sophomores freshmen and the alleritown police force a week of anxiety and spasmodic upris ing was brought to a climax with the sophomore banquet at the hotel allen on thursday may 7 despite the activities evidenced by an exceptionally well organized freshman class just 230 of an enrollment of 250 were at the banquet in ample time for the food and program in addition to this attendance were ten that strayed in the banquet hall in time for the en tertainment and speeches but too tardy for the wejl ordered repast that was prepared the incidents that were pre paratory to the actual banquet were of a nature not equalled for the past several years the wednesday evening preceding the date was devoted to a night oi riotous class wrangles tie-ups and scraps common to ordinary class banquets except for the wrecking of taylor hall the interior of the structure after the free-for-all that ensued therein resembled a portion of devasted france except for the fact that the walls remained in tact although a trifle awry other wednesday night activi ties featured roaming groups of freshmen who paid their res pects to every living group on or off the campus in quest of the sophomores individual mem con on page 3 col 1 tau beta pi closes semester activities lehigh trackmen subdued by rutgers ursinus to be next lehigh opponent ensuing year also elect officers to govern for brown and white is purely outclassed by scarlet outfit gisriel high scorer this clash will bring togeth er two were forced to acknowledge the superiority of the naval academy courtmen at the middies courts up to saturday the lehigh team had won three consecutive matches two being on their southern trip one against west point george washington being the other victim the latter was played at the columbia country club wash ington the senators will be seen in action at bethlehem this friday when they play a return match with the homesters lehigh was returned winner in each of the singles several of the matches were hard fought but coach carouther's proteges always managed to score the de ciding act at the crucial mo ment koegler disposed of the middle atlantic states in the tournament held at washington saturday of the three sets of doubles lehigh captured two and lost a heartbreaking third one in which liversidge and doty were defeated by abrams and dug gan 9-7 10-8 con on page 2 col 4 feeling the effects of the trip and being pitted against a great combination of players lehigh's winning streak was snapped at annapolis on saturday after noon the players were enter tained by the naval authorities in the morning as well as after the conclusion of the games on the evening of monday may the fourth the sword and crescent were the guests of the representative of that society in the sigma phi house at a well appointed banquet following the dinner a regular meeting was held in which the athletic situation of lehigh was discus sed as has been the custom of that society each fraternity hav ing a member in the senior so ciety shall entertain that group at a dinner the next banquet is to be held at the phi sigma kappa house on the night of may the eighteenth the sword and crescent are endeavoring to select their men for next year as soon as possi ble many of the clubs who have not as yet made their elections are delaying their work some what it is highly important that the society should have a record of the college honors o all juniors so that each man shall receive due consideration the membership is limited to fifteen men and it is considered as the highest honor in college to have been elected to that body the date for tap day has not as yet been set and as the lacrosse team is to be away all of may it is very likely that it will take place at a college meeting in the near future at present the sword and crescent has an intense inter est in the athletic situation freshman notice there will be a meeting of the freshman class follow ing chapel on wednesday for the purpose of nominating officers for the following year it is highly important that the entire class be in at tendance the eleventh annual confer ence of the intercollegiate newspaper association of the middle atlantic states was held this past week-end at ursinus college at collegeville pa this association consists of some twenty college newspapers throughout the middle atlantic states and its purpose is to in crease co-operation between the various members thereby enab ling each one to profit by the suggestions and examples of others the brown and white sent two delegates one from the editorial staff and one from the business staff these men gathered some valuable suggestions from the conferenc es for their respective depart ments the conference opened with registration and informal dis cussions on friday afternoon which were held principally for the purpose of enabling the del egates to become acquainted with one another a very en joyable banquet was tendered the delegates in the evening and four timely and interesting speeches were given president omwake of ursinus extended a cordial welcome to the visitors on the part of the hosts he also described some very inter esting incidents of his life which had to do with writing and journalism the next speaker was mr james melvin lee pro fessor of journalism at n y u and executive secretary of the i n a he gave more or less of a chatty talk on humorous and interesting experiences ; con on page 3 col 2 tomorrow lehigh's baseball team will face the strong nine representing ursinus college the latter institution has met with one of its most successful seasons in years although suc cumbing to some of the strong er teams which they encounter ed the lehigh team has un dergone a smoothing out pro cess and many of the rough spots developed in the lafay ette game have been thoroughly ironed out so as to permit the team to function in its custo mary manner dußois is sufficiently recover ed from the accident which oc cured to him last saturday and will be available for mound du ty in case an emergency arises walker will in all probability receive the hurling assignment for lehigh evans ursinus hard hitting pitcher will un doubtedly do the pitching for the visitors brown and white business competition the competition for the business staff of the brown and white will begin with a meeting wednesday after noon may 13 at 4 p m brown and white room drown hall this competi tion is open to any man in the freshman class the brown and white cinder path artists lost their last home meet of the season on saturday to the well-balanced aggrega tion from rutgers by the score of 89 to 37 the meet was run under almost ideal conditions and a large crowd was present at the start but the majority left to witness the baseball game the best the lehigh ath letes could do was to win two firsts and a tie for first in the high jump one of the firsts was in the low hurdles and the other in the discus four dual meet records were broken but no college mark was bettered the four events in whicli there were new marks for the dual meet were the discus the pole vault the broad jump and the century all of these with the exception of the discus were l made by visiting performers the new discus mark was 128 con
