continued on second page the rev w s ranesford of new york city preached the bac calaureate sermon which was ex ceptionally strong and which was delivered in a way that carried the lesson taught into the heart of every listener bishop talbot and dr steward son officiated with dr ranesford the music was rendered by the chapel choir under the direction of mr wolle dr ranesford took as his text ii peter 1:5 add to your faith courage and drew from it the ne cessity for virile courage together with faith in the ordinary affairs of the world and especially the need of both courage and faith in dealing with the many problems and difficul ties that beset the faith of the young the thirty-fourth annual com mencement exercises this morn ing crowded the university chapel again as it has been crowded at all the exercises of the week the friends of the gradu ates were repaid by a very attrac tive program following several musical num bers orations w r ere given by w f roberts who chose strikes in the anthracite coal region as his subject after another musical number orations were given by w s landis science and national su premacy m j luch functions of a university and h l fryer government ownership of rail roads trust men love and faith in men and love and faith in god must go hand lr hand ever there can be no real progress where this mutual trust does not control things and so i say to you this morning be brave to trust men look for faith in men and you will find it look for courage in men look for hon esty and patriotism in men and you find and inspire it let us be brave then let us pray to be brave brave for our great land brave for our splendid heri tage of institutions brave for our race's sake let us pray to be brave against odds brave whether the battle seems to go ill or well victory is the general's business — to carry ourselves like men is oifrs o pray then to be brave look no 60 c 2 o nve ikal e3 ktce mm<ehst t ktu ime ber the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa wednesday june 18 1902 vol ix around the world and you will see there are plenty to be wise plenty to be prudent tactful cautious ; let us pray to be valiant for his truth upon the earth and may god who loves a brave heart help us to re member that at the last and only the master shall praise us and only the master shall blame and no man shall work for money and no man shall work for fame ; but each for the joy of working each in his separate star shall draw the thing as he sees it for the god of things as they are " the alumni address next in or der was delivered by a parker smith lehigh 84 and an ll b of georgetown mr smith said in part under the heading a sug gested addition to the curriculum would it be a matter of super erogation if i should suggest that perhaps man is more important than metallurgy that while motors may accomplish much human passion and prejudice are engines of vaster power and of a far higher working efficiency ? would you smile not too indul gently if i should ask why a chair university week university sunday the opening day of commence ment week saw the chapel filled to overflowing with the well-wishers j of the graduating class whose members sat in their familiar seats j for the last time the faces of many old lehigh j men were to be seen in the throng ! and the mothers sisters and shall we say cousins of the seniors ad ded grace to the lively scene college graduate in his struggle for success he then went on to show the close correlation between faith and courage and the necessity of each for the other faith will vi talize and appropriate new forms courage fit itself to new conditions at the end he addressed the sen ior class pointing out their respon sibility as american citizens and as christians and urging them to trust in faith and courage for success and happiness he said in part : what we need to-day is a courage that springs from trust in god and trust in man if you trust god you must senior class university day of applied human nature should not head the list of every faculty and yet is there not a kernel of truth beneath that husk of inquiry is there any one of us here who can not recall some engineer of his ac quaintance whose keen technical knowledge never brought him to positions of appropriate scope be cause certain unfortunate idiosyn crasies kept him and his subordi nates ever in jarring discord technical knowledge manual skill discipline of mind and a mem ory stored with the garnered wealth of libraries are each and all price less treasures let no one de cry them they and they alone form the bulwark that separates
