certainly no preparatory school in the country can boast of more talented men or more capable and efficient teachers the new students are from wide ly distributed sections the south being largely represented as are also cuba jamaica and mexico the larger portion of the students expect to enter lehigh but some have registered for cornell prince ton u of perm and various smaller colleges a very pleasing feature this year was the enrollment of frank kuntz son of howard kuntz 80 this is the first son of a graduate of lehigh preparatory to enter the school summer schools the summer schools which were inaugurated this year were very successful the attendance exceed ed all expectations and the work done and results attained make the permanent establishment of these schools a certainty the attend ance was as follows : chemistry 1 1 the various courses in mathematics 61 strength of materials 7 and german 5 making in all a total of 84 preliminary practice marked by spir ited work preliminary practice for the foot ball season of 1900 at lehigh opened on the afternoon of satur day sept 15 and has been con tinued faithfully every afternoon up to the present time for the first week the men under the direction of captain gearhart were given some light practice in punting and running but on the arrival of coach okeson on friday last more active work was at once taken up the squad at this time was composed of about twenty-five men and after some competition in running and tackling was roughly divided into a varsity and a scrub practice will continue every day this week and a strong effort will be made to get together a good team for the pennsylvania game on saturday a partial list follows of the men composing the squad and the posit ions for which they are trying : annapolis saturday nov 3 lafayette at south bethlehem saturday nov 10 haverford at haverferd saturday nov 17 homestead l a c at pittsburgh saturday nov 24 lafayette at easton thursday nov 29 swarthmore at south bethlehem elective subject for civil engi neers juniors will elect either archi tecture or crystallography seniors will elect either ventila tion and material or architecture and lithology notice to advertisers the university will offer during the coming year the usual courses in megascopic lithology and a new course in microscopic petrology above one thousand dollars has been expended in preparation for this course and it is proposed to make further expenditures as occa sion demands so that the work of the course will be abreast of the most approved methods the petro logical laboratory will be located at present in the northeast room of the third floor in packer hall and is provided with the necessary mi croscopes and apparatus for sec tions of four students a postgraduate course in inver tebrate palalontology will also be offered for which preliminary courses in zoology have been pre pared and a laboratory is now be ing arranged for practical work the geological work of the fu ture will be under the charge of assistant professor joseph barrel e m m s ph d yale who has been engaged for the last two years in preporatory work for these courses and has also been em ployed by the u s geological sur vey in montana during the last two summers in addition to the courses formerly offered for degrees there has been added a 4 year's geo logical course especially adapted to the needs of teachers or those who wish to devote themselves to the practical work of geological surveying or to the searching for and preliminary development of the economic substances of the earth's crust don't fail to take advantage of the athletic committee's new sea son ticket offer full standing in the athletic association and 20 admissions to home games all for five dollars changes in copy must be in our hands not later than friday night for monday's issue and tuesday night for thursday's issue the opening exercise of lehigh university was held on wednesday afternoon september 26th at 3.30 in the packer memorial church after a preliminary service presi dent drown addressed the students as follows : there is no occasion in the whole college year brighter and happier than this first assembling of the students in our beautiful college chapel the wrfole atmosphere is full of eagerness and earnestness for the work before us and full of hope and expectation for a success ful and profitable year and i have no pleasanter duty than to speak the hearty words of welcome on behalf of my colleagues and for my self to the students who have re turned for another year's study and especially to those who are present here for the first time there are here to-day a larger number of students than have been in attendance at lehigh university for many years our total enroll ment will not be less than 450 an increase of nearly 50 over last year and of 125 over the year previous the roll of the freshman class is not yet complete but it will not fall
