notices epitome meeting there will be meeting of the 1902 epitome board tuesday even ing november 20 at 7.15 o'clock at the kappa alpha lodge minstrel show the minstrel association will hold a rehearsal for men trying for parts in the show on tuesday even ing at 7.15 o'clock at the beta theta pi house no 402 cherokee street south bethlehem concert the newly organized orchestra of the university will give a con cert in the gymnasium on tuesday evening november 27 tickets are now on sale and can be ob tained for 25 cents each orchestra there will be a very important practice on tuesday evening this is next to the last meeting before the conceit so let every man be in his place there will be five out siders to help us meeting of the 1902 epitome board tuesday nov 20th at 7.15 p m at the kappa alpha lodge lehigh went to pittsburg to play homestead on saturday the rest may be seen from the score a few words however to tell how it happened the homestead team as is wide ly known is the best in the coun try such stars as overfield poe and pierce who have helped to win many'a big game were in the line up and not a man on the team was there who does not possess national foot ball reputation against this all-star aggregation lehigh put up a strong game farabaugh at half back particularly distinguishing himself in spite of surroundings decidedly unpropitious for running with the ball he managed to make one forty-yard run from the kick off besides two strong ten-yard plunges dornin and downey at end tackled well but were unable at times to stop the clever home stead backs the majority of scor ing done by the pittsburg team re sulted from long end runs at tempts to gain in the line rarely proved successful the collegians besides being greatly outweighed were handicapped by the absence of captain gearhart and half-back fuller from the line-up the slip pery field also favored the home stead players lehigh kicked off and home stead was downed on her 25-yard line pittsburg after gaining three first downs on guards back tried an end run and made a clean thirty yards before the runner was brought down by dow another plunge brought the ball to lehigh's 35 yard line where homestead again broke away scoring the first touch down of the game no goal score h l a c 5 ; lehigh o lehigh again kicked off and on the next play homestead punted fifty yards plunges through the line netted lehigh 15 yards but pittsburg held and lehigh was compelled to kick homestead caught the ball and forced it down the field for a touchdown goal score h l a c n lehigh o the next touchdown was made from the kick-off homestead carry ing the ball across the line with ease goal score h l a c 17 lehigh o the half closed without any event continued on third page the president and mrs drown enter tain new stud ents the annual reception of dr and mrs drown to the class of 1904 was celebrated friday night in the gymnasinm promptly at eight o'clock dr and mrs drown took their places at the entrance of the gymnasium proper the officers of the freshman class stood in line forming an aisle as by them in rapid succession passed the guests who were presented to the receiving party after this dr drown spoke words of welcome to the students and in turn thanked both the glee and mandolin clubs for their val uable assistance the president then introduced mr black who presented his first oicture | lay en titled " miss jer.y the story of the play was most interestingly told by mr black interest was greatly added to the 1 play of '-â– miss jerry by the many beautiful views the story of jerry's father's mis fortunes in life of jerry's western friend and her earlier literary carerer was well brought out dur ing the interval between the first and second acts the mandolin club played a selection entitled " my tiger lily which was vigourously applauded during the second act mr black so admirably showed the characters he represented that in deed they seemed little short of life in fact it was almost impossible for one to realize it was a picture play so well were the scenes changed and the characters came and went in the most natural manner the features of these scenes were hamilton's love for jerry and bringing of ward face to face with his dying wife during the second intermission a quartette composed of stull 03 reese 03 monie 04 and sheesley 04 sang a medley and levee song both of these were well applauded part third opened with hamilton and jerry and ended in their en gagements here refreshments were served during which the fresh men mingling one with another en joyed a general chat the reception was a charming one and we feel assured that all the new students tendered their most hearty thanks to the president and his wife among those present basket ball for some time past there has been an increasing desire among the men in the college to form a basket ball team and on friday a meeting of the candidates for the base ball and lacrosse teams was held in the gymnasium and the preliminary steps were taken tow ards getting the necessary apparatus to begin practice at once while this team is being formed primarily for the benefit that the base ball and lacrosse men will derive from the regular work during the winter it is to be essentially a representative team of the college and everyone who wishes to try for it may feel that he will have a fair chance given him to show his ability there will be considerable expense connected with the fitting up of the gymnasium with the necessary ap paratus and in wiring it off so those at the meeting decided to pay half the expense while the athletic as sociation will stand the remainder of course those men who contrib ute to this fund will have preced ence over the others in the choice of hours for playing but aside from that the floor will be free to all the plan of starting basket ball as a sort of winter training for our spring teams is a good one and ought to have the men in first class physical condition by easter when our outdoor practices begin dr drown and several members of the faculty are very much interested in the movement and we may feel sure that with their support back of it it will be a pronounced success as yet it has not been decided what style of game to adopt but in all probability the open style will be chosen as it gives more chance for effective team work while at the same time it helps rather than hinders individual work this style of game is also much better suited to our gymnasium on account of its size and affords greater interest to the spectators as they are able to follow the game with greater ease now that things have been started it is hoped that every one in college will do their best to help the men who are taking charge of the movement and with such co operation will well be able to turn out a team that will do us credit vol viii lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday november 19 1900 dr drowns reception were the faculty and their wives the officers of the different classes and a few of dr and mrs drowns intimate friends calendar no 16 the brown and white foot ball lehigh 0 ;
