at no time was the outcome of the game doubtful in weight both teams were equal but in speed and team-work lehigh was far superior swarthmore fought pluckily but was unable to prevent lehigh from gaining time and again a fara baugh and bailey skirted the ends for substantial gains ; persons bray and hall almost invariably made ground by line plunges and peepels's work in running with the ball was especially good in the first half with the exception of the first few minutes our men did not do the work of which they were capable but in the second half they simply rushed away with swarth more from beginning to end the game was neat and clean few men being injured for lehigh bailey and persons were compelled to retire being replaced by l farabaugh and hinckle ; williams took the place of battersby who was the only swarthmore man injured although all of our men did ex cellent work bailey and a fara baugh were the best ground gain ers while dow and peepels also did excellent work in this line on defensive work it was impossible to discriminate the game in every respect was a most successful end ing to the season the game in detail follows : swarthmore won the toss and chose to defend the west goal gearhart kicked off to flitcraft who ran the ball back 8 yards swarthmore tried right end and guard but lost both times and was compelled to punt dow caught the ball and made 7 yards bailey and gearhart gained several yards around the ends and persons hit the line for 4 dow by fine run the members of the greek class es at the university of minnesota are soon to present the greek play the return of odysseus ning and aided by strong interfer ence went around left end for 25 yards persons a farabaugh and bailey by successive line plunges and end runs carried the ball to swarthmore's 5-yard line where persons was sent over the line for a touchdown gearhart kicked the goal swarthmore kicked off to dow who advanced the ball 10 yards bailey went around left end for 10 yards but swarthmore was given the ball for holding swarthmore then tried the guards back forma tion and by means of it carried the ball to lehigh's 25-yard line they then attempted a goal from the field but it was blocked ; a fara baugh picked it up and made a 40 yard run before he was downed lehigh tried the double pass but the ball was fumbled and then re gained by a farabaugh gearhart tried a fake kick but was thrown for a loss and it was swarthmore's ball they immediately punted to dow who ran the ball back 10 yards lehigh was unable to gain and persons punted to flitcraft who was downed in his tracks after several plays swarthmore punted again lehigh obtained the ball but was unable to keep it swarthmore also soon lost the ball on downs this continued the re mainder of the half neither side could make any consistent gains and the ball was constantly chang ing hands the half ended with the ball in lehigh's possession on swarthmore's 30-yard line score lehigh 6 swarthmore o second half — swarthmore kicked off to bailey who made 1 5 yards a farabaugh bailey and persons by continual line plunges and end runs carried the ball rapidly down the field towards swarthmore's goal bailey then crossed the line for a touchdown the goal was missed continued on fourth page swarthmore kicked off a fara baugh ran the ball back 20 yards before he was downed swarth more however was given the ball for holding they could not gain a yard and punted to dow a farabaugh made 5 yards through half and peepels gained 10 around end a farabaugh and bailey made 20 yards more when the ball was fumbled and flitcraft gained 10 yards swarthmore gained 10 yards and punted out of bounds they then gained a few yards more and tried a drop but only made 10 the foot ball season of 1900 is closed and lehigh's record of vic tories and defeats number five and six respectively although at first sight this may seem a little dis couraging it far surpasses the rec ord of last year both in the number of victories and in the general work of the team in the games where we met defeat the outlook at the beginning of the season was dark the varsity team had been seriously weakened by the loss of the majority of its star players such as chamberlain reese lindley and van duyne and the new material furnished by the two lower classes was of doubt ful quality , at the perplexing time the management secured the services of coach okeson and by so doing took the first step in the right direction no lehigh coach has ever proved himself better fitted for the hara task of developing a team from green material than mr oke son as he himself said recently he quickly realized that it was im possible to form a champion team from raw material it was to de velop this material for future years that he bent his energies the makeup of the team on an average for the season has been as follows : six freshmen three sophomores and one each from the junior and senior classes after but a few weeks of prelimi nary training the team met the " quakers " and the " tigers " in succession on their own grounds and justified the confidence placed in it by the college in scoring on both this much was accomplished by our speedy ends gearhart and dornin who have proved them selves the best pair of ends lehigh has had in recent years in the game with bucknell on home grounds the supporters of the team were given the first opportunity of witnessing coach okeson's wisdom in placing members of the entering class in all four back field positions the cool-headed work of white head at quarter together with the fierce line-plunging of farabaugh and flanagan soon offset the heavy onslaught of their opponents and effected a decesive victory the light-weight rutgers team was no match for our heavier line and continued on third page lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday december 3 1900 resume of the foot ball season calendar the brown and white foot ball lehigh 17 swarthmoreo vol
