basket ball 1902 epitome meeting there will be a meeting of the 1902 epitome board at the phi gamma delta house on decem ber 18 at 7.15 p.m the concert given by the college orchestra on friday evening from a musical standpoint was very suc cessful under the leadership of felix golian 02 the members have been practicing faithfully and the results of their work were in every way satisfactory the individual playing evinced the ability of the members and the orchestra as a body played in perfect unison two selections were rendered by the mandolin club which responded t encores each time the piano and violin solos were executed in an able manner and the numbers were all well-chosen and thor oughly appreciated by the audience the concert was in every way a a credit to the organization and to the university and showed that there is considerable talent in col lege which only needs the proper support of the undergraduates to make the orchestra a success financially the concert was noth ing short of a failure for the at tendance was far from what it should have been there being a very small percentage of college men present which was probably due to the fact that the date was changed at a late hour and that friday night is a regular meeting night of nearly all the fraternities and societies the program of the concert was as follows : march — " doocht no 2 . orchestra violin solo — " orchestra the members of the orchestra are : first violin — smith caum olpp kruger second violin — golian piano — slifer first comet — ehlers second comet — groman trombone — buss first clarionet — billheimer flute and picolo — brown bass violin — kern third bass — milheim minstrel show at grand opera house saturday night first dance of the se ries on thursday eve the first dance in the sophomore cotillion series will be given on the thursday evening of this week at the eagle hotel for some time the members of the club have been engaged in active preparations for thursday's function and there is now promise that the anticipations of all who look forward to the jolly good times afforded by these college dances will be more than realized twenty-eight dances will be given in all twenty-four regular and four extra of these fourteen will be waltzes and the remainder two steps in many respects the selec tion of the date for this dance is a most happy one on the following friday evening the first of the local assemblies will be given in the same hall and satur day evening comes the long antici pated college minstrel show at the grand opera house these three events closely succeeding one an other afford a delightful scheme of entertainment for out of town friends and many will doubtless take advantage of it following the usual custom the club has not issued invitations to former members now in college but they are expected and relied upon to be present the following is a list of the patronesses for the dance : mrs bird mrs chandler miss gort right mrs chas m dodson the society : a g bohannon j a cunningham j n downey c dumas j e hill j c sellers j a simons p h smith all men who have any ability in the gymnastic line are requested to see manager harleman at once the season for the gymnasium team is about to open and if the team is to maintain the good record of previous years work must be commenced at once the team is generally composed of eighteen men and any man who shows any ability on the rings horizontal bar horse parallel bars etc will have a good chance to make the team all the places are open to compe tition and mr smith the gymna sium director will have full charge of the men the schedule for this year will be the best for several years and will include the regular lafayette meet and probably meets with rutgers new york univer sity mauch chunk y m c a and several other out of town te.asa&i active work will begin at once and the men should avail themselves of the opportunity for doing some work in the time inter vening before the christmas holi days the track team men are also urged to take gymnastic work and get into some shape before out of door work begins as on the gym team places are made through com petition and all positions are open the schedule for the track team will include several trips this year and efforts are being made to hold meets with lafayette bucknell rutgers haverford and n y u the team last year was very suc cessful two new lehigh records having been made at the last meeting of the athletic committee as will be seen by reference to an other column a committee was ap pointed to look into the matter of awarding the " l " to track men and this should be instrumental in arousing new interest in track athletics a meeting of men who intend trying for the gym or track teams will be held immediately after the election next friday and captains harrar and frick will outline the work to be done freshmen are especially urged to attend — — ■♦-♦-♦ the oldest college in the world is over 1000 years old the apparatus for the basket ball team has arrived and the carpen ters are now at work fitting up the gymnasium accordingly it is likely that active practice will begin this week the base ball and lacrosse men will have the precedence and will have regular hours for practice next to these the men who have contributed toward the fitting of the apparatus will be given preced ence
