both of these fires were outside the borough limits of south beth lehem but nevertheless the depart ment responds to such alarms and if there was a steamer in the depart ment it also would respond it seems as if it might be advisable to have a students company with a piece of apparatus preferably a chemical engine located on the campus for as we know from ex perience the department of this town is not to be relied on for quick work in time of an emer gency and what has once occurred may occur again as all of our buildings are not by any means fire proof would it not be a good idea to agitate such a movement as there are doubtless plenty of men in col lege who would be only too glad to lend their aid to such a scheme if only the initial movement was made of course there would be the question of expense involved but the university would doubtless lend a helping hand in that direc tion if it felt that the movement was sincere fireman editor the brown and white among the many defunct lehigh organizations there is one which was known as the chemical so ciety the cause of its downfall is unknown to me but i suppose it died a natural death like many other of our institutions the other technical branches of the university all have their own particular socie ties in a more or less perfect state of preservation of the chemical society all that remains is its name it seems strange that the men here do not feel to a greater extent the advan tages which might be derived from such an institution in the first place i think that most people will agree that there is more to be got ten from a technical education than the simple mechanical preparation of each days work granted that at the meeting of the forum the use of the room in which the forum holds its meeting's was granted as a meeting place for a chess club after the february examinations an attempt will be made to again establish a chess club at lehigh lehigh has never taken as much interest in keeping up a good chess club as she should have done there are at present a few men in college upper classmen who are interested in the proposed undertaking but they can not accomplish anything if they do not meet with the hearty co-opera tion of the two lower classes it is not impossible that series of games can be arranged with teams from other colleges the outcome of such a contest should interest the men at lehigh as much as the re sult of any game of athletics the men who can play chess should join the chess club and in time if not immediately lehigh will have a chess club which will be an honor to her the men who cannot play chees should join the chess club and learn the game and by the time they leave college they will be proficient in the game and will recognize that they did not make a mistake when they joined the club college notes bucknell beat wyoming at basket ball 24-10 last saturday night out of about four thousand stu dents at harvard there are only sixty-three men privileged to wear the " h sixteen of these are for foot ball fifteen crew ;
