regret of the death of one its most honored members miles rock of the class of 1869 at the lehigh university mr rock was personally known to a large number of the members of this club and to other former students of the college and by his zeal and live interest in the welfare of his alma mater as well as by his genial personality had endeared himself to us all as a graduate in the first class which left lehigh and the oldest member of the alumni associa tion of our still young institution he was peculiarly esteemed his career had been carefully watched with a sense of personal interest by all the student body and his many successes both in his own and distant lands were counted as among the chief inheritance of the institution the southern lehigh club de sires to express to mrs rock and her family its sincere and heartfelt sympathy in the loss which they have sustained and to convey to them the assurance that the mem ory of miles rock will ever be re vered at the lehigh university felix freyhold 87 robert l whitehead 87 alfred e jessup 92 committee the lehigh club of northeastern pennsylvania annual meeting and banquet department of history and economics a course of lectures on the southern confederacy 1861-1865 will be delivered in saucon hall at 8.30 thursdays beginning feb ruary 14th these lectures will be about ten in number and will deal with the origin 01 the southern theory of secession the politics and influence of john c calhoun the position of the southern demo crats and whigs on the question of the control of congress over the ter ritories the process of secession in the south ern states in the winter of ib6o-'6i the military resources and organiza tion of the confederacy the confederate constitution the efforts of the confederacy to se cure european support the internal affairs of the confederacy these lectures are open to all the members of the senior and junior classes and to other mem bers of the university interested in the subject a charming book about old violins violinists everywhere will hail with delight the beautifully printed book about old violins just pub lished by lyon & healy it con tains a list of solo violins offered for sale at prices ranging from 35 to 10,000 and also sketches of the great violin makers sent free upon application to lyon & healy 20-40 adams street chicago the southern lehigh club com prising the alumni resident in washington maryland and vir ginia held its twelfth annual meet ing and dinner on saturday even ing feb 2nd at barton's hotel washington there was a smaller attendance than usual owing largely to the prevalence of the grippe in this locality but unbounded enthusiasm prevailed and in this respect the dinner was the most enjoyable and successful which this flourishing association of alumni and former students has held the club again was honored by the presence of dr drown whose report on the present encouraging aspect of university affairs was roundly cheered in particular his reference to recent additions and improvements to the various laboratories brought out a lively discussion as to the comparative value of the teaching of principles only and minute instruction on practical methods the discussion at least showed the keen interest felt in college affairs by the gradu ates who have added to their edu cation some years of valuable ex perience the club was addressed by dr drown charles a weakeley 83 ralph w lee 89 robert l whitehead 87 c j o'neill 93 robert farnham jr 99 and others alfred e jess.up 92 was toastmaster the following officers were elected for the coming year : president felix freyhold 85 ; f a perley 98 ; a e phillips 9o ; j j ralmer 00 j s shultz 00 ; j a watson 84 e a keys 99 r r lukens 98 j s siebert 86 lawrence wooden 98 the annual meeting and banquet of the lehigh club of northeast ern pennsylvania will be held at the wyoming valley hotel wilkes barre friday february 15 1901 at 7.30 o'clock subscription 3.50 per plate president h h stock scran ton vice-president a e lister scranton secretary - treasurer chas straw lost creek commit tee a f brigham w h dean j f dorrance e m french j l gross r r harvey j h w hawkins j m humphrey j t jeter o m lance w a lath rop e h lawall a h lewis jas pollock g s post w l raeder h m seitzinger g e shepherd e w sturdevant g f yost death of miles rock 98 at the annual meeting of the southern lehigh club held on saturday evening feb 2nd the fol lowing minute was adopted the club has learned with deep gymnasium team practice every day from now till the lafayette meet gymnasium team practice attended annual dinner president drown attended on february 2nd the annual dinner of the southern lehigh club at washington d c he reports a large and enthusiastic gathering epitome blanks may be obtained at the supply bureau man of high scientific attainments and wide exper ience the washington d c evening star of february 2nd publishes the following obituary of miles rock c.e one of lehigh's first graduat ing class in 1869 : mr miles rock who recently died at guatemala city was a man of high scientific attainments he was a resident of this city for many years and was highly esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances he was a charter member of the cosmos club of this city and of the washington academy of sciences born in ephrata lancaster county pennsylvania in october 1840 he served creditably with the pennsyl vania volunteers during the war of the rebellion after which he was graduated at the lehigh university in 1869 and taught mathematics and mineralogy at that institution in 1870 he went to the observa tory at cordova argentine re public and remained there for three years as astronomical assistant to dr gould subsequently he was employed by the united states hydrographic office in determining the latitude and longtitude in the west indies and central america from 1879 to 1883 he was as sistant astronomer at the naval ob servatory in this city and observed the transit of venus at santiago in 1882 from 1883 up to the time of his death mr rock spent most of his time looking after his private interests in guatemala and served on the commission to determine the boundary between guatemala and mexico mr rock is sur vived by a widow and daughter who resides in this city and a son at harvard university a telegram received from consul general mcnally at guatemala in forms the department of state that civil engineer rock died from acute entero-gastritis with compli cations the interment was at government expense from national school of engineers under the direct supervision of president ca rera and minister of foreign affairs the funeral was attended by the cabinet government authorities and all prominent people mr rock's death was universally mourned and he was buried with continued on second page vol vm lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday february 11 1901 southern lehigh dinner banquet held and res olutions adopted the late miles rock calendar no 32 the brown and white notices wednesday february 13 — at 8.15 p.m concert of the lehigh and lafayette glee banjo and man dolin clubs in grand opera house thursday feb 14 — as 8.30 p m junior prom at the eagle hotel sunday february 17 — at 9.30 a m.bible study class in christmas hall at 6.15 p.m meeting of the christian association in christ mas hall
