taylor of bethlehem ; rogers of mauch chunk and brodhead of allen town press club meeting a meeting held last thursday the civil engineering society held their semi-monthly meeting in the large c e drawing room on thurs day evening instructor dufour and enzian 01 read interesting papers in con crete constructions and gavan 02 presented a valuable and able paper on failures of abutments after a spirited discussion of the above papers the election of officers for the ensuing year was held the result of which was the election of h schneider instructor sec golian 02 chairman and gavan 02 treas chairman hausman ap pointed as a committee on con stitution and by laws enzian and mcgonigle oi,sleifer and gallardo 02 this committee with the as sistance of the c e teaching staff is to report at the next meeting april 4th at which time hausman 01 and sleifer 02 will read papers all students are cordially invited to be present at these meetings k the economic society calendar tuesday march 26 at 4.30 p m base ball practice at 4.30 p.m — lacrosse practice at 4.30 p.m track team practice wednesday march 27 — at 2.00 p.m base ball practice at 4.30 p.m lacrosse practice at 4.30 p.m trade team practice at 7.15 p.m bible study class in christmas hal thursday march 28 — at 4.3 p.m base ball practice at 4.30 p.m lacrosse practice at 4.30 p.m — track team practice saturday march 30 — base ball rutgers vs lehigh at soqtli bethlehem wednesday april 3 — easter va cation begins wednesday april 10 — easter va cation ends . notices the l u press club held its first regular meeting on thursday at 1.45 p.m in the brown and white rooms the constitution was formally adopted and the regu lar order of business gone through with besides the regular mem bership mr ewing was present and offered some valuable sugges tions all notices of importance will hereafter be posted on the brown and white bulletin board for the use of club members and all scores of base-ball foot-ball and lacrosse games will be obtained from the official scorer in order to secure uniformity in outgoing reports it was decided to hold regular meetings the first friday of each month in the brown and white rooms at 1 1.30 a.m campus notes n.y.u defeats lehigh in a pretty con test * on friday evening the strong new york university gym team defeated lehigh by the score of 47 to 34 a large and enthusiastic audience witnessed the meet in the high kick symington 01 broke the record which he made two weeks ago at lafayette raising it to 9 feet 2 inches it was in this same event that erb 04 won the applause of the audience by his perseverance failing at 9 feet 1 inch the high jump and fence vault were easily won by jones of n.y.u the work off.j belcher of n y u deserves especial men tion as he won three firsts for lehigh each man did his best harrar's work on the horizontal and parallel bars and horse was the prettiest seen here for a long time the work of terry 03 and anderson 01 on the rings was especially good attendance and a business like program after some preliminaries the discussion of the topic of the evening was opened by prof stewart the general subject was the relation of government to in dustry and involved the definition of the laissez-faire policy with analyses of the meaning of socialism and individualism the economic society is now one of the most flourishing of university institu tions having a representative mem bership and a substantial treasury the money in the treasurer's mr hewett hands is to be spent in the purchase of much needed recent economic and political works mr f b evans the manager of the universiiy of pennsylvania baseball team visited the univer sity on tuesday endeavoring to close with manager crane for a third baseball game if it can be arranged lehigh and pennsylvania will play the extra game of their series the day originally scheduled by perm fora game with lafayette perm had arranged two such dates the other of which will be filled by columbia lacrosse there will be the regular gym drill and run for the lacross can didates until the field is again m condition lectures alexander macfarlane m.a d.sc ll.d will deliver six lec tures entiiled british mathematic ians of the nineteenth century in the chemical laboratory of le high university beginning april 12 1901 the life and work of the follow ing mathematicians will be pre sented in the
