on friday evening last at the gymnasium a large crowd of towns people and collegians ga h ered to see what lehigh's indoor athletes could do and were re warded by an interesting program the various features of a gym meet were gone through and a basketball game between 1904 and a picked team was played the program closed with a fancy drill by the freshman class the program was as follows : cas tellanos 03 was also on the program but could not be given in place of these an exhibition of fancy tumbling was given in which erb especially distinguished him self and a laughable elephant race was run which was won by fara baugh and hurst good work was done by harar 01 on the bars and side horse and terry 03 deserves especial credit for his all round good work on the bars and rings calendar tuesday april 16 — at 4.00 p.m in chemical laboratory lec ture by professor macfarlane subject sir william rowan hamilton 1 805-1 865 wednesday april 17 — base ball lehigh vs princeton at prince ton friday april 19 at 11.30 a.m in chemical laboratory lec ture by prof macfarlane saturday april 20 — base ball lehigh vs pennsylvania at franklin field notices lectures professor merriman will deliver the first lecture to sen ors oiii monday april 22 at 10.30 a.m the title will b patent law and practice on the following monday the lecture will be the essential elements ol a contract professor macfarlane will lecturer april 9 at 11.30 a.m in the chemical laboratory on the life aud works of george boole 181 s 1864 inter-society base ball league the following is the schedule as arranged for the first six games the games will be played on the tournament style the winners of the first set of games will then compete as per schedule to be posted later the competitors in each game were chosen by lot and the schedule must be rigidly ad hered to wednesday april 17 2 p m chi phi vs starvation wednesday april 17 4 p.m sigma nu vs delta upsilon saturday april 20 1 p m phi gamma delta vs beta theta pi saturday april 27 i p m theta delta chi vs sigma chi wednesday may 1 2 p m phi delta theta vs psi upsilon • wednesday may 1,4 p m delta tau delta vs kappa sigma any society failing to pay the assessment by thursday noon wilt be dropped from the league junior civils the civil section of tire junior class with professor merriman went on a visit of inspection to redington last thursday afternoon most of the time was spent at the quarries where stone is obtained for railroad ballast the brown and white vol viii no 47 lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday april 15 1901 gym exhibition a very interesting program given last friday evening base ball coauuuwi •■somnd pa ficiently to send to the bench three of their opponents a couple of bad throws with a lucky hit had given new york the required two runs and the score stood tied 4 to 4 now at last the lehigh rooters and players perceived that there was something doing and bent all their energies toward regaining the coveted lead but the last part of the eighth saw three lehigh batters go down with sickening promptness and when in their part of the ninth with no man out new york succeeded in placing a man on third things indeed look serious the home team however now took a brace and two of the visitors bit the dust with the first batter still keeping good connections with third the next man knocked a bouncer to reese at second and the crowd breathed a sigh of relief which quickly changed to a growl of rage as the ball slipped from his eager fingers and rolled slowly out toward centre field in the mean while the man on third had of course come home and the la.-^t man went down with the score n y u 5 lehigh 4 as the first lehigh batter stepped to the plate the men on the third base bleachers rose en masse to their feet to try that last resort of a loosing team — a series of rattling cheers and encouraging yells bachman the first up for lehigh met his fate on an easy grounder but the cheering only redoubled as the chances of winning decreased by this time the deafening noise was beginning to tell on the nerves of cavanaugh and the first three balls to taylor the next batsman went wild the next however taylor met squarely and was wait ing on second when the ball reached the diamond again a misdirected fielder's choice allowed him to reach third and placed per sons on first eiscnhart was next up and taylor came home on an infield grounder persons taking third the score was again tied and no effort was now required to keep up the cheering of the de lighted lehigh rooters lilley next came to the bat and improved his first opportunity by placing a clean single to left bringing in per sons and ending the game — le high 6 n y u 5 lehigh 6 new york university 5 fresh from the triumphs of their southern trip the base ball team went up against the men from new york university on saturday re solved to show their college what they had learned since their last home game the result however was quite the opposite of what was expected the home team put up a loose erratic game throughout and except for the strong exhibition of lehigh spirit which marked the close of the ninth inning would have lost the pitching of both taylor and cavanaugh was first-class but neither received the support he de served for lehigh lilley and persons showed up in moderately good form but the rest of the team with the exception of the outfield was decidedly off color for the visitors lane hit the ball hard aud opportunely and simmons covered all sorts of ground at third the game was called shortly after 3 p.m lehigh taking the field new york started the run-getting in short order in the first inning when the combination of a base on balls some good base-running and an error netted them one score their triumph was short-lived however for in the last part of the initial inning with a man on first and one on second persons placed a beauty over the score-board in right field and the score stood lehigh 3 n y u 1 from this point events loafed along until lehigh's part of the fourth when reese with the help of a single and two passed balls reached the third bag bachman knocked a difficult infield grounder which was thrown home but rorke dropped the ball and reese scored in the first part of the fifth how ever new york took advantage of two errors and a timely hit and the score stood lehigh 4 n y u 2 again came a period of quiet and new york saw their tradition ally lucky seventh slip by withtheir opponents still well in the lead at the beginning of the eighth how ever lehigh considered themselves safe and again began to play in a careless uninterested sort of way but before they recovered suf
