ridge " 25 — stevens at hoboken june 3 toronto at south bethlehem " 17 — alumni at south bethlehem pennsylvania was easily beaten by swarthmore yesterday in la crosse score swarthmore 8 pennsylvania 2 the young men's christian association wishes to call the atten tion of the students to plans for the coming year these plans if sup ported by the members and friends of the university will make the association what it should be — a center for all the healthy activities in the life of the university the association has received an anonymous gift of five hundred dollars for the support of a general secretary for next year this secre tary will have the corner room on the second floor of christmas ha for his office he will have genera direction and oversight of the wor of the association all branches of the associatio work are to be improved anc broadened no pains will be sparec in making the sunday evenin meetings as interesting and helpfu as possible a vigorous atterrr will be made to create a more general interest in bible study two classes have been organized and others will be formed at the convenience and desire of the men especial attention is to be paid to the social side of the associa tion's work with this end in view the university has given us the first and second floors of christmas hall the large room on the first floor will be fitted up as a reading room and social center for all col lege men the estimate for fixing up and furnishing these rooms is eight hundred dollars in raising this amount we must have your hearty support a s gilmore for the committee was elected foot ball coach for next season in connection with this work he has been appointed physical director of the univer sity mr pollard was graduated from dartmouth college in 1895 dur ing his entire college course he played left-half and quarterback on the varsity team was captain of the class foot ball team shortstop on the class base ball team and member of the track team be sides this he was assistant to dr carleton in the dartmouth college gymnasium during his junior and senior years won several medals for exhibition gymnastics and for two years held the light weight championship in boxing during 1896 he was under the instruction of dr sargent at the hemenway gymnasium harvard in the fall of 1896 he was coach and left half back of the lake view-clarendon wheelmen foot ball team chicago from 1897 to 1900 he was physi cal director foot ball and track coach at union college schenec tady n y since his graduation from college mr pollard has been studying medicine and expects to take the degiree of m d from the medical department of the univer sity of vermont next june mr pollard comes to the uni versity well prepared he has de liberately chosen physical culture as his lifework and so does not like too many coaches look upon athletics as subordinate to some other vocation as a coach he has been remarkably successful in de veloping strong teams which have defeated opposing teams from larger colleges the university is to be congratulated on securing him for its physical director and foot ball coach lehigh defeated the team from new york in a well played la crosse game wednesday afternoon by the score of 6 too both teams played good ball although lehigh was far superior to hobart in team work and accurate throwing . as a whole the game was a decided improvement over last saturday's game as the team put more life into its playing and made it a more clever exhibition one noticeable feature was the absence of the roughness displayed on previous occasions the men showed up in excellent condition and played both twenty minute halves without any apparent signs of exhaustion hageman was tried at goal in fleming's place and showed up very well walters lattig and symington deserve special notice for good playing for six minutes after the start the ball was passed around the field mostly in lehigh's territory in a mix-up before the goal lattig managed to knock the ball into the net making the first goal for the next five minutes the ball was again thrown around the field at one time brisco for hobart had a good chance for goal but missed his throw lattig threw the second goal just five minutes after his first one for the rest of the half neither side scored symington tried a long throw for goal but missed it the half ended with the score lehigh 2 hobart o the second half began with ag gressive work by lehigh walters threw the first goal of the half after five minutes of play symington followed in six more minutes with another from a clever pass by lat tig who soon made one more goal in a mix-up in seven more minutes symington made a good pass to lattig who threw lehigh's sixth and last goal final score lehigh 6
