base ball lehigh vs la fayette at easton track team since the rutger's meet the track team has been training for a meet wi.h swarthmore on satur day on monday afternoon mr pollard the new gymnasium in structor and coach was on the field and met the team in the few minutes at his disposal he gave the men quite a few valuable instruc tions and spoke very highly of the team when informed that the en tire squad was composed of under classmen he said that he felt sure in another year lehigh would have a very strong team among other plans for next year which have al ready taken shape are the inter class fall meet and a spring inter schoolastic meet the inter-class meet will certainly be held during the coming fall and will do much in promoting the development of men for the varsity to be on sale early next week in a few days the college will be able to pass judgment on what the board considers one ot the best if not . the best edition of the epitome that has ever been pub lished , the entire book fully printed has been submitted to the board for approval and has been seen by several outside persons all of whom say that it is a credit to the university and worth more than the 1.50 it is hoped every undergraduate will pay for one all the books have been shipped from the bindery and are expected to arrive at any time we may safely set the time of sale early next week on looking over the sample copy the following features will be noticed first the cover design which is neat and attractive and quite a departure from anything that has been previously used in the body of the book the orderly arrangement of the matter the gen eral appearance of the printed pages the excellence of the draw ings and photographs both as to workmanship and printing and the altogether finished appearance of the edition cannot help convincing one that the class of 1902 has done something to be proud of a new wrinkle has been introduced con sisting of letters from alumni de scribing the life at lehigh in earlier times when very little at the uni versity was the same as now ex cept jim myers these letters show a great deal of work and at tention on the part of their writers and indicate that many of them still take a greater interest in the doings of their alma mater than some present day undergraduates it is to be hoped that by the support of the college the board will be repaid for the extra time and expense they have spent in securing this epitome and also that next year's board will be en couraged by this same support to equal or surpass if possible the 1902 edition epitome class lehigh 5 state college n a fair-sized crowd gathered on lehigh field on wednesday and saw the home players go down in defeat before the hard-hitting men from state college the visiting team with the possible exception of warn at second base who seemed unfortunate in handling the ball is the best which has been seen here this season and clearly deserved to win on the other hand the le high men played in a sleepy listless fashion and allowed their oppon ents to stretch several singles into two and three base hits parsons was particularly off-color and lilley was put to his utmost to gather in some of throws from third tay lor while pounded unmercifully at times pitched on the whole a good game his control being splendid of the seventeen hits made by state at least two may be credited against de schweinitz whose slow ness in getting started proved fatal more than once for state miller pitched only a moderate game but huber and sharpe filled their posi tions to perfection and in addition hit the ball hard and accurately the feature of the game was per son's long home run in the ninth with two men on bases state started off with a jump after lehigh had been safely re tired shelby hit for three bases andscoredon miller'ssingle warn struck out and huber hit safely sharpe knocked out a three-bagger bringing in the lanky catcher and took his seat on the bench after hewitt's single landis struck out rohrbach hit for two bases and hewitt crossed the plate merkel flied out to alder score state 5 lehigh o in the second inning a two-base hit by taylor and an error by warn put two lehigh men on base but the batters following proved un equal to the emergency and no body scored state went down in order the third opened similarly with two men on base but again no runs materialized state however was more fortunate huber placed the ball over right field fence with seemingly little effort but sharpe and hewitt went down on a grounder to eisenhart and three strikes
