features planned bethlehem pa friday april 17 1925 vol xxxii no 48 lehigh ball team suffers unsuccessful trip to south baseball team goes down to defeat before tigers and mary land while the game with quantico marines called on account of rain • poor showing due partly to bad weather lehigh lacrossers succumb to syracuse senior banquet is called off international champions of last year hand 4-2 de feat to brown and white in first game first time in many years that this annual affair will not be held may be held later played on wet field trackmen leave for swarthmore meet brown and white handicap ped by limited entries but prospects good for victory rice had three hits in as many times at bat and prior made the first homer of the year while his teammates were scor ing seven runs walker made up for his showing the day before by sending coach keady's bat ters back to the bench hitless as well as runless in the official opener with the princeton tigers a win for le high could hardly have been ex pected at this early stage of the season as princeton has a smooth working combination which had already won three games before lehigh was en countered con on page 4 col 1 pete dubois was the hurling selection made by coach bald win and he came through in fine style in the opening frame racquet wielders start tomorrow new men on team tomorrow evening at eight o'clock the combined musical clubs will present their annual home concert in the south side high auditorium of great in terest is this to lehigh follow ers due to the fact that this year the organization has won its way to the top in college mu sical productions ; nothing has been spared in making this con cert one that will long be re membered and the encourage ment given to the clubs by pre vious audiences this year has given all an added incentive to do the best that they are capa ble of the entire personnel of the club is one of popular students around the campus and cer tainly will be of interest to all lehigh men who wish to see their friends in action seeing is believing now is the only chance for a man to settle in his own mind the rumors that have been current about college on the concert that is to be staged a i mchose has proved to furnish opposition on home courts college of osteopathy will nine to cross bats with quaker nine fischer with visitors blue will attempt to avenge last year's defeat by red and penn a veteran nine be the most capable director that the musical clubs have ever had in the past few years he has been gradually whipping together an organization which today ranks high in collegiate circles like all good things much time must be spent in their preparation but when the finished product is put forth it will stand the test tomorrow will find this organization in such a position little further need be said for the following excerpts from past performanc es will prove the club's popular ity away from home the solo work of john a black the diminutive freshman has won a place in the apprecia tion of all audiences his ap pearance in feminine attire in his rendition of memory lane in a high falsetto has taken every house by storm the string quintette and the hawai ian quartette are two other groups whose novelty numbers have been the result of much commendation several changes have been made in the program from that of the previous concerts this season the pieces that have previously gone over big and will undoubtedly do so this time have been popular selections by the various departments of the club of special interest being a little pep which is a medley of musical bits from down upon the swanee river to follow the swallow and rose marie and all alone two tenor solos it is of interest to note that the program offered is one com bining both classical and popu lar music so well have the numbers been executed each go ing off without a mistake and each group meeting with a simi con on page 4 col 5 tomorrow the brown and white trackmen wil open their season with the garnet runners of swarthmore at the field of the latter last year the le high team lost to swarthmore and this year the brown and white men hope to atone for this by bringing home a victory the lehigh trackmen have been aided considerably by very fav orable weather this year and some of the best early season performances in many years have been made there is one serious drawback for the lehigh runners how ever it has been determined by the board of control that on ly two men should be taken for each event and except in cases con on page 4 col 4 the lehigh university base ball team returned from its southern trip having met with two defeats in as many games the third game against the quantico marines seemed clin ched by the brown and white nine but rain in the fourth in ning ended the contest with le high leading 7-0 the poor showing of the le high team in the first two games of the trip was due to a great extent to the bad weather con ditions and to coach baldwin's illness at princeton the le high batters could not solve the curves of dignan and as a re sult only four hits were secur ed reds nevins collected two of the team's hits one being a long triple which scored amb ler but in trying to stretch the hit into a homer the lehigh catcher was thrown out at the plate the princeton batters found dv bois for eight hits and the same number of runs in the first four innings of the game but from the fifth on they were held to two hits by captain adams who replaced dußois in the box the marine game which was ended by rain in the fourth in ning seemed destined to be put away in the lehigh bat bag the following day the team minus the services of its cap tain lined up against maryland who were out to avenge last year's defeat at the hands of the brown and white nine the baltimorians rallied in the eighth and scored two runs off walker which decided the game in this encounter the lehigh batters managed to gather six hits which showed some improvement over the hit ting in the princeton game dr miller honored by acad of science third dimensional life to be discussed this sunday elected president of the state academy of science for the ensuing year lehigh was represented at the annual meeting of the penn sylvania acodemy of science by professors miller and reynolds each of whom read a paper be fore that body scientists and educators from institutions all over the state and from the va rious state bureaus and de ! partments were present over twenty papers were presented dealing with subjects ranging from double-headed turtles to variations in mass with speed the meetings were held on fri day afternoon april 10 and saturday morning in the sump tuous senate caucus room of the capitol con on page 4 col 3 friday evening at a dinner at the beach front hotel the mem bers were addressed by samuel c schmuckler on the scien the opening match of the le high tennis season will be play ed with the philadelphia col lege of osteopathy on saturday afternoon at lehigh indica tions are that it will be a keen ly contested struggle especially in view of the fine battle oste opathy put up with haverford last week although haverford won four matches to two os teopathy showed that it had a dangerous team especially with carl fischer as anchor man fischer is rated as one of the leading inter-collegiate tennis players of the country he for merly held the inter-collegiate championship and two years ago he was rated among the first ten racquet wielders last year he played in the olympics in the haverford match fis cher easily obtained his victory defeating phil johnson captain of the haverford team 6-3 6-0 johnson played the first four games to the tune of 3-1 but fischer braced up and ran out eleven straight games his powerful strokes and sure foot work gave him the victory in the doubles with haverford fis cher and allen beat johnson and lester but osteopathy lost its remaining matches in spite of the fine playing of herbst and barnes every match was bitterly contested and lehigh can look forward to the same kind of fight the lehigh players have not been announced as yet but it is quite certain that lawall koeg ler and hagenbuch will play they are all in the best of form and can be counted upon to give their opponents a stiff battle saturday a time honored lehigh tradi tion was broken when the sen ior class banquet which was to be held last wednesday evening was called off due to the lack of support of the class members contrary to the dispatch in the public ledger of that date the cause was not due to a rift ex isting between the fraternity and non-fraternity men of the class as there are no grounds at all for this unfounded rumor the real trouble evidently is due to various reasons which are not apparent on the surface of the matter it must be re membered that the class of 25 is in a way what might be called a transition class in the mid dle of their college career the adminstration and its policies took a radical change and the class has not been able to orient itself to meet the new condi tions the few men who attended the class banquet last year were keenly disappointed in the af fair on account of the stringent regulations imposed by the col lege authorities the general sentiment after the affair was a lack of enthusiasm in looking forward to one this year this feeling greatly impeded the sale of tickets this year and it was only after great difficulty that the committee was able to dis pose of sixty tickets seventy five per cent of which were bought by fraternity men this failure of the class of 25 to hold their banquet is most unfortunate indeed and was due con on page 4 col 4 ing games lehigh's whilrwind crosse wielders went down to defeat last wednesday afternoon in one of the most hotly contested games taylor field has ever witnessed syracuse northern inter-collegiate champs and in ternational champions last year were the sturdy opponents but due to field conditions were not able to put up a hard game as their reputation warrants the brown and white men were primed for the contest and thru observations on this game coach o'neil expects to be able to size up his men for succeed a slight rain prior to the game moistened the field enough so that a good foothold was im possible and the customary speed and excitement of a close contest was missing since any attempt to cut sharply or inter fere resulted in a muddy spill within a few minutes after the opening whistle was blown lehigh's opponents succeeded in landing the rubber sphere with in the net at the west end of the field resulting in a lead of one point the brown and white soon retaliated and robinson scored lehigh's first credit tie ing the score robinson wai the outstanding point man and was able to place two shots into the cage stephens was the out standing fighter of the after noon and succeeded in recover con on
