three classes hold their elections senior class an election of officers for the senior class was held wednesday at 12.30 p m in saucon hall the supporters of the various candidates seemed rather evenly divided and as a result there was election in three of the offices : se of president secretary and jasurer this will therefore essitate a second ballot which 1 be taken next wednesday at same place and hour it is desired that those seniors having the interests of the class at heart will make a strong showing next wednesday as these are the most important elections the class has yet held coutant 82 — elected honor court 2 barager 29 — elected starkey 29 — elected during the first term there will be given a course of seven lectures on modern social problems the first lecture of the course will be given on friday oct 20th at 11.30 in the large hall of the physical laboratory by dr josiah strong of new york president of the league for social service on ti e problems confronting us at the beginning of the twentieth centurj the subsequent lectures of the course will be delivered on the first and third fridays of nov ember december and january all students of the university are required to attend these lectures and to occupy their regular seats the arrangement of seats will be found on the bulletin board t m drown pres senior elections as the first ballot for the election of officers of the # senior class resulted in no election for presi dent secretary or treasurer there will be a second ballot on wednes day october 25th at 12.30 in saucon hall only about half the class voted t the last election but it is hoped that there will be a better showing on next wednes day forum meeting junior class awarded annually to the under graduates the following is a list of the prizes and scholarships offered through the kindness of friends of lehigh to the members of the various classes of the university the wilbur scholarship this scholarship was founded in 1872 by e p wilbur esq of south bethlehem and is the sum of 200 awarded annually to the student in the sophomore class having the best record the alumni scholarship fund the alumni association of the university has established a schol arship fund for the assistance of worthy students such assistance is to be given in the form of loans secured by notes properly endorsed subject to the following conditions : 1 that loans from this fund shall be made only to students in need ot such help 2 that help in this form shall not be given during the first year of any student's course : he must without this aid have gone through one year and must be prepared to start the second year free from all conditions 3 that help in this form shall not be continued to a student who shall at any time during his course sarry atiy condition over eight weeks beyond the date of the ex animation in which he failed subject only to the above con ditions the disposal of the fund shall until otherwise directed be in the hands of the president of the university the henry s haines memorial scholarship mrs henry s haines of savan nah ga established in 1889 a scholarship of the annual value of 200 which is to be devoted to the support at he lehigh univer sity throughout his scholastic career of one student in the school r mechanical engineering the fred mercur memorial fund scholarships friends of the late frederick mercur desiring to establish a memorial of their friendship and esteem and to perpetuate his memory have contributed and placed in the hands of the trustees a fund to be called the fred mercur memorial fund sufficient in amount to insure the award of s veral scholarships for free tuition in the university the eckley b coke memorial in memory of the late eckley b ooxe trustee of the universi y mrs coxe has established a fund amounting to 20,000 the interest of which is to be u-ed under the direction of the trustees of the university and subject to such continued on fourth page at the meeting of the promising program has been arranged for tuesday evening oct 24th at 7.00 o'clock in saucon hall this is the first regular meeting of the society for this year and it especially desired to have a large number of old mem bers present and also a full quota of class of 1903 every man in college is eligible to membership economics the re-examination in econo mics will take place on friday october 20th at 3.30 p m in professor stewart's lecture room in saucon hall baseball captain : harleman the election for president and honor court representatives will be held next week freshman class a meeting of the freshman class was held in saucon hall wednesday afternoon at 2.00 p m for the purpose of electing perma nant officers upon the request of dornin a chairmam was elected to preside for that meeting frick was elected chairman the elec tion resulted as follows : president : dornin vice president : frick secretary : . fuller treasurer ; auery athletic representative : hild eth a motion was made and carried that the president select a commit tee to act with him as a cap com mittee the class dues were fixed at 0.25 per m nth commencing with october the election of a histor ian was indefinitely postponed tennis owing to many inquiries which have been made of late concerning tennis at lehigb the tennis club deems it advisable to announce through the brown and white for the benefit of new men es pecially that the prospects for tennis and for the tennis club next spring are exceadingly bright after lying dormant for several years the tennis club was reorgan ized last spring the three courts on the athletic field were put into condition a backstop erected nets and accessories procured and the club affairs placed upon an active and substantial basis it is intended to ut the courts in shape at the earliest possible date next spring so that several months of playing may be had every one in college interested in the game should come out the success of the club is assured but it is desired that as large an active membership as possible be secured in order that a lively tournament for the college championship may be given the dues it may be added are more than reasonably low anyone
