the third ballot for the officers of the senior class resulted as follows : secretary lewis 16 elected white 15 treasurer groff 14 ) ross 5 no election heinz 11 ) the fourth ballot for treasurer will be held on friday immediately after the university lecture mechanical engineering society a mass meeting was held tues day at 12.30 in the physical laboratory and a large and enthusiastic crowd was present president fuller of the senior class presided and stated that the object of the meeting was to talk over and make preparations for the lafayette game on saturday robinson 00 made a short speech giving some instances of lehigh's feeling toward lafayette and pointed out how that feeling if properly applied helped win games captain chamberlain was then called upon and stated that the team expected to win and would win if the college gave them the proper support he urged all scrub men to come out this week and help make a strong practice and also asked qvery man in col lege to be on the field at four o'clock to help cheer the team along coach thompson received a rousing reception and began his remarks by saying that lie was glad that lafayette was so confi dent as that would give us a better chance to win he said lafayette was working hard and would give us a good fight but he felt confi dent if all the men had faith in the team's winning they could not possibly lose two games were lost on fumbling this year and the team must get over that habit and also learn to get the plays started on time lie said that we should try to get the princeton spirit so as to be able to get lafayette's nerve at the start he gave his thanks to okeson for the interest he showed in giving up his vacation to help the scrub and varsity men and also wanted to thank balliet for his interest and help shultz 00 announced that the brown and white would publish songs for the lafayette game and urged anyone having ability to compose a song and hand it in parsons 00 also made a short speech saying cheers and songs were most essential to the team's success on saturday but that he also wished to see more men come up on their athletic dues one class in college has the record of having two men in it who have paid up this year's dues the meeting closed with cheers for okeson and balliet with a good old lehigh yell as a climax ath rep at large the first regular meeting of the mechanical engineering society will be held in packer hall on friday nov 3 at 7 o'clock p m instructor trowbridge will present a paper upon " the supervision and management of marine boilers and engines lost — a fraternity pin the finder will favor shaeffer 01 by returning it to him the nominations for athletic representative at large are hol lingsworth and canfield ; the election will be held on wednes day from 12 to 1 o'clock in jim's room every registered member of the university is eligible to vote the economic society held its first meeting on tuesday night professor stewart presiding the business of the meeting was first transacted shultz robinson and lewis being nominated to fill the positions on the executive com mittee left vacant by pettit 99 ; and robinson enzian and bayard were appointed to draft resolutions regarding the death of gustavo rovelo a member of the society shultz was elected to the executive committee professor stewart before begin ning his address expressed his pleasure at the interest in the society as manifested by the num ber of men present and compli mented the civil engineering soci ety upon its first meeting hoping the present interest in it would con tinue ' he also called attention to the brown and white as being of great importance both to the undergraduates and to the alumni he then spoke in part as follows upon " england and the boer " the boers were originally dutchmen who had settled in cape colony and natal and who were under the direct rule of holland until a treaty was made with great britian ceding these colonies to her the rule of the english did not suit the boers and so they went to the transvaal and set up a government for themselves which afterwards was recognized by the english government a lew years later britian pro claimed suzerainty over all the territory north of her possesions in south africa including orange free state and the transvaal but as a result of the treaty of 1881 she relinquished all claims ex cept i hat of governing the trans vaal in making treaty's again in 1884 another treaty was made between the two countries in which the word suzerainty was not mentioned this was the last treaty the present trouble arises out ol the very severe naturaliza tion laws of the boers which compells a man to be a resident of ihe country fourteen years before he can have the least voice in the government but during which time he is taxed at a rate identical with all citizens '' england has no reason accord ing to the unwritten code of inter national law for undertaking the present war and only has for an excuse her dislike of another country's naturalization method she has a very difficult task before her and in proof of her fear ( f the result is the size of the army she is mobolizing which is the of left half-back regularly j n keese 00 age twenty-one years is five feet ten and one half inches in height and weighs one hundred and sixty-two pounds he played right half-back on the harnsburg high school team before entering lehigh and has filled that position for two years on the varsity a l lindley 02 is playing back on the varsity and played in several games last season he is nineteen years
