presented a paper on water tube-boilers be sides being highly instructive it was made doubly interesting by numerous blackboard illustrations the paper in substance follows : all the boilers having a place in current practice — with the ex ception of the old english type which still survives have the greater part of their heating sur face in the form of tubes of small diameter in all kinds of boilers the diameter ranges from one inch to five inches " the essential description of the older type of boiler is a large vessel containing water through which passes a number of small tubes carrying the products of combustion the three representa tive forms are cylindrical return tubular externally fired when this arrangement of fire and water is inverted the water being inside the tubes and the products of com bustion outside we have the general class of water tube boilers the one feature of their operation which differentiates them from the older type and which furnishes a basis for classifying the bewilder ing variety of such boilers is that the ciiculation of v ater and seam is positive and definite to a great or less degree when the water is in a large vessel the application ■f heat causes circulatory currents to be set in motion the water rising with the steam where the heat supply and consequent ebulition is greatest and descending in the c oler portions but these currents are entirely the result of a reaction of natural forces and where the disturbance of equilibrinm i slight so also is the circulation sluggish but in all water-tube boilers there is a constrained and definite path provided in which the water must travel and along which the forces producing the circulation must act this insures a more complete but especially a more uniformly dis tributed circulation than in the other class or at least gives the possibility of so arranging the elements of the boiler as to secure this end continued on third page " with a comparatively slow ebulition and in a simple vessel as an open kettle or a plain cylindri cal boiler we can imagine the steam to be formed in bubbles at or near the heating surface which simply float up through the water of their own buoyancy the whole body of water gradually set the minstrel association is having daily rehearsals for their performance to be given on sat urday evening december — the music which will be the best that the association has ever selected will be a prominent feat ure the general plan of the per formance will be similar to that of previous years although improve ments have been merit musical duetts string instrument solos an exhibition of fencing together with some work on the order of the usual vaudeville enter tainments the services of the lehigh university mandolin club have been secured to render their assistance towards making the performance an exhibition of varied talent this will be their first appearence this year and everyone who has attended the rehearsals of the club will agree that this is the best musical organ ization lehigh has had in several years the third part of the min strel show will consist of a short farce into which one or two special ties
