gave several very entertaining musical numbers between speeches con on page 4 col 1 the first speaker of the eve ning was c a buck vice-pres ident of the bethlehem steel corporation who extended the best wishes to mr wendell and his staff contending that lehigh was very fortunate in selecting a coach of mr wendell's type mr buck emphasized the fact as well as did most of the speak ers of the evening that joy comes to all of us when lehigh beats lafayette mr hutchin son spoke in behalf of the townspeople and extended to the new coach the welcome which the town people wished to be ex as well known having produced shows for harvard university mcgill and his pet company the hamilton ontario operatic company for work in the lat ter company he won the earl grey competition cup perhaps it might be of inter est to our readers to know that the competitors for the earl grey cup come from all parts of canada from vancouver to st johns after two weeks test in the city of ottawa the cup is awarded this competition in cludes dramatic musical and or chestral work to the credit of mr callon he won the cup in the first year of his compeition in interviewing mr callon we asked him what he thought of the mustard and cheese com pany and whom he thought would make a hit he comment con on page 4 col 3 the mustard and cheese i indeed fortunate in having the service of mr j paul callon as directing coach for the coming production of russian around coming direct from new york mr callon has just finished his work in the production of i'll say she is this is one of the most successful shows on broad way after a long run on the great white way is now tra velling mr callon is just as well known in london as he is in new york having been in the prince of wales theatre the lyric theatre and the theatre royal of drury lane in new york he has been stage director for such well known men as schubert brothers henry w savage thomas w riley and joseph m gates in collegiate circles he is just lehigh's new football coach percy wendell was formally in troduced to a host of lehigh alumni citizens of bethlehem and friends of lehigh univer sity at a banquet held last mon day evening at the hotel beth lehem the affair was sponsor ed by the lehigh home club h r walters president t the lehigh home club was the toastmaster of the evening and introduced mr wendell to the many guests which were assem bled to welcome him among the guests which were seated at mr wendell's table were coach bill wood of gettysburg col lege d leßoy reeves gradu ate manager of athletics at la fayette college william hut chinson president of the cham ber of commerce coach wil liam wood of muhlenberg and coach wallace of rutgers dur ing the dinner music was fur board of control awards letters intensive training by musical clubs tau beta pi pledg es eighteen men followed by dance home concert on 19th to be alumni secretaries will visit lehigh large delegation expected week-end of april 23-25 bit of history customary chapel exercises dispensed with in honor of occasion other important business transacted at meeting on monday freshmen also honored local body host most ever elected an informal dance intended primarily for the members of the freshman class is being planned now by the triangle society of that class this post-easter affair will be held on the evening of april eigh teenth in drown hall and prob ably will be the last open social function of the year for the freshmen it is intended that this dance will be as important to the freshmen as is the annual cot illion to the sophomores altho to eclipse the cotillion is consid ered impossible in keeping with this intention elaborate plans are being laid mr avery class president said last mon day evening at the business meeting of the triangle society that this dance was to be the crowning event — barring the frosh banquet — of the present school term and that all plans were being made with that end in view he added that all that is needed now is as much interest on the part of the class as it has shown in every pre vious undertaking two orchestras will be en gaged for the evening mr del aplaine chairman of the music committee reported to the so ciety he has received prices from a half dozen musical or ganizations including several on the campus but was not pre pared to announce which of these were to be accepted any two of these bidding would as sure an excellent dance program however in addition to the se rious thought being given the selection of good orchestras much time is being devoted to the selection of an attractive de con on page 4 col 2 inter-mural boxing latest inception the first spring football prac tice ever held at lehigh was suc cessfully brought to a close last wednesday afternoon with the completion of two weeks of hard work under the direction of coach percy wendell former williams coach between sixty and seventy men among whom there are many bright prospects for next year's team turned out daily to practice and received many benefits from the instruc tions given them by the former william's mentor the fundamentals of the game tackling unting and fall ing on the ball were taught to each and every man whether experienced or inexperienced short signal drills were held daily and running through the actual plays was part of the regular routine assisting coach wendell were coach austy tate of bethle hem high who acted as head line coach along with eastman former harvard star and all american tackle and coach fitzgerald of harvard who had charge of the backfield men coach wendell has become familiar by now with a great many of the candidates for the lehigh team and consequently possesses a pretty good idea of what each man can do much of his time has been devoted to the coaching of the men who are on last fall's freshman team and it is expected he will devel op a good deal of valuable var sity material from this group of men practice in the fall will be gin ten days before college opens and all men who are go ing out for the team should be on hand at that time harmon to head lehigh splashers expect keen competition in eight different weight classes wednesday witnessed the first inter-class lacrosse game ever held at lehigh the sen iors met the juniors in one of the most hotly contested pre season games that the upper field has known two fairly well-matched teams ran and checked and passed for thirty fast minutes the seniors had the edge in experience and slightly in speed but the jun iors exhibited great staying power they put up a very game fight but went down to defeat by a 7-0 score the work of smith wardell and groner for the seniors and of robinson and lister for the juniors was the outstanding feature of the game the seniors were just too good to be stopped that af ternoon the freshman - sophomore contest which was to have been held this week has been post poned because so many of the underclassmen are at present engaged in other athletic activi ties that they would not be able to participate hopes that tuosday afternoon will find as many underclassmen as possible on the field so that the inter class game will be a real bat tle manager williams is endeav oring to find a lacrosse game to complete the varsity schedule in place of the game with yale he hopes to have a satisfactory game arranged within the next few days plans are being made to include yale on next year's schedule so that relations with yale are as friendly as ever yale only cancelled the game this year because until a short time ago lehigh was un certain whether or not the fac ulty would allow them to play this year's schedule was pass ed by the faculty called for only eight games while yale was the ninth game special faculty action was required be fore the yale game could be closed this action did not come until after yale had arranged another game for the date changes effected in swimming body's scheme of meets taylor addresses business fraternity juniors alpha kappa psi pledges four the honorary business fra ternity of lehigh university alpha kappa psi was address ed by mr r s taylor on fri day the 27th of march at drown hall w b wardell president of the society introduced mr taylor who spoke on banking in the community the meet ing was not restricted to mem bers of this organization and some outsiders attended the in teresting talk con on page 4 col 3 the speaker told of the meth ods of running banking institu tions and their various func tions he then showed the dif ference between banks in large the awarding of letters and numerals to the varsity and freshman teams was the most important thing accomplished at the regular monthly meeting of the board of control of ath letics held on monday other matters which were acted upon were as follows : a petition for the change of the color of the sweaters was rejected it was decided that the lafayette soc cer game will be played on the morning of the football game if approved by the faculty in the future the cross country team will have a separate man ager from track in the past there was the same manager for both of these sports and it was thought that the work was ex tended over too long a time for one man assistant coaches tate and eastman were approv ed as assistants for next sea son art cusick 23 was again selected as freshman coach provided something of an in spiring mien when the men elec ted to the honorary engineering fraternity tau beta pi were pledged reverend gateson's daily five minute talk was dis pensed with in favor of the in itial try-out given to the new seating plan and the pledging the recent spring election of members was the largest num ber ever chosen at one time in the history of lehigh univer sity eighteen men in all were chosen members of the junior class who have maintained the standards set by the fraternity are elected in the spring the seniors of equal ranking are chosen in the fall after the initiation the fra ternity will tender a large ban quet in honor of its new mem bers among the probable speakers will be dr williams jr class of 75 founder of the fraternity and dr charles r richards as the founder of tau beta pi happens to be a lehigh man it will not be amiss to publish a little about the origin of the society in 1885 there was only one honorary fraternity the phi beta kappa at that time mem bership to this was open only to men pursuing the academic courses con on page 4 col 1 dr williams jr 75 then professor of mining and geol ogy at lehigh decided that the engineers should have their honorary fraternity he found ed the present tau beta pi that the combined musical clubs are now practicing diligently for the coming home concert with less than three weeks to the date of their initial appear ance in bethlehem practice is now being called three times a week by director a i mchose in supplementing the pro gram at the wendell banquet last monday the quartette made a big hit and is a fair token of the calibre of the combined or ganizations this year of interest to lehigh follow ers is the progress made by the musical clubs in the last forty years starting in 1885 the first organization under the ti tle of the combined clubs was started at that time the choir and glee clubs were combined being joined a year later by the then small mandolin club pre vious to this time the only mu sical organizations were the delta tau delta and chi phi glee quartettes the combined organizations enjoyed a successful period of about ten years when appar ently all interest was lost for the next decade a slow revival of the clubs was evinced only to again die down several re vivals of the clubs followed this but not until three years ago was the organization of today finally brought into action a reputation cannot be made in one year without a start the past two years have been the start of what is now the best musical organization that has appeared on the lehigh cam pus much credit is due to its director a i mchose manag er w b leavens and presi dent a m gruhn for the first time in the sport ing realm of lehigh university there will be an intramural boxing tournament the de mand for an event of this type became so great that it was de cided to hold a meet in order to determine the real status of the sport among the students there will be eight different classes of weights the 112-lb 117-lb 125-lb 135-lb 158-lb 175-lb and the unlimited class the bouts will be of three rounds and the rounds of two minutes duration each all those desiring to participate in the tournament should hand in their names at once to profes sor fay bartlett all entrants will be required to undergo a short period of training in or der to insure their fitness and a physical examination of each con on page 4 col 3 final plans have been com pletel for the coming joint meet ing of the association of alum ni secretaries and alumni mag azines associated which will be held in bethlehem under the au spices of the lehigh alumni as sociation from april 23 to 25 inclusive the complete pro gram is published in the form of a small pamphlet which has been sent to all the associations throughout the country the conference will open on thursday morning with re gistration and opening address es followed by a luncheon in the alumni building in the after noon there will be several pa pers read with a short discus sion following each in the eve ning there will be an informal dinner at the hotel bethlehem with some entertainment fea tures by various members of the conference the third session of the con ference which is to be held on friday morning will include the reading of more papers and discussions as on the previous day the visiting delegates will be the guests of the lehigh al umni association at a luncheon in the alumni building these sessions will be principally for the alumni magazines on fri day afternoon the session will be mainly for the alumni secre taries and will continue with the reading of more papers at the close of the friday afternoon session an opportunity will be afforded the delegates for visit ing the historic moravian build ings
