both the mandolin and guitar clubs and the glee club have re newed practices these two clubs have contemplated a trip at easter vacation to some of the large cu-k and in all probability will take two or three short trips before that time every one knows what the man dolin club is capable of doing as it showed its merit in the minstre show it holds its practices tues day and thursday evenings in christmas hall the glee club is yet to be tried by a public performance but if the minstrel show proved one thing it proved that there is an unusual amount of valuable material in college with this material le high will be able to make as good a showing as any of the larger institutions one thing is neces sary and that is that all men who wish to try for the glee club must show up every professor franklin and mr e b williamson former ly instructor in electrical engi neering at lehigh is meeting with much favorable comment and an interesting review of the work is given by dr charles p steinmetz in science for december 29 1899 from which we quote the fol lowing : " this book gives an exposition or rather an introduction into the engineering methods of investiga tion that is those methods which are used in practice to investigate the phenomena taking place in al ternating circuits and to design al ternating apparatus the contents of the book are : chapters i to iv general principles of alternating waves and measurements chap ters v to vii inductive circuits parralell and series connections chapters viii to xv alternators transformers synchronous motors transmission it gives but also by what it omits " in electrical engineering as in most branches of science two meth ods of investigation exist the differential method compounds the equations of the phenomena taking place in the time differential it is the only exact method and the method which has given broad re sults of universal importance but in the hands of anybody but a mathematical genius it is barren of results in the integral method the time differential and to a large ex tent the time as variable has alto gether disappeared the alternating wave is represented by its quadra tic means and its phase the e m f of self induction finds its expres sion in a constant ohmic reactance and even the hysteric loop has dis appeared and is represented by an angle of advance of the phase of magneto-motive force with regard to the magnetic fiux this method continued on second page beginning with the second term a number of alterations will take place in the school of technology chief among which will be the in troduction of a new course in geology and a change from five to four years in the length of the course in mining engineering the first four years of the course in mining engineering will consti tute a distinct course leading up to the degree of metallurgical engi neer and the new course leading to the degree of engineer of mines will embrace several changes to be announced later an outline of the new course in geology is here given the course is designed to meet the requirements of all who de sire a more extended and a more practical presentation of the sub ject than can be obtained in the ordinary university course the mathematics and physics and their application to analytical mechanics are the same as taught in the tech nical courses so that the graduate should be prepared to discuss problems m geological physics the surveying includes land mine and geological surveying leveling topography triangulation and the use of the solar transit and permits the graduate to survey and map with highest accuracy anything on the surface or under ground the ordinary course in geology is ex tended by excursions into the foundations of botany zoology and biology and supplemented by work in the field in the courses in surveying and physiography the ability to readily determine the character and value of the ores and minerals met with is guaran teed by extended courses in crystal lography mineralogy megascopic and microscopic rock analysis eco nomic geology and both chemical and blowpipe analysis the course in chemistry includes assaying quantitative wet analysis and the discussion of chemical problems so that mineralogical formulae can be calculated from the result of an alyses the blowpipe courses cover qualitative and quantative work economic geology is taught in a thorough manner and applied by courses in refractory materials and continued on fourth page there will be an important meeting of the 1901 epitome board saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the beta theta pi house all members of the junior sophomore and freshman classes in the school of mining engineer ing are requested to report to the president at the earliest opportu nity whether they have been elected to remain in the present five-year metallurgy mining course or to take the four-year course leading to the degree of e m so that their names can be properly
