meeting in the society rooms in sauc>>n hall president fletcher called the meeting to order at 7.15 o'clock after roll call the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved mr luten was appointed as critic of the meeting mr fletcher read a correspondence from the oratorical union which stated that the sus quehanna university desired ad mission into the union aftar considerable talk pro and con it was decided by the society that the seven colleges now represented in that union were sufficient the suggestion being made however that those colleges which have applied for admission to the union and have been refused organize an independent oratorical union and thus form a competition the committee appointed to ar range for a joint debate with lafayette reported that they had notified our rival college and had not as yet received any word from them as no debate was held two jears ago and the one which took place last year resulted in a victory for lehigh it is evident that our friends down the river are not anx ious to meet us in this form of contest the names of the following men were proposed for membership : thomas 02 franco 01 curtis 08 and jordan 03 at this stage of meeting the literary program was taken up mr ehlers read a highly interest ing and instructive paper upon the shorter working day in which he brought up many origi nal thoughts in favor of his sub ject the criticism of the last meeting was given in a pleasing way by rogers 03 me mentioned the fact that the attendance at the meeting was rather small in pro portion to the membership of the society and he also cautioned the members to be more careful with their use of words when trying to express their thoughts extempora neously the president announced the debate of the evening which was as follows : eesolved that the united states should interfere with the trials for the cast of a modern ananias which is to be given by the mustard and cheese dramatic association will be held saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in christmas hall it is hoped that a large number of men will turn out for these trials and stage man ager girdler will be glad to give anyone a book and assign him a part so that he will be better pre pared for the trials junior orators the following named have been chosen to speak in the junior oratorical contest to be held friday morning february 22 in the chapel freudenberger donaldson startsman rittenhouse yiehe symington well attended meeting held tuesday evening the mechanical section of the engineering society held a meet ing in packer hall on tuesday evening the paper of the evening was presented by mr fuller 1900 ( on the transportation of petro leum from the oil fields to the seaboard " mr fuller began by giving a short account of the fir-t discov eries and uses of the petroleum and an outline of its development in this country at first the transportation was effected by collecting the oil in barrels and carting it in wagons to some waterway or riilr ad later wooden tanks were erected in the fields to store up the large output such quantities were produced that there was not enough tank and barrel room to hold it and in con sequence iron tanks and tank cars were introduced as soon as iron tubing cam • into use some ingenious fellow laid a 2 inch line from his collecting tank to the river nearby and by the use of a small force pump got his oil to navigation very cheaply in a short time all the oil was piped to railroads or rivers and from this the pipe line system rapidly devel oped so that now the oil is purified from the oil fields to the refineries located on the seaboard or near the market the first long line was a 5-inch wrought iron pipe from bear creek pa to cleveland the longer lines subsequently built to new york and chicago are con structed of 6-inch pipe mr fuller then discussed the difficulties encountered in endeav oring to secure right of ways and also entered upon the problems to be solved in locating and laying a line and then continued as follows the location of pumping stations on the lines is another difficulty the pressure due to the friction of the oil and the topography of the country must be divided between the stations so that the pressure on the pumps and line near the sta tions may not be too great more over the station must be on or very near the direct line to avoid
