united states senators should be elected by direct vote of the people messrs wilkinson and harleman spoke on the affirmative and messrs huggins and barager on the negative mr wilkinson gave the reasons for adopting the present method of election and then showed how these reasons no longer applied he also said that the present method deprived the people of their power and centralized it to a few men mr huggins stated that legisla tures are representative bodies and therefore the senators elected by them are the popular choice and also the men best fitted to lend dignity to their position mr harleman showed that the chances of corruption are greater in the present method than in election by the people and also that the present mode of election is not popular choice mr barager closed the debate by showing that the present method had been successful for 100 years and that it would be folly to throw away a good method because of a few isolated cases which were wrong the judges
