the gymnasium team has been working faithfully for the coming meet with new york university to be held at university heights friday march 9 judging from the lafayette-n y u score on saturday last the contest ought to be a close one the new york men are making elaborate arrange ments for entertaining our team and among other things have ar ranged a dance to be held after the exhibition the list of entries is as follows : horizontal bar — laubenstein 01 reamer 00 parallel bars — ross 00 reamer 00 side horse — harrar 01 grubbe 00 rings — ross 00 parsons 02 fence vault — maeder 00 drake 00 tumbling j j brice 00 reamer 00 clubs reamer 00 high jump drake 00 the judges will be dr h s petti t adelphi academy ; mr robert stoll n y a c and mr julius harder president n.a.g.u the epitome board held an im portant business meeting at the kappa alpha lodge on saturday afternoon final plans for the publication of the book were de cided upon and the publishers will begin work on or before march 15 nearly all the drawings have been submitted and all persons still in tending to send in any work are requested to do so at the earliest possible date the literary com petition will remain open for some time and the board desires every one whose tastes run toward a literary line to try for this prize as up to the present time articles have been coming in very slowly fraternities should see that their inserts and rolls are sent in to h d wilson at once also the different clubs and societies should report either to james or whit ridge immediately all athletic i'eam photos and photos of the different college organizations should be submitted at once and all men not having handed in the epitome blanks are expected to do so without delay the board expects to have the book on sale before the first of may meeting of christian association class book nomina tions a meeting of the mechanical engineering section will be held in packer hall tuesday march 6 at 7.15 p m paper by maeder 1900 on direct process method and its accessories " engineering society civil department the following men have been nominated by the senior class for the senior class book committee : bayard benson fletcher lewis mccormick,ross,shultz and white the election will be held on thurs day at 12.30 in saucon hall at a well attended meeting of the l u c a held in christmas hall on sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock rev mr brodhead of bethlehem gave an interesting discourse on " peace mrs brod head sang several solos in a man ner which lent added interest and charm to the services communication re-examinations will be held as follows : senior subjects — saturday march 24 at 8.30 a m junior subjects — tuesday april 17 at 8.30 a m sophomore subjects — tuesday april 17 at 8.30 a m important notice mando!in club there will be a very important meeting of the mandolin club this evening at 7.30 o'clock in christmas hall digby e e society in the list of lectures in business law published in the last issue of the brown and white the date of each lecture was given as falling on thursday of each week the lectures will be given as hereto fore on wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock instead of thursday a friend of the university who desires for the present to remain unknown established in february 1900 prizes amounting annually to three hundred and forty-five dollars for excellence in english compo sition and oratory the conditi ns of the endowment are as follows ; first at the beginning of each term the sophomore class shall be divided into two sections alphabet iically and to that student in each section who at the end of the term and of each term shall receive the highest rank in english composi tion during that term shall be awarded the " first sophomore composition prize " of ten dollars and to that student in each section as aforesaid who shall receive the next highest rank in the same subject shall be awarded the " sec ond - sophomore composition prize " of five dollars in each year there will be offered four first and four second prizes — a total of sixty dollars if more than one student shall receive the highest rank in any vsection the amounts of the two prizes shall be added together and the sum — fifteen dollars — shall be equally divided between them and bo second prize shall be offered to that section if more than one student shall receive the next highest rank in any section where t.bere i but one contestant for the lir'st prize the second prize shall be equally divided between the two braving the second rank second the faculty shall pub iish within one month from the be ginning of the university year a iist of subjects for dissertations selected from english literature and economics entitled subjects for senior premiums to this list shall be appended a date near toe iirst of january following — to be determined upon by the faculty — when the contest shall be declared closed and the dissertations shall become due from the above list any member of the senior class may select a subject and write thereon a disser tation whose length shall be pre scribed by the faculty and shall send the same anonymously but be marked for identifica'ion as the faculty may direct to the secretary of the faculty before the date afore said the faculty or their committee shall meet on the above date and at subsequent adjourned meetings and first having determined upon a standard of excellence which each and all dissertations must teach in order to be admitted to the following competition shall examine the dissertations sub continued on third page editor the bbown and white it seems very strange that by this time every freshman should not know that an " l or numerals on a sweater means something ;
