campus notes the mass in b minor which is to be given in the moravian church on tuesday march 27 will be one of the greatest musical events ever witnessed in this part of the coun try its composer john sebastian bach was a great musician who lived about 150 years ago in ger many his music is said to be wonderfully impressive and is per haps the most difficult of execu tion of any ever written mr j fred wolle the organist of the packer memorial church is in full charge of the production and will act as musical director on next tuesday mr wolle deserves much credit and encouragement for his work in this connection and the results already show how well directed it has been the chorus which has now been practising for over a year consists of eighty voices all of which have been carefully trained and the fine bach orchestra of thirty pieces will contain the best musicians of the bethlehems the production will be divided into two parts one of which will commence at 4 p.m and the other at 8 p.m seats can not be obtained at the church door so tickets,which are now on sale at the moravian book store should be purchased previous to the evening of the per formance the subject spoken about yester day by professor stewart in his course of lectures on business law was the statute of fraud and the statute of limitations the former of these was first enacted in england during the reign of charles 11 and now every state in the union has a clause on its statute books more or less similar to this original one among other things this pro vides that an original promise to be binding need not be i-n writing but a collateral one is void if it is not written to illustrate " original and collateral promises suppose : first that b sells c some goods and a says if c does not pay for these goods i will ; " this is merely collateral but second if a says give b the goods i will pay for them it is an original agree ment and ais responsible again any agreement • is void after one year if not given in writing but all agreements if executed in good part are binding if oral or not in the absence of any form of agreement the laws recognizes but one — cash ; but the parties to an agreement may agree to any form of payment they desire the second part of the lecture was a discussion of the statute of limitation this provides the per iods in which an action may be brought actions may be real referring to real estate personal or mixed ; and the limitations are usually longer for real actions than for the others there is a twofold foundation for the law of limita tation : first if a debt is not col lected for a long time it is reason able to suppose that there isn't any debt ; and second if a debt is al lowed to continue for a long time it is just that one should hot be able to revive it a promise or acknowledgment of a debt must be in writing to be binding a part payment of a debt takes it out of the law of limitations and this law does not apply to persons under twenty-one or those disabled by sickness or imprisonment or if absent the lecture next wednesday will be upon " negotiable paper in response to a request for opinions as to the practicability of the plan proposed in the petition of the undergraduates about to be pre sented to the trustees the brown and white has received through various channels the following opinions : mr henry a porterfield 83 mr porterfield says : " replying to your letter of the 13th i have read the circular and it seems to me the plan proposed is a good one the writer of this opinion is well known to most the alumni and will long to be remembered as one of the men who so nobly came to the university's assistance when dr drown appealed to the alumni for financial aid the chief expon ent of and largest contributor to the alumni fund was the pittsburg lehigh club of which mr porter field is a very active member the contribution plan adopted by the alumni association last june was proposed by that club and was successfully pulled through by that club's delegation of which mr porterfield was the head he is a graduate who has shown an active working interest in the welfare of all of lehigh's affairs and his ap proval greatly strengthens the un dergraduates petition mr.taylor 95 , is now an attorney at-law in bethlehem and has kept in close contact with the progress of athletics he has acted as a judge at several gymnasium meets and outdoor games and is well known by most of the undergrad uates as well as those men who were in college with him he says : " the plan proposed in the circular you sent me is a good one and i hope you will be successful in your endeavors to have it adopted mr farnham is a graduate of but one year's standing but he is thor oughly acquainted with the present method of collection of athletic dues for he was one of the most active members of last year's collectors these collectors were most active and successful the amount they realized being the high water mark under the present system mr farnham says ; " the new athletic scheme is a good thing push it along wishing you success in this venture etc * * * a mechanic from the delaware susquehanna & schuylkill shops,at drifton pa has been repairing the model locomotive which stands in the large drawing room of the m e department the engine was built by mr daniel coxe at the drifton shops and through much handling was pretty badly used up it has been put in perfect repair and all exposed surfaces liable to rust have been carefully cleaned and coated with tallow the petition of the freshman class asking for a change in the time of the physics lectures has been granted provided that a sat isfactory time can be found the matter is now in the hands of a committee to investigate and re port columbia has announced her football schedule for the coming season and will play eleven games the university of michigan in tends to establish a course in " higher commercial education " which will prepare men for news paper work , ' lehigh university south bethlehem pa thursday march 22 1900 new song book alumni approve vol vii frauds of limitations was discussed by prof stewart yesterday calendar the brown and white letic fees the new plan for ath friday march 23 at 1 1.30 a m college lecture by professor at 4 p m mustard and cheese rehearsal christmas hall saturday march 24 — x\t 8.30 a.m re-examination in senior sub jects civil department re-examination in structu ral and dynamical geology at 2 p m re-examination in freshman chemistry sunday march 25 at 9.30 a.m meeting of bible class christ mas hall at 4 p.m christian asso ciation christmas hall notices phia alumni proposed by philadel at the last meeting of the uni versity club in philadelphia a mo tion was made and carried that a collection of lehigh songs be made and printed with the music in our large book unlike the former col lection this one is such that the songs are to be all original not only the words but also the music it was further decided that liberal prizes be offered to the authors of these songs a committee was ap pointed to look the matter up but as yet we are unable to tell any more about it by next issue the project will be fully explained and it ought to meet the hearty approval of every undergraduate mass in b minor the next college lecture will be delivered by professor lindley m keasby of bryn mawr college on " the political aspect of inter oceanic transit college lecture engineering society there will be a combined meet ing of all the engineering societies of the university on wednesday evening march 28th in the hall of the physical laboratory at eight o'clock mr harvey m watts of philadelphia will read a paper on the weather in the light of mod ern meteorology the paper will be illustrated by lantern diagrams all students of the university are invited to attend this meeting no 41
