first spoke of the improvements and additions which had been made to the college equipment during the summer notably the new testing laboratory of the civil engineer ing department and the improved facilities in the gymnasium the president then spoke of the new faculty rule with regard to attend ance at church on sunday morn ings it seems he said to be a generally accepted principle among college students that no exercise — whether scholastic or devotional — need be attended if there is no penalty attached to absence he was however thoroughly opposed to any form of punishment which in college life usually takes the form of suspension for neglect of religious or devotional service such punishment he thought was not fitting or appropriate and would moreover tend to give a student ?* feeling of repulsion to all religious services which might en dure through life yet he thought a system of marking for attendance or absence from church services which would make it of advantage to a student to be present and a disadvantage to be absent might appropriately be tried and he announced that the faculty had decided to give a mark of ten for attendance and zero for absence from church on sunday morning and that these marks would be combined with the scholastic marks and thus affect a student's rank in his class without affecting his grade in any of his studies continued on fourth page the president then spoke on the subject of college spirit the students as a body lie said had for some time commented on the prevailing apathy with regard to matters of general college interest it was difficult to get full attend ance at class meetings or at college games difficult to collect class dues or athletic dues one reason for this might well be found he thought in the fact that there were no dormitories and that the students were widely scattered over all the bethlehems in the fra ternity houses and lodging places another reason might be found in the fact that the course of study at lehigh is so exacting that one's time and thoughts are pretty well taken up in his work the presi dent was in entire sympathy with the desire of the students to have more interest shown in
