the first of the championship games with lafayette was played on lehigh field saturday and re sulted in a most decisive victory for lehigh this was the first time in four years that lehigh's team was able to withstand the rushes of the ;'; ' maroon and w hite " to force them back yard by yard until the coveted goal was reached and crossed four times without be ing scored upon the much vaunted oftense of lafayette was met and successfully resisted while at no time were the victors consistently held for downs the playing of both teams was superb lehigh excelling both on the offense and defense the ouly way in which lafayette approached the form of the home team was in kicking bray gained slightly over dornin but the fine tackling of lehigh's ends and tackles neutralized the distance gained by the punt time after time the lafayette backs were downed without gain while on the other side this was seldom the case dornin kicked in fine form not one of his attempts being blocked while they were sufficiently high to allow the ends to get well down the field and prevent any returning there were no particular speci mens of individual playing except ing the brilliant ninety five yard run of lehigh's right half which was made possible by the splendid interference of the rest of the team the whole lehigh team moved as a machine while the visitors es pecially after the removal of bray seemed a trifle disorganized at no time after the first few moments of play was lafayette at all danger ous dornin's unfortunate fumble on the kick-oft in the first half gave the ball to lafayette on le high's 15-yard line but lehigh held for downs and the danger was averted lafayette was able to make no consistent gains through the line or around the ends and when tricks were resorted to they usually resulted in losses on the other hand lehigh while opposed by a strong defense was held for downs only some half a dozen times during the entire game no one member of lehigh's team shone above the others ; every man was in the right place at the right time and all tendency toward showy play was covered in the perfect accord with which the men worked together lehigh's plays were mainly straight football but the few tricks indulged in netted occasional large gains the best work for lafayette was done by best bray and rutter the game in detail was as follows : kicked the goal score lehigh 6 ; lafayette 0 time 17 minutes bray kicked off for lafayette and dornin returned to him on lehigh's 50-yard line bray made five yards through the centre but the next three downs resulted in losses and lehigh took the ball james made four on a double pass and gledhill eight around left end the two halves made the necessary ground to retain the ball gled hill was unable to gain and dornin punted to lafayette's 15-yard line on the first line-up bray kicked to mid-field again lehigh began to hammer away toward lafayette's goal carman made two yards in two downs but a tackle play yielded first down gledhill made four yards around right end and on the next play made six more at the same place a line plunge by right half for eight yards followed by two dashes around right end for twelve and four yards respectively brought the ball to lafayette's 20-yard lino where the ball was lost on a fumble bray kicked thirty-five yards to dornin car man made three around right end and time was called with the ball in lehigh's possession on lafay ette's 45-yard line score lehigh 6 ; lafayette 0 second half — dornin made a short kick-off to lafayette's 85 yard line where he regained the ball on a fumble chamberlain made a yard around right end and gled hill obtained first down in the same way chamberlain made three on a plunge through tackle and carman carried the ball to lafayette's 15 yard line but lost it upon being tackled bray made one and two yards on guards back " formations but knight was unable to make the necessary gain and the ball went to lehigh la fayette presented a strong defense and took the ball on downs bray made four yards through the centre but the ball was lost on a fumble carman made five aiound right end but lost the ball again bray seriously injured his sore shoulder in tackling and had to be carried from the field lie was replaced by freed who made seven yards through the centre carter lost five by gearhart's fine tackle and freed kicked thirty yards um pire taussig called the ball back however and gave it to lehigh on lafayette's 85 yard line carman made three yards around right end and nine more on the next play chamberlain gained two and two and dornin three through centre james fumbled but retained the ball gledhill made four through chalmers and lafayette obtained the ball on a fumble freed kicked to mid-field gledhill lost five by rutter's fine tackle a centre play yielded five and dornin kicked to lafa}ette's 15-yard line carman blocked freed's attempt to kick but lafayette retained the ball gledhill blocked the next try and fell on the ball behind the line for a touchdown james punt out was not caught score 11-0 lafayette kicked oft to lehigh r s right half who aided by excellent interference and good dodging ran ninety-five yards for a touchdown making what was probably the prettiest run ever seen on lehigh's football field james kicked goal dornin returned lafayette's next kick-off over the heads of the backs who fumbled and gearhart fell on the ball on lafayette's 85 yard line gledhill made two yards and dornin two more chamberlain made the first down and then made thirty on a delayed pass carrying the ball to the 10 yard line un the next play the ball was rushed over for the fourth touchdown gledhill caught james punt out but the try lor goal was missed by a foot score 22-0 freed kicked oft to chamber lain who made ten yards after advancing fifteen yards mainly on short gains by carman and gled hill dornin kicked to lafayette's 40-yard line freed's kick was short and scovil secured the ball on the 45 yard line james made twenty-five and eight on quarter back tricks but lafayette secured the ball and punted to their 45 yard line lafayette again obtained the ball and kicked to lehigh's 30 yard line where dornin fumbled and aveaver secured the ball for lafayette gearhart threw carter for a loss of eight yards freed kicked and gledhill made six lafayette again gained the ball on a fumble but lost it on lehigh's 15 yard line carman made forty five gledhill two james four and chamberlain ten and time was called with the ball on lafayette's 85-yard line in lehigh's possession score lehigh 22 ; carter was thrown for no gain and bray lost five for fourth down for lehigh gledhill made three yards through right tackle and on the next play carman circled right end with gearhart in the interfer ence and ran fifty yards but the ball was brought back and given to lafayette on their 20 yard line for using hands in the interference bray kicked thirty yards to dor nin who ran it back five ; gledhill made two and carman one but james lost the ball on a fumble rutter lost ten yards but bray gained eight and then kicked to lehigh's 43-yard line now lehigh began an irresistible attack which resulted in a touch down after gaining almost seventy yards by short dashes of two to ten yards each chamberlain went around lafayette's left end for four yards and then made first down through tackle the next play netted ten more through the other end and gledhill made another first down through chalmers chamberlain made three and grled hill ten carman was unable to gain but on the next two downs six yards were made on mass plays resulting in first down the turtle back formation was used to good effect both halves carrying the ball for short but steady gains chamberlain made eight and four and three and one and one and his running partner five and ten and two ; and the ball was le high's on lafayette's 1-yard line with three downs to take it over the line on the first attempt cham berlain plunged through tackle for a touchdown from which james jsto 12
