lacrosse coach gives a more se rious aspect to preparation for the season's contests o'neil received a warm welcome at the gym wednesday he signified his intention to start the daily practice for his candidates in all earnestness with a possibility of scrimmage commencing on monday the first game of the season is scheduled with yale who will invade the local camp on april 9th there seems to be a wealth of material at hand from which to pick an excellent team in addition to the varsity men of last year's squad the following men have already impressed on lookers as very probable first string players law nicola heath nutting f stevens fernandez finnegan aiid wid dowfield many more good men may still be under cover to be brought to light by coach o'neil the freshman squad is very small at present and it is desir ed that more of the yearlings take a try at the stick two games are already scheduled for a freshman team if tfte latter materializes trackmen respond to first call musical program given — prof gipson elected as honorary member coach kanaly outlines sched ule and rules for training prof wright host brilliant prospects final arrangements have been completed for the concert to be given under the direction of the lehigh university y m c a at the south side high school on wednesday evening march 18 the purpose of this concert is to rajse the eight hundred dollars necessary to omplete the budget for the year 1924-25 the concert will be rendered by two most popular and distinguished artists miss frances marie callow harpist and edgar schofield bass-bari miss callow spent her early childhood in the west and there began her harp studies after graduating from vassar she continued her musical education in new york under mildred dilling and in paris under h renie the greatest living harp est since her return to america miss callow has tourned new york and new england and has charmed her audiences with her wonderful skill and marvelous expression the power to interest both the lay and the elect and a su perb command of diction have counted greatly in making scho field the popular artist that he is today his voice has been defined as a bass-baritone owing to the extensive range which permits him to encompass with remark con on page 3 col 5 saturday night at eight-fif teen the brown and white mat men will meet the cornell grap plers at cornell the lehi&h squad has been practicing stren ously for the past week and is now in topnotch conditio for the coming encounter this en gagement with cornell marks the conclusion of lehigh's dual meets and the final meet before the big event — the inter colle giates which will be held at the columbia university march 20 and 21 this meet should be a decisive one for lehigh and it will further illustrate lehigh's chances in the intercollegiate bouts although cornell has been beaten by state and the university of pennsylvania the brown and white grapplers are expecting strong opposition from the ithica sector cornell's heavyweight depart ment which is represented by affelt is its strongest point of attack although affelt is a very clever wrestler lehigh has great faith in levitz their ag gressive heavyweight no word has been received in regards to who will represent cornell on the mat saturday the team will leave tonight at ten-thirty for ithica the last of the fraternity council to run drown hall dance the first convention of the students branch of the ameri can institute of electrical en gineers was held at the moore school of electrical engineer ing at the university of penn sylvania on monday march 9 1925 the institutions repre sented at the convention were princeton drexel delaware swarthmore lafayette villa nova haverford university of pennsylvania and lehigh two hundred and thirty-eight stu dents registered in all with the majority representing the uni versity of pennsylvania the meeting was conducted under the direction of the phil adelphia section of the a i e e a graduate body of engin eers located in that section complete arrangements were made by this organization for the day's activities the purpose of the conven tion was to enable students from the colleges in the vicinity of philadelphia to get together and discuss topics which have been found interesting in their respective colleges and to en able the men to become acquain ted with the students who are studying the same subjects in the neighboring scohols the convention opened at 9:30 monday morning and the period from 9:30 until 10:30 was given to registering and the forming of acquaintance ships among the delegates con on page 4 col 4 e e meet will be held this evening charge of two dollars per cou ple to go to students self aid board awards let ters to athletes at meeting mr alexanderson of radio corporation of america i to speak track championships for middle atlantic conference to be invited to lehigh talk illustrated the faculty educational club held a meeting on wednesday night in the faculty room in the memorial building the fa culty educational club consists of members of the faculty who are interested in pedagogical problems especially those con cerned with college teaching the speaker at the meeting was dean mcconn whose subject was waste in higher educa tion following the address there was held a period of open discussion on the subject the address given by dean mcconn was well delivered and the content was excellent ac cording to dean mcconn's opin ion the most prominent func tion of the university is that of a selective agency selecting those men for graduation who are physically mentally and morally competent to assume po sitions of responsibility and leadership and eliminating those who are not but that we must not forget that students who are here for only one or two years receive benefit also their time is not necessarily wasted dean mcconn stated also dur ing the course of his address what he thought were the throe most prominent reasons for any one's not finishing his college ca reer first on account of finan cial difficulties second because of illness and third on account of poor scholarship it is due to the first reason financial troubles that the univ ought to do all within its power to help the man to stay at this point the speaker expressed a hope that a student employment bu reau would soon become found ed at lehigh although the uni versity is doing a great deal al ready in that line through loan funds the health service bu reau is doing a great deal to al lay the venience of faculty members and employees in the executive offices since the commons has been discontinued faculty mem bers who live at a distance have been very much inconvenienced so it was decided to open a lunch room at present about twen ty persons are being served a committee of faculty members lected the chorus has been struttin its stuff for over a month and the coach has arriv ed in
