columbia issues eighteen publi cations notices junior class meeting a meeting of the junior class will be held immediately after the lecture on saturday morning president sophomore banquet the sophomore banquet will be held at the sun inn bethlehem on tuesday feb 21 at 8.30 p m tickets may be obtained from wilson underbill or wliitricige economic society there will be no meeting of the economic society until tuesday feb 28 prop stewart u of p — lehigh gun shoot on saturday morning at 10.30 a shoot with the university of penn sylvania will be held on the grounds ot the gun club all are cordially invited to attend washington's birthday attendance is required of all students of the university at the junior oratorical contest in packer memorial church at 10.30 on wednesday morning and absences will be recorded juniors and sophomores will occupy their seats in the transept morning prayers will be omitted on this day t m drown president mustard and cheese there will be a rehearsal of act 1 at 4 r m on tuesday special religious services there will be special religious services held in packer memorial church at 7.30 p m on next sun day and the four following ones the faculty and students are invited to attend the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday february 21 1899 entries for the indoor sports vol vi calendar tuesday feb 21 at 4p m rehearsal of act 1 of the gutta-percha girl at 7.30 p m meeting at the delta u house for the purpose of organizing a man dolin club wednesday feb 22 junior ora torical contest in the chapel at 2.30 p m indoor meet with lafayette at easton friday feb 24 at 4.30 p m choir rehearsal saturday feb 25 — at 9.80 a m college lecture — " fortifica tions by captain e l zalinski u s a retired at 10.30 a m shoot with the university of pennsyl vania on the athletic field sunday feb 26 at 6.15 p m meeting of the christian asso ciation in christmas hall _ at 7.30 p m special devo tional services in the chapel tuesday feb 28 at bp m meeting of the economic so ciety in saucon hall wednesday march i at 7 m meeting of the forum in saucon hall baseball the call for candidates for the baseball team yesterday was re sponded to by about twenty-five men a larger number than ' has been noted for some years the work preliminary to outdoor prac tice was outlined by captain grace who will have sole charge of the team until the coming of the coach after the easter recess the work for the present will consist of the usual 5 o'clock drill coupled with practice in the cage the latter is to consist mainly of batting and handling ground balls for the fielders as the ceiling is too low to admit of anything more the pitchers _ will devote most of the time to limbering up and acquiring control of the ball all candi dates for battery positions will be paired oft as most convenient and are then expected to exercise daily in the cage beside the evening work until the completion of the new cage the old one will be used by the batteries the first game of the season will be played here on the 25th of march against rutgers and as it is not likely that much outdoor practice may be had before that time it is absolutely necessary that considerable " attention be given to the indoor work with the array of excellent material at hand there is little doubt that a team will be formed which under the efficient leadership of captain grace will eclipse all previous records made by lehigh teams the list of candidates is as follows : pitchers white 1900 eodney 1900 alder 1901 kelly 1902 catchers carman 99 bachman 1902 eeese 1900 infielders pomeroy 1900 j grace 99 e grace 99 hollingsworth 1900 cortright 1900 ilarleman 1901 musselman 1901 gearhart 1901 parsons 1902 bohannon 1902 thomas 1902 monaghan 1902 outfielders — eeed p g bailey 99 james 1901 sellars 1902 griffith 1902 on saturday morning the trials were held for positions on the gym nasium team to represent lehigh tomorrow in the meet with lafay ette the following is a list of the men who were chosen for the vari ous events which are given in the order in which they will occur in the meet : the flying rings : j j eeamer 00 ; the third one being e e wilson from the allentown y m c a the epitome the epitome board is sorry that it is obliged to appeal to the col lege at large and to our alumni for the support that it ought to receive without an appeal and which we hoped would be elicited by our last article in the brown and white in my last article i tried to state my views of what the epitome is or rather what it ought to be the epitome ought to represent lehigh ; lehigh life lehigh cus toms and lehigh spirit if it fails in this it is not worth the publi cation it should represent le high from her greenest freshman to her gayest alumnus and it must do it if it is to be worthy of con sideration the epitome is pub lished by the junior class and edited by a few men selected from that body but if it represents nothing but the effort of those men it will inevitably be a failure and will deserve to be rated as such every lehigh man whether he be a graduate under-graduate instructor or professor should feel that he is to some extent the extent being measured by his ability responsible for the merits and demerits of the book he should take pleasure in helping to make the epitome a book that we can give to the world with pride — with a pride born of the know ledge that the book is good at present a few of our alumni are coming to our rescue bravely ; one or two men in the senior class are doing all that could be ex pected of any one ; one or two sophomores are doing something and a few men not connected with the college are helping us we don't want you to think that we are discouraged we are not the few who are helping us are doing such good work that even now we feel that we can promise to turn out as good a book as le high has ever issued the point is simply this : we are not satisfied with rivaling other epitomes we want to turn out an annual that will rival any college annual in the country other colleges are send ing out better and better books 1 each year and unless we establish a new and higher standard we will be behind the game now undergraduates and gradu ates instructors and professors are you not just a little bit ashamed that these few men are forced to make this herculean effort while you sit passively and await the issue ? don't you think it is your duty to get in line and help them ? whether we like it or not people are going to judge us and our alma mater by our works,and the epitome is one of them d g mcgavock editor-in chief the general alumni society of the university of pennsylvania has agreed to raise 100,000 for the establishment of sixteen new schol arships the regents of brown university haye selected a man for the presi dency of the institution but will not as yet divulge his name the university of pennsylvania and the university of michigan have arranged a football game for next fall to take place on nov 11 at philadelphia it lias been practically decided that the cornell crew will not meet harvard or yale this year owing to the unwillingness of the two latter crews to row at pough keepsi no 33
