intercollegiate gym nasium meet mr converse spoke before the mechanical engineering society on the above subject in part as follows : the machinery for the com position of type has made very slow progress and for a long while it was deemed by many to be im practicable during the past few decades however slow but sure progress has been made and al though by no means perfect yet so many ingenious minds are still working on the subject that within a few years we may look for de cided improvements the first efforts in this line re sulted in the design and construc tion of several machines which would set the type at a very rapid rate but left the two most difficult operations undone i c justifying and distributing having to use hand labor to accomplish these two operations increased the cost to such an extent that there was little or no saving in the use of these machines one of the first important steps in overcoming these two great difficulties was the nicking of the type the distribution was then effected by having the type passed along channels and when a par ticular character met projections corresponding to its own nicks it would drop out into a bin prepared for that character this arrange ment seems to have disposed of the problem of " distribution but that of justification remained by justification is meant the proper spacing of a line that is after the line is so full that not another word or syllable can be gotten in it there will be a little room left which must be equally divided in the spaces between the individual words each line neces sarily having to be of the same length as far back as fifty years ago there were machines which set the type in a long continuous line which was broken up and justified " by hand among the difficulties to be met with m the justification of type are first that all lines do not contain the same number of words and spaces and second that the size of the individual and aggregate space varies widely in successive lines it may now be asked why the overcoming of this difficult prob lem is attempted when by means of line-casing machines it is averted in these machines as the name implies an entire line of type is cast just as it is to be printed then it has to be melted and re cast for newspaper work " line-casting " machines give satis factory enough results but for the better classes of work they cannot be used one of the most clever and suc cessful devices yet brought forward was conceived by mr cox who made the spaces which are south bethlehem pa friday march 24 1899 indoor athletic meet vol vi type setting machin ery the brown and white lehigh university calendar friday march 24 — at 7 p m meeting of the mathematical club in professor thornbnrg's lecture room saturday march 25 at 2.30 p m baseball lehigh vs eutgers indoor meet with eutgers at new brunswick at 7 p m sharp mandolin club rehearsal sunday march 26 — at 6.15 p m meeting of the christian asso ciation in saucon hall at 7.30 p m special re ligious services in the chapel tuesday march 28 — baseball team starts on southern trip wednesday march 29 at 12.30 p m easter recess begins wednesday april 5 — at 8.15 a m easter recess ends on wednesday evening lehigh participated in a dual indoor meet with the mauch chunk y m c a at the latter's gymnasium lehigh won by a score of 43 to 11 first place in each event count ing 5 second 3 and third 1 through the very hospitable treat ment accorded the visiting team this was the most enjoyable trip of the season the following is a list of the events with those who won in each : parallel bar — first j j eeamer lehigh ; the conditions im posed upon her in return for this protection were that she should maintain a stated number of troops in the field in case of war expend a certain amount of money for war purposes and change her small arms for improved ones in case france did so all this means an increase of the extremely heavy burden under which italy is now laboring but even this does not deter her from demanding a slice of china " opposed to this is the dual alliance between france and eussia the elder napoleon once said ' europe will be all cossack or all republican 1 and today german politicians will tell you that their real enemy is not krance but russia " there is no doubt that eussia is going to be the most powerful european state she is slowly slipping down over eastern europe displacing the old teutonic peas antry with poles and slavs we can hardly understand the height of the religious zeal and the devotion of the russian people to the czar and the government moreover eussia has a homo geneous population and for these reasons after the united states is the most powerful nation of the world hence the alliance of eussia a powerful nation though about three centuries behind west ern europe with france one of the most progressive of countries is not fully understood until it is continued on third page notices l u supply bureau we are again forced to urge those men having bills at the supply bureau to make settlement immediately the bureau has liabilities of no small amounts which absolutely must be met at once we further desire to reiterate the fact that the bureau is not supposed to do a credit business but has done so to accommodate the men in no case have we agreed to allow a bill to run over a month but several have come over from first term's account these men should settle at once we have given favors and now we are anxious for cash in return the bureau has always sustained a good credit but unless its patrons are more considerate of their obli gations we have little assurance for the future we trust this one notice will suffice to bring the matter before the men in a proper light and relieve the management of its present embarrassing position we must have the cash before the easter vacation a lecture dr drown will deliver a lecture on " scientific research as a factor in education " before the educa tional club of the normal school in philadelphia tonight the first baseball game of the season will be that between le high and eutgers or lehigh's field tomorrow at 2.30 o'clock admission 50 cents placed between the words corru gated and the line is " set " until it is a little greater than the normal length when it is reduced to the proper length by pressure exerted on both ends of the line mr converse explained the principal type setting - , machines and various arrangements for justification by means of a num ber of sketches in the intercollegiate gymnasi ium meet which will be held under the auspices of the uni versity of new york in new york this evening lehigh will be represented by j j eeamer 1900 mr eeamer has entered all of the events including the horizontal and parallel bars the horse tum bling club swinging and the rings cups will be given for first second and third in each event and a cup will also be given to that contestant scoring the most points judging by the excellent work which reamer has done in this line of athletics he will undoubt edly make a very good showing tonight the following universi ties and colleges will be represent ed : yale harvard princeton university of pennsylvania le high cornell columbia amherst weslyan union lafayette eut gers swarthmore brown ilaver ford trinity union theological seminary and new york uni versity the university of virginia has received a gift of 10,000 for the purchase of books devoted to vir ginia history no 42
