the championship games are to be won swarth more did not play a brilliant game but their work throughout was steady and showed that they were doing their best to keep down the score the game was called at 3:40 p iff and after some very pretty passes on the part of symington digby and abbot the first goal was shot by abbott after 30 sec onds of play swarthmore hastily reciprocated however and after 1 minutes of play their first goal was shot by seaman score 1-1 the game for the rest of this half was rather loosely played on both sides with the exception of occasional spurts on the part of meeting last night in professor thornburg's lecture room the paper of the evening was presented by mr fuller of 1900 and was entitled " taylor's series based on kolle's theorem mr fuller was not a member of the club but prepared his paper as a candidate for ad mission according to the rules and also a contestant for the prize so kindly offered by professor merri man to the man presenting a paper in the best snape before the club the offer was intended as a stimu lus to those interested in mathe matical subjects and it is hoped that others will signify their in tention in the near future of be coming candidates for admission as it is desired to have as large and flourishing a membership as possible the paper as presented last evening by mr fuller consisted essentially in a derivation of taylor's series by kolle'stbeorum without the aid of the calculus although using the calculus nota tion and in demonstrating that for infinitely convergent series the error made in using taylor's series in calculations may be rendered negligibly small an exponential function of the sum of two variables was first assumed and was then expanded by the binomial theorem and re written with the calculus nota tion of prime functions the function first taken was as sumed to be continuous between two limits and finite for all values of the variable between those lim its a general series of the same form as the first was thus derived for the approximate calculations of the function for arbitrarily assigned values of the independent variable an application was then made of rolle's theorem which is that if a function of x and its first derivative are finite and continuous from x equals a to x equals b and if the same function of a and b are each equal to zero then the prime func tion of x must vanish for some value of x between a and b from this the desired series was derived and an expression obtained fu the error which as was shown could be made sufficiently small to any degree of accuracy is the num ber of terms of the series he made sufficiently large from taylor's series maclaurin's series was pro duced upon the conclusion of the paper there was a short discussion par ticipated in by messrs benedict viehe and coutant upon motions the club tendered mr fuller a vote of thanks for his paper and then elected him to membership adjournment was then had as no further
