lehigh university south bethlehem pa wednesday june 14 1899 commencement edition the brown and white no 61 university week vol vi i those dead were no longer remem bered i can see now that i was wrong those go d people still live and even in this world have not ent rely perished ; the town is itself an evidence of their existence the time will come when that small town will be no more but america wilt be here and when america is no more humanity will be her , and people will say that it was a good country and when humanity is no more we shall be in the bosom of god he does not forget though men may be assured therefore that not a cup of cold water offered in his name not a word contributed to the morality of this world will go without its reward retary read the roll members of the class being designated by the nick names by which they were known during iheir four years in college l t rainey followed with the class poem which was unusually well written robt farnham was then introduced as the presentation orator and he filled his position very creditably not all of the members of the class were fortu nate — or unfortunate — enough to receive presents from mr farnham whose jokes regarding his gifts were all enjoyed by the audience if not by those who received them in the cup contest which followed g r jackson was awarded custo dian and after this v h reid read the class prophesy the senior class the committee who arranged the exercises were s geo r jackson chairman ; robt j farnham jr henry h wilcox bernard t converse and henry r palmer university day a large and appreciative audi ence composed of alumni friends of the university and the numerous iriends and relatives of the gradu ates gathered in lehigh's beautiful chapel this morning to witness the thirty-first annual commencement soon after the college bell marked the hour of 10.30 the members of the senior class heeding its sum mons for the last time marched up the aisle of the chapel preceded by the trustees faculty and in structors of the uni versity all clad in caps and gowns whose sombre black stood out in striking con trast to the brilliant colors with which the audience was aglow the exercises were begun by a musical selection rendered by the choir and after the reading of the scrip ure and prayer the salutatory oration was given by mr john sage viehe of georgia his subject being " personality " another beautiful rendition by the choir followed when mr leon whetstone bailey of delano pa delivered an oration upon " four plundred years of spanish do minion abram peters steckel of lykens pa came next with an oration containing many beau tiful thoughts upon the subject the lower and higher selfishness the annual alumni address was de livered by mr eufus k polk b s e m of the class of 1887 he chose as his subject our industrial progress and in glow ing te»ns described the advance ment made along the industrial lines in recent years another seleciion was given by the choir and then mr eugene gifford grace of goshen n j the vale dictorian of the class directed the minds of the audience into the future in his oration upon " the future of electricity concluding his remarks with a very affection ate farewell to the members of his the choir sang a hymn and then dr drown arose and announced those fortunate ones who secured the prizes keaker beeerra straiib converse steekel klmball benedict ltnlney veihe morgan maeknlght <. ir ll ill bradenbangh mcknigut shlmer mlddlcdlth home lliuimim gummeim buakland ivnn alien j grace italliy >■'-. grace keod i)ornin degener croll gandla wilcox birth spiers masson wood palmer held klein keys horn ir carman newton ro'relo gaprllea jackson farnliam continued on second page the exercises on the campus were ended by the tablet oration by wm l maeker the class and audience then marched to the chapel where the ivy oration was delivered by 11 a wilcox which concluded the program the program was interspersed with numerous musical selections by the allentown band the officers of the class are : president maurice c benedict of altoona vice president j fred allen of florida n y secretary wm l meaker of bethlehem treasurer jose f capriles of puerto cabello venezuela historian abram p steckel of lykens athletic eepresentative at large leon w bailey of delano university sunday the exercises of commencement week began sunday morning at 11 o'clock with baccalaureate services in the chapel conducted by the right rev ethelbert tal bot d.d l.l.d bishop of central pennsylvania and the rev fre t erick m bird the graduating class in cap and gown were present in a body ; their relatives and friends together with under graduates and towns people filled the chapel to overflowing under the direction of mr j fred wolle the university choir rendered very efficiently the processional " i heard a sound of voices around the great white throne the reces sional go forward christian soldiers and the nymns lord of all being throned afar and 0 love that will not let me the baccalaureate sermon was preachec by the rev elwoo worcester ph.d s t.d formerly chap lain of the university now rector of st stephen's church philadelphia who took for his text corinthians xv 46 " howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual during the course of his ser mon dr worcester referred feelingly to his former connec tions with lehigh stating that some of the happiest years of his life had been spent on the university at the end of the sermon dr worcester addressed the graduating class concluding his remarks somewhat as follows : the illusions of life are beautiful while they last but the reality is still more beautiful to eyes strong enough to bear the sight one of the illusions we hear of is that life is long but in reality life is short and therefore make haste life is a serious matter ; therefore be honorable young men for only honorable people do their work with a light heart as you grow older you will realize that the portions of your life which you have devoted to evil at best are simply lost i remember going once with my sainted mother to an old cemetery in a small town where the dead lay buried i was very young then but the sight affected me profoundly i thought then that class day exercises a large and fashionable audience in which many visitors and friends of the graduates were noticed gathered on the campus near the 96 memorial steps on monday afternoon to listen to 99's class day exercises — one of ihe most enjoyable parts of commencement week the inspiring music the large number of pretty girls and the interesting program all tended to make the day a most successful as well as pleasant one promptly at 2 o'clock the class assembled at packer hall and preceded by the allentown band marched to the stand at the vine street entrance president benedict in a few well chosen remarks called the class to order for the last time as a body of lehigh undergraduates the sec
