electrical engineering so ciety held a special meeting on thursday oct 2 the meeting was called to order by the presi dent at 7.30 o'clock with quite a number of seniors and juniors present after reading the min utes the following men were elected to membership : from 98 schwecke moritz, watts hershey yorks hazel and george from 99 birch viehe bailey rainey and steckel the paper of the evening was read by homer 98 on " storage batteries an ex tract of the paper is given below : storage batteries are based on the principle that the passage of an electric current through water results in its decomposition into its component gases hydrogen and oxygen if two lead plates are used as the conductors and a little sulphuric acid is put in the water a thick brown coating is seen on the positive plate where oxygen is given off and when the external circuit is afterwards com pleted we find that the lead plates themselves will generate a current the theory might therefore be put in this way : the passage of a current through a combination of lead plates immersed in dilute sul phuric acid effects a current chemical change in the condition of the plates as this change takes place a certain amount of energy is stored up by the current and this energy becomes available again in the form of an electric current when the plates are connected through an external circuit the total amount of this energy varies directly as the amount of peroxide of lead formed and as the amount of surface of lead exposed to the current this oxidizing action does not extend to any depth in the plates the part of the plates undergoing this chemical change is said to be active in all lead storage batteries one of the objects desired is to obtain a large lead surface for a small mass as the capacity and discharge rates are proportional to the extent of surface exposed the usual way now of getting this surface is to cast a frame of lead with raised n angle ribs on each side giving small depressed squares these squares are then filled with a pasty mixture of red oxide of lead for the positive plate and with letharge the reddish protoxide of lead for the negative plate plates made in this way are always giving trouble during heavy discharge disintegration of the positive plate takes place and causes short-cir cuiting and buckling these troubles are not so apt to occur in a form of cells known as the chloride cell so called on account of the plates constituting the elements the elements are made up of tablets cast from fused chlorides of lead and zinc held continued on third page the
