professor william ulrich founder and principal of the pre paratory school in bethlehem at which so many students have been prepared for the lehigh univer sity died thursday nov 18 of bright's disease aged fifty years the news of his death will be re ceived with the deepest regret by his wide circle of friends and for mer students professor ulrich received a su perior education in his native land germany and entered the uni versity of berlin in 1866 in that year his studies were interrupted as he volunteered for service in the german army entering the emperor alexander guards gren adier eegiment no 1 he served in the austro-prussian and fran co-prussian wars and was severely wounded at gravelotte and during the siege of paris he graduated in the fall of 1871 receiving the degree of doctor of philosophy in the university of berlin in 1872 he arrived in america fraternally he was a prominent free mason knight templar and odd fellow he was a vestryman of trinity episcopal church he is survived by his widow and three children his aged mother and a sister in germany «. yale university is the first to establish a system of pensions for teachers in their old age any professor who has served twenty five years may retire at sixty-five upon an allowance equal to about half his salary james lost on the quarter back trick holderness punted to la fayette's 10-yard line lafayette punted but the ball was brought back and given to lehigh for in terference eeese went through the line for a touchdown but was called back because the ball had not been put in play by the referee a mass play failed to gain and holderness tried a drop kick,which was blocked lehigh getting the ball another drop kick was tried but it went a little wide of the posts lafayette punted out from their 25-yard line to holderness who re turned the kick boyd and worth ington made ten yards and then lehigh held for four downs le high lost twelve yards and holder ness kicked worthington made twenty yards and wiedenmeyer went through the line for a touch down einehart kicked an easy goal score 6-0 on a double pass einehart re turned the kick-off to the centre of the field boyd made four and two yards eeese threw worth ington for a loss of three yards boyd and worthington gained two and ten and three and eight yards respectively and wieden mejer went through for a second touchdown einehart kicked an other goal score 12-0 einehart caught holderness's kick-off and passed to worthing ton whom chamberlain downed after a gain of five yards bray now kicked to holderness dor nin failed to gain at this point lehigh's team was weakened by the loss of captain gunsolus who was compelled to retire on account of an injured knee however clarke who took his place put up a good game holderness kicked to bray lafayette returned the ball by a kick to lehigh's 45 yard line eeese and van duyne failed to gain and lafayette returned the ball on holderness's fumble wie denmeyer boyd worthington and bray made gains carrying the ball to lehigh's 10-yard line here boyd failed to gain clark threw wiedenmeyer for four yards loss and worthington failed to gain around the end lehigh got the ball on downs and holderness kicked to the middle of the field chamberlain tackling the lull-back before he advanced worthington and boyd each made three yards and then lehigh again held for four downs dornin made four yards on a fake kick and time was called with the ball in lehigh's possession on her 35-yard line score at end of first half 12-0 in the second half the game was even more stubbornly contested by the home team than in the first and more kicking was resorted to by both teams holderness kicked off to the 10-yard line and eine hart returned to the 30 yard line before he was downed lafayette being unable to gain the required continued on third page football lafayette 22 ; lehigh o on thanksgiving day lafay ette defeated lehigh by the above score in a game on home grounds which showed more genuine le high pluck than any that has been seen here for years the light home team played a magnificent game and time after time held lafayette for four downs when lehigh's goal was in danger that the team's work was highly satisfactory to the college was shown by the hearty cheering which was kept up throughout the game nor was lafayette without her admirers as two or three hun dred enthusiasts accompanied the team from easton and yelled for the team whenever the chance presented itself there was a large representation of beth lehem and easton society people at the game and the grand stand was crowded with fair football en thuiasts ' who waved their flags and cheered for their favorites over two thousand people witness ed the game and although the ma roon and white of lafayette was largely in evidence the good old brown and white of lehigh had the larger number of admirers the game was much more closely contested than the score would seem to indicate ; " was then participated in messrs childs horn and kobin son presented the affirmative and messrs notts barrientos and el der the negative the judges de cided in favor of the affirmative and were upheld in their decision by a vote of the society on mo tion adjourned professor trowbridge of har vard who has been perfecting a storage battery for use in investi gations of the x-ray has succeeded in making the most powerful ap paratus of the kind in the world it has a voltage of 2,200,000 by means of this apparatus professor trowbridge has been able to prove beyond a doubt that the length of the spark is accurately propor tional to the voltage wesleyan has instituted a trophy room similar to that of yale chauncey m depew will preside over the harvard-yale debate at new haven on dec 3 professor ulrich ex pires
