varsity grapplers to face nittany lions saturday funeral service held in packer memorial church fordham five hand home team defeat in fast game swimmers visit rutgers and army set of resolutions in ex-profes sor's memory drawn up at faculty meeting revered professor buried with solemn ceremonies — chapel crowded with students paying their last respects to oldest member of faculty rutgers having overwhelmed army is most formidable opponent spectacular week-end to be substitute for house party state team is inter-collegiate champion last year a man of striking personality weems to play new york collegians remain undefeated as result of victory over lehigh scratch weight required score is 37-24 always exceedingly interested in students and their affairs prof lambert was a very popular committeeman and invaluable to faculty coach sheridan expects hard est meet of the season tomorrow play is fiercely contested througout entire game at the faculty meeting last tuesday afternoon the entire time was devoted to drawing up a set of resolutions in memory of professor lambert it was also decided that classes should cease for the day at 2 45 p m in order to allow the student body and faculty to attend mem orial services in packer chapel the text of the resolutions is as follows inasmuch as it has seemed best to divine providence to re move from our midst our belov ed professor lambert senior member of the faculty of le high university over forty years a teacher on our campus a most active and revered alum nus esteemed educator and member of many scientific socie ties be it hereby resolved first : that we the faculty of lehigh university do here record our feeling of griet and personal loss in having taken from us his example of con on page 4 col 5 the swimming team will be away over this week-end to meet the rutgers team on friday af ternoon and the army on sat urday afternoon of these two strong teams rutgers will be the hardest opponent to defeat practically the same team as last year will oppose lehigh — that of the diving position being filled by bennet in the place of galbraith bennet will not be as formidable as galbraith was last year which will give capt astarita an excellent chance for a first position foster warner and rosetti will prove to be strong swimmers especially foster who has been starring in all their meets in the army clash bliss and harrington will no doubt show up well in the diving while o'keefe vanatta and elliott will represent the cadets as fast natators in their classes re cently rutgers easily defeated the army team by the score ot 41 to 18 the cadets won only first place — bliss taking the div ing event dinners tendered by kappa sigs to honored seniors frosh matmen meet liberty high wrestlers scientific publications and was lately engaged in writing a sim plified text he was a member of the phi beta kappa and tau beta pi honorary societies and belonged to the natvity episco pal church in 1891 he received the degree of m a from le high furthermore he was ac tively affiliated with the amer ican philosophical society american association for the advancement qf science the american mathematical society and the society for the promo tion of engineering education professor lambert was a na tive of this region having been born in lower saucon town ship he was twice married and is survived by his second wife nee alice knauss of philadelphia ; two daughters and three sons ; and one brother rev w a lambert of the uni versity faculty ever loyal and sincere toward the university his memory shall become a tradition in the history of lehigh university bout to be held in gymna sium of local high school annual pilgrimage of seniors e e s liberty undefeated freshman team is greatly augmented by new material spend four days in n y studying points of engin eering interest esty conducts the varsity wrestling team will meet the nittany lions at state college on saturday feb ruary 21st state it will be re membered holds the inter-colle giate wrestling championship as a result of the trials held at yale last march this meet is considered by both institutions as the most important on their respective schedules the out come of the meet will in a de gree determine which college will be the inter-collegiate champions this season up to the present time state has not been defeated on the mat among the teams which have been defeated by them are muhlenberg university of pennsylvania and cornell in the first two meets the opposing teams were not able to score a single point while state ran up large scores according to com parative scores state is by far the most dangerous rival that lehigh will meet this season the outstanding men on the state team are captain carey 115 lb inter-collegiate cham pion b black 145 lb intercol legiate champion and jules pre vost their heavyweight thru out the season the work of lig gett in the 135 lb class has been very remarkable and in a word state has one of the very best teams i nthe history of that in stitution coach sheridan has been working particularly hard with the varsity squad this past week in preparation for this im portant meet con on page 4 col 5 the lineup will in all prob ability be the same which op posed springfield last saturday there may be some changes in the 115 and 145 lb classes due to the fact that state required a scratch weight williamson and reed have in the past ex perienced some difficulty in get ting down to the exact weight and it is doubtful whether coach sheridan will permit these men after a long rest from any real meets the freshmen wrest lers will try to stop the winning streak of the liberty high grap plers the meet is to be held in the gymnasium of the local high school saturday and is scheduled to start at 8 30 p m since the closing meet with the baltimore city college wrestlers which was before the recent mid-year examinations the 1928 squad has been daily working out on the mats under the careful eyes of coach sneri dan many glaring faults which were revealed in the first meet con on page 4 col 3 in the fastest and best played game seen in taylor gymna sium this season the lehigh bas ketball team met defeat at the hands of the visiting team from fordham wednesday night be fore a large crowd though leading at the end of the first half by a 17-14 score the ma roon and gold five from new york overcame this slim lead and gained a substantial lead of 37-24 at the final blow of the whistle from the opening jump until the final bell from the time keeper's bench the game was close and both teams were play ing all the basketball they knew the visitors came down to bethlehem with the idea that they would have an easy game though they did manage to win they had one of their hardest games and knew throughout every minute of the forty min utes of play that they had to be on their toes during the first half lehigh defended the south goal and after breaking the six all tie were in the lead until the end of the first half with the change of baskets lehigh's scoring power slumped and all the long shots aimed at the south basket missed their mark though some of them circled the steel hoop quavered and finally fell on the wrong side in the second half lehigh resorted to long shots almost entirely due to the watchfulness of the gotham guards which made it difficult for a lehigh man with the ball to get within safe scoring range of the goal in this half lehigh tried the five man defense tho not far enough down the floor to prevent the visiting forwards to take careful shots at the le high basket zackszewski who has been seen around here with fordham was the star of the game with six double-deckers to his cred it the fordham coach follow ed notre dame's famous policy and started the game with the second string men save man ning who deserved more watch ing than he got though he did no scoring himself he was one of the big if not the biggest contributing factor of ford ham's triumph lehigh's forwards seemed to have an off day and between them scored seven points wein stein the fleet footed guard managed to sneak through the fordham defense long enough con on page 4 col 1 notice there will be a tea dance given at the church of the nativity by miss claire sayre on the following sat urday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock the students of the moravian seminary and bish opthorpe manor will be pres ent and all lehigh students are invited a small admis sion will be charged baldwin's car in crash coach jim baldwin of le high university last week fig ured in an automobile crash when his machine was struck by another driven by julius greenberg 223 north west street allentown at broad and high streets this city baldwin's machine was slightly damaged but no ar rest was made both agreeing to a settlement of damages as has previously been an nounced the annual spring dance of the sophomore cotil lion is to be held on friday feb ruary 27 in drown hall from nine till two no possible expense has been spared so that from every aspect this affair promises to be one of the most elaborate of many years at a far greater cost than that of any other occasion ted weems orchestra has been engaged to play for the night this band is the one which for years made the cafe l'aiglon of philadel phia so famous and the one which made for itself the name of one of the leading orchestras in the east by their recorded music with it comes ted weems in person another feaure of the dance will be the unique type of pro gram which is to be issued this will be a special cotillion publi cation of the burr with a spe cial cover and full quota of jokes and cuts all reduced to one-third the regular size and supplement ed with two program pages in the center the decorations for the hall that night are to be executed by the largest interior decorator of allentown and one of the lead ing florists of bethlehem so that not only will the dance be perfect in every detail but it will be one of the most elobar ate ever given in drown hall all in all it seems assured that this will be the big social event of the year for it is one of the biggest dances and will be the closest approach to house parties this spring the week end as a whole is a complete house party program in itself on the saturday afternoon fol lowing the cotillion there is to be a wrestling meet with yale at taylor gymnasium and that evening a basket-ball game with lafayette which due to the dance has been changed from easton to bethlehem after this game is over there is to be a ball room dance at the hotel bethlehem with the atlantic city hotel traymore orchestra supplying the music judging by the plans being made this affair also promises to be a great success the cotillion tickets have been put on sale this week and can be obtained from the fol lowing men covert chi psi lodge kirkwood alpha tau omega house smith phi gam ma delta house ; oswald sigma phi epsilon house hays beta theta pi house nutting phi delta theta house and bartoo phi sigma kappa house in honor of the death of the most beloved member of the le high faculty late afternoon classes on wednesday afternoon were suspended so that the stu dent body might attend the fu neral services of the late pro fessor preston a lambert the funeral ceremony was appro priately held in the university chapel and that large hall was completely filled by students faculty and friends as the im pressive rites of the epsicopal church were conducted by rev gateson no better estimate of the love of the university to ward professor lambert may be conceived than by the number who honored his memory on wednesday afternoon the oldest member of the un iversity faculty staunchjißup porter of the student body and of striking personality the name of professor lambert came to embody the scholastic ideals of the university every worthy collegiate project was enthusiastically backed by his energy and of recent years he came to be recognized as a mem ber of virtually every important faculty committee his unerring judgment made him an inval uable member of such commis sions and he was largely influ ential in the selection of dr richards to succeed president emeritus drinker to the presi dency as well as in planning the new memorial building it was in the classroom how ever that professor lambert first won students to him by in jecting his personality and hu mor into the instruction of the most complicated of all subjects mathematics it was his cus tom to start each class by mak ing unusual comments on its members and by actually kid ding them into such an attitude that for them mathematics was the most thrilling of subjects his method of instruction was entirely original as well as suc cessful and he invariably threat ened smiling students by char acteristic shaking of his favor ite cane the memory of his professorship has become a tra dition of the university professor lambert resided in bethlehem for the greater part of his life and he graduated from lehigh in 1883 having studied extensively both in this country and abroad he was a profound student of mathemat ics he often contributed to the sword and crescent so ciety enjoyed an excellent din ner at the kappa sigma house last monday evening the guest of honor was dean mc conn and the attendance of club members was almost one hun dred per cent the principal discussion of the evening was on the subject of student government al bayles and mike callow pre sented a plan on the suggestion of dean mcconn that all pres ent standing faculty commit tees composed of both faculty and student members bosey reiter expressed his hearty approval of the plan and by his knowledge of lehigh and lehigh men felt sure that the plan would be highly suc cessful in operation the sword and crescent so ciety unanimously resolved to back up the plan as presented and to recommend the same to the arcadia for adoption un der the plan as proposed the ar cadia is to be composed of the heads of the various living groups the society passed a resolu tion extending their utmost sympathy to mrs p a lam bert and family twenty-two members of the electrical engineering depart ment of the university spent the greater part of last week on an inspection trip in new york the members of the tour under the direction of professors wil liam esty and j l beaver left bethlehem the morning of feb ruary 10 and made their head quarters at the hotel claridge the intinerary included visits to the harrison lamp co on tuesday morning and where the process of the manufacture of lamps was viewed and atten dance at the technical session of a l e e convention in the afternoon on wednesday afternoon the group spent a
