tflrich in 1878 will hereafter be conducted by h a foering b s lehigh 90 every endeav or will be made to increase the number of its students as well as later the number of departments mr foering is well known to le high students and graduates and there is every reason to believe that the school will prosper and add many names to future classes at lehigh the department of latin and greek will be in the direct charge of dr hyde of the university there are at present more classical students in the school than for some years past it is hoped this department very soon will be in creased in numbers further announcements will soon he made in this paper in re gard to other changes mr wolle's organ re cital the following extract from the new york tribune gives a short account of the organ recital that mr wolle the organist of the college chapel gave last friday evening in new york there are a number of alumni in new york and a large number of them were at the recital judging from the criticisms of the press the recital was quite a success such a fin ished artist as mr wolle deserves the most hearty support of all music loving people the tri bune speaks as follows : in the asssembly hall of the presbyterian building at fifth avenue and twentieth street — a most admirable music room by the way — j fred wolle gave an organ recital last night mr wolle is organist of the moravian church and director of music at the moravian seminary in bethlehem pa and organist of packer memorial church lehigh univer sity being of a moravian family he is musically inclined and hav ing been trained by s p warren here and by professor rhein berger in munich he is musically well bred his scheme of pieces was serious making no concessions to the tastes of the flippant or careless yet it proved through the skill of the player to be extremely entertaining it be gan with bach's fantasia and fugue in g minor this was fol lowed by rheinberger's twelfth sonata two movements from the fourth and second organ sympho nies of widor a transcription by the concert-giver of siegfried's funeral march inscribed to mr warren and an allegro by thiele mr wolle is an organist of excel lent parts ; his scholarship is souud his aims dignified his tech nical skill ample fie believes in varied registration and practices it perhaps a little too much but his playing is smooth lucid and re poseful it was a pleasure to make his professional acquaintance circular of the civil engineering de partment the civil engineering depart ment will shortly issue a new cir cular containing some alterations and improvements on the old one the subject matter is divided into twelve chapters chapter i gives the requirements for the admission of new students which do not differ materially from those of this year with the exception of one year's german being required chapter 11 gives the program of studies for all four years of the course the principal changes are three hours of steam engine in the second term sophomore and the transfer of the theory of geodesy and geodetic surveying from the first term senior to the first term junior year descriptive astron omy is taken from first term senior to second term junior and practi cal astronomy is completed during the first term senior year in the third chapter the history and plan of the institution is given together with a record of its growth and partiaularly of this department of all the graduates of the university since 1869 over one-third have received the degree of c e chapters iv and v are devoted to the fundamental and general in struction received during the freshmen and sophomore years this includes such subjects as phy sics mechanics and pure matehmat ics subjects that are common to all the engineering courses chapter vi treats of surveying which ex tends over four terms including land and town surveying topo graphic surveying geodetic sur veying and railroad surveying the work in topographic survey ing is done in three weeks of the summer vacation between the sophomore and junior years in chapters vii viii and ix the subjects taken up in the higher classes are considered including construction and strength of ma terials hydraulic and sanitary engineering and bridge engineering chapter x gives the technical subjects given by other depart ments to all civil engineering stu dents chapters xl and xii are devoted to the thesis work and the post-graduate work required for the degree of m s respec tively luten 99 who left college last june to accept a position on the l & n railroad will return next year owing to illness dr franklin has been unable to meet his classes for several days lie expects to resume his duties today gratz 98 is the college agent for the special athletic magazine afield and afloat s c c meeting the sophomore cotillon club met at the sigma phi house on friday evening to complete the arrangements for the first dance to be given at the eagle hotel on the evening of dec 10 after hearing the reports from the various committees mr zal inski was elected to membership the program for the first dance is very attractive and all indica tions point to a most successful social affair communication edi'xoks brown and whjtk : the election of manager and assistant manager of next year's football team will soon be held as these offices are very important ones every man in college should take an active interest in the out come of the election and cast his vote for the most suitable men in order to take part in this elec tion it is necessary for those who have not of yale met 197 years ago messrs dean and w 11 . sage have deeded to cornell the mansion belonging to their father the late hon 11 w sage tor an infirmary for the cornell students they have also endowed itjwith 100,000 for its maintenance new instructor in c e department winter l wilson engineer of the guatemala government on the gautemala and mexico boundary survey has been appointed in structor in civil engineering in le high university to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of mr john p brooks who jecently ac cepted a professorship in the state college of kentucky mr wilson was gradnated from lehigh in 1888 with the degree of civil engineer and until 1891 was engaged on the pennsylvania railroad in both con struction and maintenance of way departments lie then studied law and was admitted to the maryland bar from 1892 to 1895 he was on the field and office work of the intercontinental railroad and since 1895 has been on the geodetic sur vey of the boundary line between mexico aud guatemala mr wilson has accepted the ap pointment and will enter upon his duties at the beginning of the second term in february taking charge of the instruction in topo graphic geodetic and railroad sur veying lehigh is to be con gratulated on the addition to the corps of instructors of one of her graduates who has had such an extended experience in important engineering membership and the names of six men were proposed on accouut of the illness of dr drown the joint meeting with the agora which was to be held on dec 18 is to be postponed starting the program mr kneas read an essay entitled " should the president's term of office be lengthened ?" the order of exer cises was changed the debate being announced in order to allow the speakers to leave early the question was " resolved that con gress should subsidize the mer chant marine meaker 99 and chickering 01 upheld the affirma tive starkey 98 and moritz 98 the negative the speeches were interesting and showed that consid erable time had been spent in their preparation the judges decided in favor of the affirmative as did also the house birch 99 de livered an extemporaneous speech on the subject " should college football be abolished on account of its brutality he appeared to think there was a little unnecessary roughness but no brutality frisby was delegated to represent the in tercollegiate oratorical union which met on saturday notices
