gun club the gun club held a successful shoot at their traps on the athletic field saturday afternoon the attendance was much better than at any previous time and shows that interest is being taken in the practice for the u of p match dornin and eckert were elected to membership the shooting was from three traps set for known angles at six teen yards rise van duyne and dornin made the best scores there will be another shoot be fore christmas vacation probably saturday next communication editors brown and white notwithstanding several excel lent points which an alumnus makes in the last issue of the brown and white it seems to an outsider that the communication is unsympathetic in tone and feel ing if lehigh's various organi zations had the moral and material support of everyone interested in the university — the teaching corps graduates and undergraduates — there is no question but that this support would go far toward solv ing the perplexing problem but unsympathetic criticism will not diminish the evil it is true that this season's football team has been a losing team but there are many good reasons why they have lost the game played on thanksgiving day was the pluck iest and most inspiring game 1 have seen in fifteen years to a team that displayed so much cour age and so many admirable points the team " losing " is not appropriate an alumnus not of lehigh 4 the concert of the pennsyl vania glee banjo and mandolin clubs will be given on saturday evening dec 18 dr drown improving dr estes authorizes the state ment that dr drowns condition has been steadily improving dur ing the last week dr semple's lecture dr semple delivered a very in teresting lecture on edgar allan poe to the freshman class on last saturday morning extracts from the lecture are given below : among the few men of the earlier times who deserve high rank is edgar allan poe opin ions are still divided as to poe's true place in literature in at least one kind of poetry he has been excelled by none of his successors ; and his prose truly reflects his own peculiar characteristics he is unique there is no american writer with whom he may be com pared he has not the delicate romantic sense the clear insight into character of hawthorne ; the intense patriotism of lowell ; the severe moral tone of bryant or the geniality of holmes if we look for work to which his prose may be even remotely related we shall find it in the poetry of cole ridge poe is made up of con trasts and this truth is strikingly illustrated by a comparison of his life with his writings born in 1809 he was left an orphan in 1811 and found a home with his godfather mr allan of richmond a wealthy man who in dulged his protege in youth and accustomed him to luxuries that made poverty in his later years all the harder to bear poe was taken to england by mr allan and spent six years in school returning to america in 1821 after attending a private school for a time he entered the university of virginia where he distinguished himself by accumu lating a gambling debt of 2000 — a debt that caused a breach be tween himself and his foster-father thrown upon his own resources he decided to publish some of his poems about this time 1827 poe caught the enthusiasm of the greek revolution and started for europe but for unexplained reasons never reached greece having become involved in some difficulties he re turned and soon offered a poem in competition for a prize offered by a baltimore paper and won easily from this time until his death in 1849 he was associated with vari ons magazines ; and we may leave his life which is little more than a story of dissipation and consider his works which can be divided into three classes criticisms prose tales and poems as a critic poe does not rank high his sym pathies are very narrow and his opinions of what is best in litera ture were determined by his own ac complishments in that field that poe possessed some of the marks of a critic however is sufficiently shown by his experience with charles dickens yet his reputa tion does not rest upon his work as a critic in his prose writings the narra continued on second page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday december 13 1897 vol y no 21 the philadelphia-lehigh club the regular monthly meeting of the philadelphia-lehigh club was held at the university club thurs day evening dec 9 manager far well and captain gunsolus of the football eleven were the guests of the club and spoke on the condition of athletics at lehigh dr harry toulmin 86 the president of the club made some farewell remarks lie goes to milwaukee next week to accept a lucrative position in a large insurance company a very pleasant evening was spent calendar tuesday dec 14 — regular meet ing of the mathematical club in packer hall at 7 p m thursday dec 16 — regular meet ing of the electrical engineer ing society in the physical laboratory at 7.80 p m saturday dec 18 — university lecture at 9.30 a m lecture on emerson by mr emery sunday dec 19 — regular meet ing of the christian associa tion at 6.15 p m in christ mas hall wednesday dec 22 — christmas holidays begin at 12.30 p m agora the agora held two meetings last week one on thursday and one on saturday evening for the purpose of preparing for the debate to be held at the joint meeting of the agora and forum next satur day at the first of these meet ings an extemporaneous debate on the subject to be considered was participated in by messrs leidy and horn on the affirmative and messrs hess and watts on the negative the question was de cided in favor of the affirmative messrs rodney canning dortch and coffin were elected to member ship and some private business was transacted at the second meeting of which unfortunately the members had not been properly notified the at tendance was unusually small ; nothing of any importance was accomplished beyond the consider ation of the plans for the joint debate notices sophomore physics both sections reciting to me in physics will have a quiz on chap iv tuesday dec 10 h s webb it has been found advisable by the athletic representatives to post pone the election for manager and assistant manager of the football team only about forty students have par 4 their athletic dues and such a small proportion of the college does not express the public opinion of the student body suffi ciently to select men for these im portant offices pay up your ath letic dues at once so this election can be held at an early date col 11 g prout editor of the eailroad gazette who is a recog nized authority on the maintenance and operation of railroads will de liver a lecture in the university course on saturday dec 18 at 9.30 a m the subject will be " eailroad accidents and how to prevent them dec 18th mr emery will lec ture on emerson peof thayer «». walter camp in the current issue of harper's weekly selects the following all-america football eleven as being the best available from the college teams : cochrane i c princeton chamberlain 1 t yale hare 1 g pennsylvania doucette c harvard brown r g yale outland r t pennsylvania hall r c yale desaulles quarter yale dibblee halfback harvar kelly halfback princeton minds fullback pennsylvania during 1896-7 cornell profes sors eighty-five in number pub lished six hundred books and pamphlets brown university has been be queathed 40,000 on condition that it be expended upon the erec tion of a memorial arch of iron and stone at the front of the entrance c e society thursday evening mr keim read a paper before the civil en gineering society on " the park bow office building having been employed in making shop drawings he is well acquainted with the subject and was able to give an accurate description of this great structure the build ing covers an area of 15,000 square feet which is greater than that of any structure in new york 9000 tons of steel were required in its construction the total weight be ing 56,000 tons the building when completed will have 27 stories and a height of 886 feet above the curb line and will con tain 900 to 1000 offices and can accommodate 4,500 people in designing a building of this class the engineers must consider whether it is possible for the wind to blow it over it was found in this case that the wind could not overthrow more than 9000 tons so the building is perfectly safe the foundation rests on a firm sand which extends down a depth of 100 feet the columns are sup ported by grillage which is placed on piles cut off at th water level it is not economical to build a structure higher than twenty stor ies for it is found that the cost increases over the twentieth story in a geometric ratio mr keim was able to give only a general descrip tion for lack of time but at some future meeting will finish the sub ject after the conclusion of the paper a meeting of the general engineering society was held al though the civil section was the only one represented it is unfor tunate that the other sections are not more interested in their own work leidy sanchez and farn ham were elected to membership it was voted to permit the sopho mores to become associate mem bers and a committee was appointed to report on arrangements
