the increase of traffic on the great lakes caused by the growth of the copper mining and wheat raising industries of the west it was found necessary to provide better means of navigation at one point the ste marie river is a series of rapids for several thousand feet and the first attempt towards improvement was to dredge a channel three hundred feet wide and twenty feet deep through this rift this was found to be insufficient and it was decided to try the locking system two locks were built by the state of michigan each with a lift of nine feet and a depth on the sills of eleven and a half feet these were used for thirty years when a lock with a depth of seventeen feet was constructed work on the sixteen-foot chan nel had been barely completed when the demands of commerce increased so enormously as to ne cessitate a twenty foot channel a new lock was therefore built on the site of the old state locks the walls are 1100 feet long and 45 feet high forming the largest lock in the world the dimensions of the lock proper are 800x100x21 feet and the estimated cost is nearly 5,000,000 red sandstone taken from the lock pit was used in making the concrete this was made to pass through a two and one-half inch ring, the small pieces being screened off and the remainder washed the sand was clean sharp and quartz oze pumped from the bottom of the river the composition of the concrete was one part cement one and a half sand and four of broken stone cut stone was used for the cop ing and facing of the lock walls and also for inter walls this stone was a close grained limestone taken from the detroit river shipped in the rough and cut to dimensions on the site about 26j per cent was lost in cutting the gates are built of iron in the form of an arch each leaf is fifty five feet long the largest ones weighing nearly two hundred tons each they are operated by hy draulic engines driven by turbines to show the carefulness with which the lock was constructed, the specifications stated that the face of the courses should not deviate more than one-tenth of an inch from the base line the exercises in commemoration of washington's birthday will be held in packer
