notices senior class meeting last thusday a special meeting of the class was called to discuss the coming senior banquet as announced some time ago the date was fixed for march 11 but as only twenty men would attend it was thought better to postpone the banquet or give it up alto gether the sentiment of the class seemed in favor of a cheap com monplace affair and as the com mittee elected by the class would not take the responsibility of getting up such a banquet they tendered their resignations the meeting adjourned leaving all banquet supporters very much disgusted «. dartmouth having no chess club the annual brown-dartmouth match will not take place this year lowa baptists have decided to concentrate educational efforts upon a single institution of college grade and have decided to unite in the support of des moines college e e society the regular meeting of the electrical engineering society was held in the physical laboratory last thursday evening it was the best attended meeting thus far during the season of 97 and 98 the paper for the evening was presented by gratz 98 on " static transformers after an exhaustive discussion of the elementary and general princi ples of the transformation from a high to a low voltage or vice versa in alternating circuits mr gratz deduced and demonstrated the mathematical formulas used in the calculation of sizes in the designing of the various types of transform ers and the designation ot the losses inherent thereto or such as are liable to exist owing to careless design or workmanship mr gratz's paper naturally in volved quite an extensive investi gation into the nature of an alter nating current and it was conse quently of so intricate a composition that it was most difficult to read in a manner to make it interesting to an audience however sympath etic he succeeded admirably, howe ver in retaining the attention of his audience throughout the entire discussion and on closing was ten dered a vote of thanks by the society the resignation of mr hess as secretary was received and accepted mr daggett was elected his successor the president was instructed to make an effort to secure professor macfarlane during his stay at the university to give a lecture before the society the names of j w and e g grace were proposed for active member ship and that of freedman 1900 for associate membership , the faculty of bryn mawr will henceforth wear academic gowns on ceremonial occasions college meeting president drown received a very enthusiastic reception when he addressed the student body last saturday morning this is the first occasion on which he has met the students together since he was taken ill it was unfortunate that there were several re examinations being held at the same time thus preventing the attendance of a number of men from the different classes 11l as he was president drown has kept himself informed as to the general condition of college work and expressed himself as being entirely satisfied with it in comparison with that done at other technical institutions he said it is in advance of them in consistency of effect students at lehigh are worked hard but not over-worked as is shown by the interest taken in the literary societies and athletics when the men are overworked in any department it is due rather to the zeal of the in structor than to anything else and all well grounded complaints will receive careful examination and just treatment the honor system as adopted while some of its rules are possibly not entirely satisfactory to either the students themselves or to the faculty is at present the best to be had and a step in the right direc tion the ideal honor system is the one which has no rules or regulations governing it but this can only be operated in a place where a man that cheats is looked upon as an unclean thing not fit ta be the associate of gentlemen as yet our colleges are not in con dition to adopt such a system and for some time at least the present one must hold compulsory chapel was abolished at lehigh because the faculty had been able to devise no suitable punishment for non-attendance the fact of its being compulsory implied some form of penalty and as the only punishment at the command of the faculty viz : sus pension did not seem the proper thing chapel attendance was made voluntary the position in which lehigh would be placed by return ing to compulsory chapel to com ply with the wishes of the students would be unique yet would reflect credit upon the college and under graduates if the majority of the students desired it and would formulate some working plan the faculty would meet them half way in returning to the old custom the aim of a student at college is primarily the fitting of himself for his life
