long string of victories the line-up for lehigh will be prac tically the same as that which de feated swarthmore last saturday with captain hess and smith for wards schaub and weinstein guards and gallegher center earlier in the season bucknell defeated toronto in a close game it can be recalled that lehigh easily conquered the canadians by a considerable margin so this would seem to give lehigh an edge over the orange and blue popular student dies suddenly dies of pneumonia at new york home after exams demise unexpected the lehigh freshman swimming team was immersed by the mercers bung tank team in a very close con test last saturday afternoon at the mercersburg pool the final score was 39-23 the contest was closely contested throughout mercersburg having a slight edge over lehigh in several of the events the winning of the relay race by mercersburg was the deciding factor of the meet lehigh did well in coping with their rivals so suoessfully as they are probably the best scholas tic team in the state captain wynn of lehigh who was a star swimmer at mercersburg last year performed 1 best for the brown and white he captured the hundred yard back stroke in fine style andi placed third in the hundred yard dash hobbs le high's star diver did 1 well in get ting second place in that event as he was up against michael the supply bureau moves quarters this year's sophomore cotillion club dance which is to take place in drown hall friday february 27 promises to outshine any affair offered by this club in recent years the committee in charge has obtained one of the most popu lar syncopation producers in the country to furnish the music namely ted weens and his bruns wick recording orchestra this choice of music is in itself indica tive of the effort which the com mittee is putting forth to make this dance the outstanding social event of the year and make it in some measure fill the gap caused by this year's ban on house parties dancing will continue until two o'clock subscription has been set at six dollars in addition the wrestling meet with yale which is to be held in taylor gym the following after noon offers another addition to the activities of the week end changes from drown hall to alumni building dur ing holidays dates set for bach choir the dean's office has placed the number of students dismissed from college at the close of the first semester because of poor scholastic standing at sixty-six men during the last term there were fifty-six men on eighty per cent probation of that number four withdrew from college and sixteen were drop ped at the end of the term forty one sophormores and upper class men failed to pass fifty per cent of their work and accordingly are out of college nine freshmen were also dismissed making a total of sixty-six men to go out of college for scholastic reasons by the action of the committee on discipline two men are exclud ed for a year from the university for cheating in the calculus final exam three other men were rep rimanded and one was required to repeat the exam for improper con duct not involving dishonesty three seniors were denied credit in one course for the improper use of sources in the term report there have been ten men to appear before the committee thus far and the case of two other men is yet to be heard regarding registration 926 men completed registration during the two registration days and about 30 men registered later it is expect ed that the total number to register for the second term will be 1050 of this number thirty men are new students sale of tickets to 200 guar antors will begin mar 16 additions to be made professor thomas speaks to four square club the lehigh basket shooters start ed the second half of the season off with a rush by defeating swarth more 34-16 saturday night this is the brown and white cagemen's seventh straight victory eight wins in nine starts the game was much closer than the score would indicate in fact lehigh was trail ing up to the closing minutes of the first half when hess tied the score 10-10 with a long shot swarthmore opened up the game with a whirlwind attack which looked at first as though they would emerge from the fray the winner though they did establish a lead which in the early minutes of the game looked insurmount able they only made the lehigh de fense tighten up and the offense cleaner just before the final whistle of the first half lehigh tied the score after the rest the spec tators did not recognize the wear ers of the brown and white as be ing the same team which had been on the floor during the previous half during the second half swarthmore was only able to get a lone field basket the garnet and white team could not penetrate the strong lehigh defense and at no time were they hi a position to challenge lehigh s lead in this half lehigh tallied twenty-four points to the loser's six jim baldwin used the same line-up as has been seen through out the season and the clever and neat passing and defensive work during the second half proved that his selections were correct chuck hess was the leading scorer his accuracy accounting for fourteen points all scored from the floor and not a few from difficult angles chuck's forward mate con on page 4 col 3 will be may 29 and 30 alumni council to hold meeting february 21 the lehigh swimming team won its second meet last saturday when they defeated the team represent ing george washington university the score of the meet was 48 to 23 with lehigh credited with the larg er sum the meet was held in the pool at the taylor gymnasium the victory is somewhat notable in that it is the second one which we have acquired so far in the sea son by a rather large and over whelming score the first one was that with new york university which was held in new york that one was won by the score of 43 to 19 which is not far from the score of the last meet in fact in view of the results of these two meets and the promise shown by some distinguished members of the freshman team it seems highly probable that next year the team will be able to repeat its victories of this year the details of the events show that in every event with the ex ception of one george washington was defeated for first place they won the plunge which was their only first tally the results of this event might have been different had not the team lost delong who is out of college since mid-years they did garner a goodly number of seconds and thirds but one le high man in each event outclassed his opponents and crashed through for a spite of this fact they made a splendid showing a new diving board is in the process of erection at last much dissatisfaction was caused by the condition of the old board and this must have been a detriment to the possibility of per will discuss plans pertinent to university and finan cial matters the alumni association of le high will act as host at the twelfth annual meeting of the association of alumni secretaries which will be held april 23 to 26 inclusive the annual meeting of the alumni magazines associated will also be held at this time in conjunction with the other meeting it is ex pected that between two and three hundred delegates from all sections of the country will attend these meetings these two organizations are com posed of the men andi women who are engaged in alumni work at all the foremost colleges of the coun try for the american colleges have come to rely to such an extent upon the support of their graduates that the work of organizing the alumni and enlisting their whole-hearted support has developed into a highly specialized profession the convention was brought to bethlehem this year through the efforts of walter r okeson secre tary of the alumni association of lehigh university who has been an active member of both associa tions since their inception with the completion of the alumni me morial building a suitable meeting place was made available on the le high campus and mr okeson in vited the convention to bethlehem drake university at dcs moines lowa also extended an invitation but a majority of the members chose lehigih and bethlehem as the scene of the 1925 convention last year the meeting was held at the university of virginia in char lottesville the business sessions will be held on thursday friday and saturday morning each evening and on saturday afternoon and sunday social features have been planned to entertain the visitors con on page 4 col 2 final details of the program have not yet been announced but j l morrill editor scabbard and blade initiate pledgees c h porter 25 gets degree in three and a half years banquet and initiation held at hotel bethlehem prior to exams the entire college mourns the unexpected death of joseph j mo clair 27 which occurred at his home in new york city on monday morning february 2 the young man left college on the preceding wednesday com plaining of a slight cold on his arrival home his condition took a turn for the worse and medical at tention was summoned when his ailment was diagnosed as pneu monia little hope was held out for the unfortunate young man from friday to the time of his de mise although prior to the day of his departure for home mr mo clair seemed to be in excellent physical condition the news of his death coming as a distinct shock to his host of friends and fraternity brothers at lehigh a pathetic little incident in con nection with his death was a letter received by fraternity brothers on tuesday morning in the letter he mentioned that he wasn't feeling well but as soon as he recovered sufficiently he would be back at work on the books he hoped that the boys had all been successful in their exams and wished them the best luck a note in the cheerful tenor of himself this short mis sive was dictated to his sister at one a.m monday morning and bore a postscript by her stating that he died at six a.m but had been in sistent that she send the message con on page 4 col 4 joseph j moclair was born in new york on december 18 1903 he prepared at dwight school where he took an active interest in student affairs he was on the baseball squad for two years and won his varsity letter in football the last two years in addition to this the deceased was president of the senior class coming to le high with the class of 1927 he rapidly made friends and his en gaging personality developed joe as he was familiarly known into prof stanley thomas of lehigh university was the speaker at the weekly gathering of the four square club at allentown he praised allentown s system of dis posing of sewage by declaring that it has stood all the tests of a new system and if it works out on a larger scale it will mean that it will have met a new idea in sanitary engineering prof thomas is a bacteriologist and spoke of the in finitesimal germ as it applies to disease agriculture industry and every dtoy life he said the local sewage disposal system was one of the few in the country that did not depend upon germ life for its ac tivity the process is the electro litio process by direct oxidation and he saidi that germs are not re sponsible for the clearance of the sewage of its dangerous substances but that it is done by means of elec tric plates which change the nature of the refuse operating at its present capacity he says it is a big success he has made tests of the refuse before and after ite treat ment andi it has showed wonderful results he said during the last week every stu dent at some time or other visited the new home of the supply bureau the improvement of the present room over that of the old cramped quarters in drown mem orial hall was marked by every student who knew the handicaps under which the management work ed while in drown hall the trans fer was made during the christ mas holidays and on january 12 the new place was opened for busi ness the new store room is a decided ly better one it is more than twice as large as was the room in drown hall and is a much more attractive one the stock can be displayed and cared for to much better advantage since the space for accommodating it has been in creased plans are now being laid to increase the amount and variety of the stock but as yet they have not been carried out mr baderschneider 20 is the manager of the supply bureau he is assisted by seven part-time student clerks the profits from the bureau are used in the upkeep of drown memorial hall lehigh s social center mr baderschneider hinted when recently interviewed that at some time in the near future a soda fountain and other additions may be made to the supply bureau hp said these changes are already under consideration and that what decision will be reached will be de pendent upon the amount of pat ronage given by the students hazel as a coach homer hazel football star on rutgers college football team has been signed to coach mississippi university eleven for 1925 of interest among the students who have joined the ranks of alumni this month is the gradua tion of clarence h porter of washington d c porter entered in the fall of 1921 and in receiving his degree of mechanical engineer will have been one of the few to have attained the distinction of having gone through lehigh in three andi one-half years as an undergraduate clare porter was connected with many of the activities aroundi the cam pus he was captain of the cross country team this past fall a member of the scabbard and 1 blade andi robert w blake society the brown and white claimed him as an associate editor and the me chanical engineering society as their president porter is also a member of tau beta pi notice there will be a meeting of the sophomore cotillion on thurs day february 12 at 7 10 p.m drown hall election of new members . prior to final examinations the scabbard and blade held their annual initiation and banquet the latter being held at the hotel bethlehem the banquet annual festival will be held in the packer memorial chapel of lehigh university on friday and satur day may 29 and 30 it will again be under the direction of dr fred wolle the founder and leader last year it was necessary to call off the event because of the serious illness of the director bach's christmas oratorio which was also to be sung last year will be given the first day this year and the mass in b minor as customary on saturday the friday sessions as usual will be at 4 and 8 p.m but a change will be made in the first saturady concert which will be at 1 p.m instead of 1 30 the second saturday session will be at 4 p.m the sale of tickets to guarantors which number 200 this year will open march 16 the time for open ing the sale of course tickets to the general public will be announced later but it will be some time in april the guarantors this year number 40 per cent more than two years ago and inquiries for tickets are being received by chairman h j schneller from all parts of the country and canada there are many more of these also than in 1923-24 the chapel arrangements will be in charge of dr n m emery and t edgar shields the annual meeting of the alumni council will be held on february 21 this council is com posed of representatives of every class and every lehigh club that is the alumni clubs throughout the country it is likely that there will be more than one hundred dele gates at this meeting the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the important questions of the univer sity and to compose the various topics which are to be presented to the alumni at their annual meet ing in june one of the principal topics to be discussed is the lehigh plain this is a plan to raise an annual sum which will furnish the uni versity with an amount of money equal to the interest on the four million dollars endowment until the latter amount is completely raised by this plan each alumnus is requested to give a certain amount annually to the university included in this would be his regu lar alumni association dues and price of subscription to the alumni bulletin plans for furnishing the new building will also be discussed bethlehem pa tuesday february 10 1925 university eleven for 1925 of interest among the students who have joined the ranks of alumni this month is the gradua tion of clarence h porter of washington d c porter entered in the fall of 1921 and in receiving his degree of mechanical engineer will have been one of the few to have attained the distinction of having gone through lehigh in three andi one-half years as an undergraduate clare porter was connected with many of the activities aroundi the cam pus he was captain of the cross country team this past fall a member of the scabbard and 1 blade andi robert w blake society the brown and white claimed him as an associate editor and the me chanical engineering society as their president porter is also a member of tau beta pi notice there will be a meeting of the sophomore cotillion on thurs day february 12 at 7 10 p.m drown hall election of new members . prior to final examinations the scabbard and blade held their annual initiation and banquet the latter being held at the hotel choir it was announced that the annual festival will be held in the packer memorial chapel of lehigh university on friday and satur day may 29 and 30 it will again be under the direction of dr fred wolle the founder and leader last year it was necessary to call off the event because of the serious illness of the director bach's christmas oratorio which was also to be sung last year will be given the first day this year and the mass in b minor as customary on saturday the friday sessions as usual will be at 4 and 8 p.m but a change will be made in the first saturady concert which will be at 1 p.m instead of 1 30 the second saturday session will be at 4 p.m the sale of tickets to guarantors which number 200 this year will open march 16 the time for open ing the sale of course tickets to the general public will be announced later but it will be some time in april the guarantors this year number 40 per cent more than two years ago and inquiries for tickets are being received by chairman h j schneller from all parts of the country and canada there are many more of these also than in 1923-24 the chapel arrangements will be in charge of dr n m emery and t edgar shields the annual meeting of the alumni council will be held on february 21 this council is com posed of representatives of every class and every lehigh club that is the alumni clubs throughout the country it is likely that there will be more than one hundred dele gates at this meeting the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the important questions of the univer sity and to compose the various topics which are to be presented to the alumni at their annual meet ing in june one of the principal topics to be discussed is the lehigh plain this is a plan to raise an annual sum which will furnish the uni versity with an amount of money equal to the interest on the four million dollars endowment until the latter amount is completely raised by this plan each alumnus is requested to give a certain amount annually to the university included in this would be his regu lar alumni association dues and price of subscription to the alumni bulletin plans for furnishing the new building will also be discussed bethlehem pa
